Anime for people who don’t like anime

A recent post on Japan Powered talks about certain anime titles that even people who hate anime could watch and enjoy. The idea it’s bringing out is that, despite how much we love it, we know that all anime – from shonen to slice-of-life – is full of tropes and character archetypes we see over and over again. Many of these cliches we love, some we don’t, but generally what makes us stay fans is that we don’t mind such things in our anime or even have specific tropes we can’t get enough of. But for some people, anime-specific tropes such as bishy guys, moe girls, giant robots, wild fantasy battles, and cuteness for cuteness’ sake, just aren’t their thing. So today I wanted to think about what anime are virtually free of these cliches and seem to cater to universal tastes rather than otaku tastes…

Anime’s three “building” categories

An interesting thought occurred to me recently in terms of how anime series are structured. It seems that most anime series focus on “building” one out of three narrative aspects – either building the story, building the characters, or building the world. Some focus on two out of three, a few manage to focus equally on all three – but it’s intriguing to think about which of the three each series is most concerned with…

Can anime affect our personality?

An interesting post via MkMiku questions whether anime, and our attachment to certain characters, can in fact influence our personality in real life…

Anime powers I would like to have

I’m sure this is something we’ve all given thought to at some point during our fandom. I was inspired by a post from Glo about anime powers I would like to have, and have since come up with a list…

Do you watch anime for the story or the characters (or both)?

The idea that, in order for people to like an anime, it has to have a good story AND good characters, sounds plausible. However, that’s not the case for many fans – often times, they’ll like one of the two aspects in a series and not so much the other. For me, there are many anime I like for both the story and the characters, but there are also just as many I like for only one of the two…

New anime sections!

Well, I’m back with two new anime sections on the main AnimeYume.com site. I’ve literally spent all of the past couple of days working on them but I think they came out pretty good ^^ So check out the new Death Note and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya sections! (BTW, about the Haruhi section, I made an html version of the timeline I posted a while ago, and also updated it with some images). I’m really not sure if I’ll have time for more anime sections anytime soon but maybe.

Anyway, these past few posts here on the blog haven’t been very “blog-ish” (just stuff about the main site and my own personal life) so I really want to get back on track with good blog posts, and also catch up with my Inuyasha chapter reviews and other stuff. But I also need to catch up on my Japanese studies and my backlog of anime to watch…::sigh:: even on vacation there’s not enough time to do all the stuff you gotta do =P But regardless I’ll definitely be back here on the blog soon!

Death Note eps 1 & 2 Review

I was originally planning to write a review of just the first episode of Death Note. But it took a while before I finally had the time to watch it, and by then the second episode was already out, so I figured why not write a review on both instead =P Anyway, just so you know, this review is written by someone who has never read the Death Note manga. I’m not as big a fan of the style of manga as I am of anime, so I decided to wait until the series was made into an anime. Before I watched the episodes, I only had a vague idea of what the series is about and that’s it, so my mood is that of a very satisfied new fan ^^ The series sounded interesting and I heard good things about the anime, so I decided to give it a try…
