Has hype ever ruined an anime for you?

Every time a new season of anime comes around, or even when discussions happen to bring up past titles that were very popular, you hear people say things like “It was overhyped,” “Don’t give into the hype,” and “The hype ruined it for me.” But what exactly is meant by that and can the hype of a show really affect your personal viewing experience?…

Mixing drama and comedy in anime

A common element of anime – or any TV show or movie for that matter – is the mixing of comedy in an otherwise dramatic story. Usually the overall story and themes are serious, but the show also has its share of comic relief and slapsticks to break up the tension. For me, the mixing of drama and comedy can either greatly hinder my enjoyment of a show if done poorly, or can greatly raise my enjoyment if done well…

Knowing an anime’s story beforehand

A recent post by Marth brings up the idea of how our perception of an anime adaptation can be greatly influenced by our prior knowledge of the anime’s original source material. This can apply to all forms of media really, such as book-to-movie adaptations or movie retellings of TV series. In anime fandom, there’s strong opinions among those who intensely care about faithfulness to the source material and those who don’t know or care…

Anime and its misleading tones

Yet another unique anime attribute is how many series can convey a variety of different tones regardless of their genre or target audience. My 5 favorite anime of 2010

Before I get to the main content of this post, I just want to apologize for the recent lack of blogging. I’ve been very ill this past week and haven’t been able to do much of anything except lie in bed in a fevered stupor. Currently I’m on the road to recovery but I’m still pretty weak. However, I wanted to keep up my New Year’s tradition of picking my five favorite anime from the passing year…

Anime characters and their pokemon equivalents

“biribiri”

I came up with this idea a while back and have been wanting to try it out. It’s a pretty random project I know, but I thought it would be fun. Turns out, I had a blast making it, so I hope you’ll derive at least some amusement from it too…

Belated Durarara!!, Working!!, and FMA post

I was planning to post sooner about these three shows that I recently completed, but attending and writing about Anime Expo got in the way. So now that that excitement’s over, I feel obligated to write a few words about each of these series…

Do you watch anime for the story or the characters (or both)?

The idea that, in order for people to like an anime, it has to have a good story AND good characters, sounds plausible. However, that’s not the case for many fans – often times, they’ll like one of the two aspects in a series and not so much the other. For me, there are many anime I like for both the story and the characters, but there are also just as many I like for only one of the two…
