Structuring an anime review

Although my blog is mostly focused on editorial posts about anime and related topics, the other kind of post I enjoy writing is full series reviews of anime I complete each season. If you’ve read other anime reviews, you know that reviewers tend to have their own styles for reviewing anime, whether it’s more on the structured side or the “anything goes” side…

Update and summer plans

Credit to linked pixiv user

Hey all, sorry for the lack of a new post these past couple of weeks. I’ve been super busy since my last post and can’t find the time and energy to do a quality post today unfortunately (my last day with free time until next week). But as usual, I didn’t want to go this long without blogging at all, so I thought I’d take a few minutes to share the cool events I’m planning to blog about this summer…

Why the Pokemon anime hasn’t “evolved”

Credit to linked pixiv user

It never ceases to amaze me how practically everyone I’ve encountered from my generation who’s into anime, video games, or other branches of so-called “nerd” culture have, or at least did at one point, an affinity for Pokemon. It usually wasn’t just the Game Boy games that were a part of their childhood, but the Pokemon anime as well. A lot of them have played all the main series Pokemon games that have come out over the years, perhaps missing one or two due to temporary waning interest, but the Pokemon games have a way of bringing people back with new updates and features they add to each generation of games. But unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Pokemon anime series. Unlike the games that get more innovative while maintaining the same beloved premise, the Pokemon anime has stagnated over the years with the same unchanging characters, the same episodic style, and the same formulaic stories. While it has gotten a bit better recently, it still pales in comparison to other long-running kids anime in terms of storytelling quality. So why has the Pokemon anime remained so resistant to change, which has infuriated adult Pokemon players who want a decent show to go along with the games they love? Today I want to examine the reasons behind this…

First impressions of the spring ’15 anime I’m watching

Credit to linked pixiv user

I know last post I said I was gonna have a couple of editorials before my spring first impressions, but seeing as how I’ve watched two episodes of all but one of my spring anime picks, I decided to get this post out now =) Compared to the winter season, there are a lot more shows I’m interested in this spring!…

And here are my reviews of the last two anime I finished this season – Shirobako and Junketsu no Maria (a.k.a. Maria the Virgin Witch)…

Winter ’15 anime reviews part 1: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Parasyte, Death Parade

Another season of anime is coming to an end, and three out of the five I finished – Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Parasyte, and Shirobako – were actually leftover two-cours from fall. I only watched two actual winter ’15 anime, Virgin Witch Maria and Death Parade, both of which are only one-cour and end(ed) this season. I knew that cramming them all on one post would be too much, so I decided to break them up by reviewing these three today and the other two next week. So yes, here are my thoughts on Shigatsu Uso, Parasyte, and Death Parade…

It’s my birthday, again…

Today’s my 29th birthday, and being only a year away from the big 30, it’s a little scary. This past year has seen a lot of changes in my life, both in terms of blogging and personally…

Yumeka’s top 10 (non-Pokemon) video games

Even though it’s not my main hobby, I do enjoy playing video games now and then. As some of you are aware of, I’m much more of a video game connoisseur than what you’d call a “gamer” – there’s a handful of games and game series I enjoy, but I only pick up a new one once in a while and I certainly don’t play all of the very popular games. Pokemon has been my main game of choice for years, and I play it so much more than other video games that I consider it its own separate hobby. But there have been many other games that have made an impression on me over the years, and surprisingly I never really thought about which ones have been my all time favorites. So now it’s time to do that!…

Another batch of pictures (a.k.a, a filler post)

Unfortunately I just haven’t had the time to post this week due to school, doing some work for a friend, and other obligations. Next week is looking pretty busy too, but as always, I didn’t want to go too long without posting something. So I put together some fun anime and related pictures I’ve found around the Interwebs lately…

Fandom and the death of adulthood

Credit to linked pixiv user

Some months ago The New York Times published an article that I found quite intriguing and surprisingly applicable to anime fandom despite being seemingly unrelated to it. It’s called “The Death of Adulthood in American Culture” and it involves a film critic for The Times discussing how American society has changed over the decades in terms of what it means to be an adult; he cites popular TV shows, movies, and books that reflect how the old view of adulthood – being part of an authority-following, gender role-centered society – has been losing popularity in favor of a freer and more rebellious idea of adulthood, most notably one that embraces childhood and supposedly childish things rather than cast them off…that sounds like anime fandom to me!…
