Eight years of owning an anime web site (or Anime Yume’s 8th anniversary)

Today, AnimeYume.com turns eight years old. Although the blog here is only about three and a half years old, I’ve been actively running an anime web site since mid-2002. Having my own space on the web to express my love for anime for nearly my entire history as a fan, has certainly been an impacting part of my life…

もうおやすみ by u

Since I’ve already written a fairly long post examining the appeal of Angel Beats!, on this post I’ll be discussing the opinions and questions I have about the series after completing it…

To adore or to analyze anime?

Over the years I’ve met all kinds of anime fans, both in real life and online, who love anime in different ways. I’ve come to realize that there are perhaps two main relationships to anime that fans could have…

How understandable is anime iconography?

The immortal sweat drop

We all know that anime utilizes a lot of unique animation techniques, stylized facial expressions, and iconography to emphasize certain character emotions and story points. These elements make anime stand out among Western animation, but I was wondering, just how universal is our beloved anime iconography? Could the techniques actually work against them as far as acquiring a wider range of appeal?

MAY in Round 4 of the Aniblog Tourney

I was pleasantly surprised that Mainichi Anime Yume managed to pull off a victory in Round 3 of the Aniblog Tourney by only four votes. I want to thank all those who voted for me! My match in Round 4 is underway, so I hope you’ll continue to support me. Once again, if you’re unsure about voting for MAY or not, I’ll direct you to my original tourney post, “Mainchi Anime Yume in the Aniblog Tourney,” which explains more about the kind of blog MAY is.

If you’ve made your decision, go ahead and visit the polls here. Even if I win this Round, I don’t expect to stand a chance against some of the massively popular blogs in the tourney. But I would like to see how far I can get =)

Happy voting~!

Why do we like anime songs?

For any anime we watch, chances are we’ll take an interest in the songs for that series, particularly the openings and endings. Many of us, myself included, become quite enamored with anime songs to the point of listening to them everyday and memorizing the lyrics. I’ve often wondered why we develop attachments to anime songs, especially when we usually can’t understand the words and they often have nothing to do with the show itself…

My most favorite non-Japanese comic

Back in January I wrote a post about my most favorite non-Japanese cartoon. Today I’m following up with that idea and writing about my most favorite non-Japanese comic. I’ve always been an avid fan of animated movies and TV shows, but I’ve only read a few non-Japanese comics. I never had that much interest in comic strips, but this one stands out to me in particular…

Don’t get discouraged when learning Japanese (because it’s easier than English)

I’ve been studying Japanese at college, abroad, and on my own since mid-2004. The most common reaction I get from people whom I talk to about it, or who are beginning to learn themselves, is that it must be an extremely difficult language. But over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that Japanese is actually a relatively easy language, and there are in fact numerous ways in which it’s easier to learn than English…

The experience of watching anime with my mom

My mom’s favorite anime

Although there are plenty of exceptions, most anime fans are teenagers or young adults. As with other things, the generation gap makes it difficult for older people to get into something like anime…
