My 12 moments of anime for 2013

As I’ve been doing since 2009, I’m once again participating in the anime blogsphere’s “12 Moments of Anime” project where we post our personal twelve biggest anime-related moments of the year throughout the month of December. As always due to lack of time, I’ll be posting my 12 moments all on one post here…

Continuing from last week’s post, here are the rest of my reviews for this season’s anime I completed (also threw in the final three episodes of OreImo since I haven’t discussed them yet)…

Examining anime criticism

As I strive to be an open-minded anime fan, I’m reminded time and time again that many things simply boil down to personal taste; that no matter how much I think a certain anime is great or another one is terrible, there will always be fans who feel completely different from me and have their own valid reasons for it. Inspired by posts from a couple of other bloggers, I felt like examining the concept of criticism within anime fandom specifically…

Belated spring ’13 anime reviews – Gargantia, Karneval, OreImo 2, Hataraku-Maou-sama! (plus Little Witch Academia)

Hey all, sorry for the brief hiatus, but the Anime Expo excitement is over and I’m now ready to resume regular blogging =) To get myself caught up, I first want to post my reviews of the recently finished spring anime I was watching: Suisei no Gargantia, Karneval, OreImo 2, Hataraku Maou-sama!, and I also threw in Little Witch Academia since I watched that within the past few weeks as well. I know these shows are old news now since everyone has moved on to the new summer ’13 anime, but I still wanted to write up my thoughts about them XD…

First impressions of the spring ’13 anime I’m watching

After a disappointing winter season, I’m happy to report that so far I’m pleased with the spring anime I’ve seen…

The significance of the second viewing

I’ve always believed that any great work of fiction that you enjoyed the first time should definitely be watched at least a second time – the first time it’s new to you and a lot of the value comes from surprises and novelty, while the second viewing allows you to focus on things like thoroughly examining the story, characters, and writing, and seeing how well its entertainment value holds up when you already know what’s going to happen. Anime is no different in this respect and there are many titles I’ve watched over the years where my opinion did change for worse or for better upon a second viewing…

My favorite anime character trope – examining the tsundere

Naming one’s favorite anime series or characters isn’t hard, but favorite anime character trope isn’t something we always think about, nor is it something an anime fan necessarily has. As a matter of fact, tropes could be something an anime fan dislikes since they’re likely to go hand-in-hand with cliches and pandering. But for those of us who don’t mind having our tastes catered to once in a while, we can’t help but notice character tropes in anime, and perhaps appreciate one…

My 5 favorite anime of 2010

Before I get to the main content of this post, I just want to apologize for the recent lack of blogging. I’ve been very ill this past week and haven’t been able to do much of anything except lie in bed in a fevered stupor. Currently I’m on the road to recovery but I’m still pretty weak. However, I wanted to keep up my New Year’s tradition of picking my five favorite anime from the passing year…

Final reflections on OreImou: CAN she be this cute?

Like other fans, OreImou has given me many topics to ponder over the course of its twelve episodes. In a previous post, I discussed six of these topics from the first five episodes. In this post, I’ll wrap things up with my thoughts until episode twelve…

Another look at the trend of frequently changing anime OPs and EDs

Earlier this year, I wrote a post about how many recent anime series have had openings and/or endings that change frequently in song, animation, or both, sometimes as often as every single episode. Though it’s happened in a few cases for older anime, it seems like the trend has really taken off this year…
