Anime powers I would like to have

I’m sure this is something we’ve all given thought to at some point during our fandom. I was inspired by a post from Glo about anime powers I would like to have, and have since come up with a list…

Before I get to the list of anime powers I’d want to have, I laid out a couple of rules for it:

1) I would want these powers only within the context of how I am, right now, in the real world, not if I were to exist in the anime’s world. For example, Touma from To Aru Majutsu no Index has a useful power called Imagine Breaker, but I wouldn’t want that power in the real world because it’s not like I encounter dangerous magic and psychic power to use it against =P Likewise, I wouldn’t need many of the major kick-ass shonen powers because I don’t get into large-scale battles on a daily basis.

2) The powers must be something specific from a specific character, not a generalization like “psychic powers” or “wielding a big sword.”

So, without further adieu, here are the powers I’d want, in no particular order…

Sorcery – Lina (Slayers)

There are all kinds of sorcery in the world of Slayers, but of course our main character Lina has some of the best. She can use all kinds of spells, from combat spells like the Dragon Slave, which can destroy an entire city, to the more common Fireballs that can blast bad guys outta the way. Then there are everyday useful spells, like Levitation for flying and Lighting to illuminate the dark. She’s just got an endless amount of useful sorcery at her disposal.

Super strength – Shizuo (Durarara!!)

Shizuo’s herculean physical strength would be extremely useful. However, if used as conspicuously and aggressively as he uses it, it could also cause people to think you’re a freak and you could get into lots of trouble. If I had such power, I would use it as inconspicuously as possible and only if I feel it’s necessary. Hmm, would it be a waste for a level-headed person to have such strength?

Genius hacking – Ed (Cowboy Bebop)

As computers are controlling our world more and more each day, being able to freely hack into them and use them in ways even their creators can’t would definitely be a good power to have. I wouldn’t use such a skill maliciously, but probably for personal enjoyment to customize my computer as much as possible, easily fix anything that goes wrong with it, and access any information I need. And if there’s any person/organization/company I think is bad news, I’ll screw up their web site good XD

Shindanjuu – Lag (Tegami Bachi)

Lag’s ability to shoot “heart bullets” from his Shindanjuu gun and get a peek inside people’s hearts has fascinated me since I started watching Tegami Bachi. If only a power like that existed – a power to see exactly what people have gone through and how they’ve been affected by their past, would definitely make us more understanding and thoughtful towards each other.

Synesthesia – Canaan (Canaan)

Canaan’s synesthesia ability, which blends all her senses into one another and lets her see people’s emotions through colors, is very interesting. Although it wasn’t explained thoroughly, it seems like it makes her much more in tune with and sensitive to the world around her, allowing her to easily avoid dangerous situations and predict things that most people can’t.

The Death Note – Light (Death Note)

Having this controversial item at my disposal would both gratify and frighten me. Talking about how I personally would use the Death Note is a story for another time, but to summarize, unlike Light who used it to get rid of anyone labeled as a criminal without even knowing their circumstances (as well as many innocent people who were a threat to his plan), I would only use it if I knew for sure that the person had nothing but bad to give to the world. Most of the time I would probably not want to use it, but if someone truly cruel or despicable came along, they’d better watch out!

Souten Kisshun – Orihime (Bleach)

Orihime’s healing ability, which can not only heal any injury, but also restore anyone/thing to perfect condition. It basically rejects all negativity and damage from whatever is inside the barrier she creates. Being able to heal the physical pain of those who are suffering is a power most people would like to have. I think this power can also revive the dead, but that’s a little iffy for me…

Hana Hana Fruit – Robin (One Piece)

A lot of the One Piece characters have awesome abilities, but most of them would only be useful for combat. Robin’s power that she gains from eating the Hana Hana Fruit however, could be extremely useful for a variety of situations. She’s able to to produce multiple copies of parts of her body on any surface she can see. She usually makes copies of her hands which can be used for all kinds of things, such as holding down people many times her size, making a “chain” of hands to reach things far away, or carrying objects too big for only two hands. If I had her power, I would never “need a hand” with anything again XD

Teleporting – Kuroko (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun)

Teleporting is a pretty well known power that I’m sure many of us would like to have. How cool would it be to just pop up anywhere and not have to worry about doors or walls in your way? And easily transport objects and people with you? Unfortunately her power has limitations on how far she can teleport and the size of the object she takes with her. I know there are other anime characters with teleporting powers that don’t have such limitations, just can’t think of any right now.

Geass – Lelouch (Code Geass)

And lastly, another awesome wish-fulfilling power, Lelouch’s Geass. It lets him control anyone just by meeting eyes with them. He can command them to do something simple such as performing a short task for him, to something major, like performing a continuous task for months on end. Geass can even make people forget things or make them try to do things to the best of their ability even if they can’t. Its main disadvantage however is that it can only be used once per person (though more than one command can be given on initial contact).

———-

And if anyone’s curious as to why Haruhi’s power isn’t on my list, it’s because her power is so complex and all-encompassing, I honestly would be uncomfortable having it. I wouldn’t want to have it and be unaware of it like she is, but I wouldn’t want to have it unless I had it perfectly under my control. If I couldn’t control it, it would be a very scary power to have, especially without my own SOS Brigade 0_o

There are probably other anime powers that I can’t think of now and will remember later, but I’m just gonna go with these ten. Feel free to share your own in the comments =)

YESSSSS Robin was actually going to be in my next installment of this thing that was supposed to be a series of posts but ended up kind of being forgotten about. I already have the post written I’m just too lazy to put it out.

Robin is awesome. Her power has literally limitless possibilities. I don’t what power I’d want most in anime…I always liked Inuyasha’s powers because they make him strong as hell without making him completely unbeatable, not to mention the specifics like sharp claws and ability to jump really far and high. That’s just too cool for school.

    • Yumeka says:

I agree, Robin’s ability of being able to produce multiple copies of her limbs would definitely have limitless possibilities =)

I would want Inuyasha’s strength and endurance against injuries, which is at least double of what a normal human could withstand. His speed and jumping ability would be great too. Wouldn’t really need his sword since I don’t battle demons on a daily basis, but his claw attacks would be good for getting rid of minor enemies XD

  2. Joe says:

    I want Paper Master powers.

    Or Garzey’s Wing.

  3. Myna says:

But because Canaan is an anime, they exaggerated the concept of synesthesia and mixed it with the idea of aura. (I know this because my friend actually has synesthesia.)

I definitely want a Geass, and Lina’s kick ass sorcery. I think I’d like to be an alchemist, and have a magical device from Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. And to travel to different worlds like Mokona from Tsubasa!

    • Yumeka says:

Thanks to you I just realized that I was spelling synesthesia wrong in the post. Just fixed it.

But wow, I didn’t know it was a real condition 0_o How is it different it real life compared to how it’s represented in Canaan?

Alchemy and traveling to different worlds would be cool too!

      • Myna says:

Synesthesia in reality doesn’t come with any psychic, emotion reading powers. In real life, letters and numbers all have a specific color (it’s different for each person). So when people talk, she sees those colors subconsciously in her head. Like I know for her (because she’s told me so much), A’s are always red, and S’s are pink. She always tells me that the first letter’s color always has dominance/smeared through the other colors. So Canaan clearly exaggerated it and took it many levels higher. But it’s an anime, and they did so to make it more interesting, powerful, and more useful.

If you really want more insight on synesthesia, you should read the book “A Mango Shaped Space” by Wendy Mass. It’s a quick read and it’s very good. I highly recommend this book. And here’s the Wikipedia article about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia

  4. Odin Force says:

Geass is my best and only choice. Also, the only command I would make to others is: “When I say ‘Anime is cool !’, say ‘Yeah’ and obey me!”.

That’s more than enough for me to rule the world. Only problem for me though, is that I’d need to learn at least Chinese and Russian, because people in this world speak more than 1 language :P

    • Yumeka says:

LOL, if I had the Geass power, I would want to use it to make the world better, such as commanding people to stop doing bad things or to do more good things. But I’m sure I would want to slip in a few selfish commands too, like your example XD

That’s a good point about using the Geass with people who speak different languages. I wonder if it has the ability to bypass that or not. I don’t think it was mentioned in the anime.

  5. Valence says:

I wish I had the ability to teleport. This way I could plant foreign objects inside people I don’t like.

    Geass and DN works too.

Anyone thinking of Evangelion yet? lilith

    • Yumeka says:

Heh, I wonder if you could actually teleport inside of people. That sounds kinda gross actually XD Rather than plant things inside people I don’t like, I’d just teleport above/behind them and hit them with something when they least expect it.

If by Evangelion you mean being an Eva pilot, I would pass on that. Way too dangerous and angst-inducing!

  6. Liza says:

The abilities I would really like to have would be:

A paper master(R.O.D.)-I love books and the ability to use paper as a weapon because you love books. Although the fact that a book is pretty much destroyed if you use the power is kind of off-putting.

Soul Reaper(Bleach)-The soul reapers from Bleach always seemed cool to me. Their swords were all interesting and unique and I even went through a phase in which I created my own Zanpakuto.

Summoning(Tales of Symphonia)-Like Sheena in Tales of Symphonia, the ability to summon creatures to do your bidding was always cool to me. It meant that you could pretty much take care of any situation plus having a cute little creature like Corrine is adorable.

Persona summoning(Persona 3)-This is kind of like summoning but not. Instead of forming pacts with random creatures, persona summoning is summoning a creature within yourself. So, it’s pretty much a part of you that’s being released. Of course having the ability to summon personas would probably be a bit scary since it means a whole extra hour in the day of fighting shadows but I still think it would be cool. Although the whole shoot-yourself-in-the-head-to-summon thing might be a bit scary. XD

    • Yumeka says:

Good choices! If I could have a Soul Reaper’s zanpakuto, I think I would pick Hitsugaya’s. I could fly with icy wings and keep cool in this CA heat XD (it’s currently 79 degrees on this January day).

  7. KyonzumiNagato13 says:

How about Data Manipulation by Nagato Yuki? That will be so awesome and she’s aware of it. Well… You’re monitored by a giant entity that is not shown yet, so I guess that’s a no. Even though there are so many that I want to say, that’s the top.

    • Yumeka says:

I was almost gonna pick Yuki’s power, but then I remembered that I’d basically be a slave to some Data Overmind and be unable to do anything but what I’m commanded to do. That wouldn’t be fun XP Her power without being held down by the Data Overmind however, would be awesome.

      • Kyonzuminagato13 says:

You can just try to copy Ms. Suzumiya’s powers. Then create a world where there’s no IDSE, but you keep your powers ( like what Kyon says).

… Why am I getting into this too much…? XD

  8. f0calizer says:

(I have a cold and my voice is gone but I can still comment!…)

The power I want isn’t supernatural or magical, per se; it’s more like a different kind of interface. I want to be like Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell and be able to connect directly to the ‘Net and genius hack — often into other people’s cyberbrains — without a physical interface. She can both see the “real” world and the “virtual” one at the same time. Ed from Cowboy Bebop is genius hacker, but she still needs to use her hands and type.

    • Yumeka says:

The kind of technology seen in Ghost in the Shell is very fascinating. What scares me though is that, if I can hack into people’s brains, they could hack into mine. It’s one thing to invade my computer, it’s another to invade my actual person and mind! 0_o

  9. hoshiko says:

This is an interesting thought. From the list you’ve made, I thought I might like
Super strength and Genius hacking. Haha. I would like to have a Death Note book myself but the power it has is a little too overwhelming for me to keep. >.<

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, I would want the Death Note but at the same time having it would probably freak me out. Unlike Light, I would probably be too scared to use it for anything but extreme cases where I encounter a person who truly disgusts me.

  10. I’ve never really thought much on the topic. A friend and I did joke once about having a Death Note, but we didn’t so much talk about having the Death Note itself as we talked about having a shinigami. Geass may be interesting to have now that you mention it though.

  11. H says:

interesting and i agree all those powers seem really cool and i really liked the “heart bullets” and Caanan’s power =)
    bye.
    –End–

  12. akani says:

    Powers I’d like to have:

Redirection – Accelerator’s vector control, since really you can do anything you want to – flying (controlling wind and gravity), going invisible (reflecting light off), super strength (weight is nothing when you can just control the vectors), just insane destruction overall (there’s a certain epic scene in the novels that I won’t mention here because it’ll spoil the second season). However, the downsides to that are that you’d have to have a brain on the same level as his (as a comparison, the calculating power of 10000 SISTERs only made up half of his original brain power) and that you’d have to suffer the pain and loneliness of having such a powerful ability.

Teleportation – Yes, I think it’d be quite a fun power to have. However, like Redirection, you need to be extremely precise with your calculations and take into account your exact surroundings. If you don’t, you can end up severely injuring yourself or other people (yes, you can teleport through people, what makes you think that they’d be an exception?). An example of how horrifying the consequences are is Awaki, who suffers trauma from an accident and has her ability development halted because she can’t stand teleporting herself.

Dennou Coil’s glasses – Well, they’re not technically an ability, but a world like that would be incredibly exciting even though the series has shown the dark side of that quite well. I’d like to learn how to become an encoder just like Isako just because of how pretty her drawings look. Having battles like the one in episode 4 would be really fun as well.

Luna Dial – This isn’t from an anime, it’s from Touhou. Sakuya’s time manipulation really would come handy. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij5EK-YaRRE

Intelligent device from Nanoha – I always thought that the weapon system in Nanoha was incredibly cool. I especially admire Fate’s Bardiche, a kickass scythe that can change into an even more kickass sword. I want to learn how to use magic that cool and come up with my own spells, even if it takes a lot of work. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH-KHaAAa74

The ability to change my sock into a badass katana (from PSG) – Just because Stocking is badass.

Tenshi’s skill set – They look amazing. Guard Skill: Delay is one of my favorites, and I really liked that unnamed wing-shaped bomb attack near the end.

The ability to play Mahjong and pull off incredibly insane and epic moves like the people in Saki – Well, it wouldn’t really be useful in daily life, but still! This is only one small moment in a series of many: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6yMnmHEvBA

  13. Kal says:

Lina’s Sorcery would definitely be fun, but I can see how destructive that can be. The Death Note is one really scary item to have. If I ever were to find something like a death note, I would try my hardest to burn it, or destroy it. I love the deathnote anime, because it shows perfectly how power can corrupt anyone. Yagami is a perfectly reasonable and smart individual, but is simply corrupted by the absolute power to take life.

So if I had to choose some power, I would choose something simple, that cannot hurt anyone. Something like Kazari Uiharus power to keep things warm :) Having powers to destroy, or heal, revive, or bend wills is far too much, and would corrupt you or make you the target if corrupt people.

  14. Terumi Yuuki says:

    My ouroboros.
