Mainichi Anime Yume’s new layout! (and some other news)

With the feedback I’ve received from the Aniblog Tourney, I decided that MAY is indeed due for a new layout…

I’ve never gotten around to giving MAY a better layout because the Yahoo! version of WordPress that I’m using as an extension of my domain name (animeyume.com) is kind of primitive. It only offers me the plainest themes and I had to manually add things like the banner and Twitter sidebar. I don’t know anything about CSS or other factors of web site design, so after I finally got the blog looking as it did before, I was afraid I would make it look worse if I tried to change it myself.

Luckily, my friend pkjd over at moetron was nice enough to put together the new layout for MAY that you see here. I know the banner is kind of plain, but I’m planning to add a better one as soon as I can.

Please leave a comment on this post and let me know what you think of the new layout!

And while I’m at it, a few bits of other site news:

– Although my Round 4 match in the Aniblog Tourney is still going on, I think it’s pretty safe to say that I’ve lost since Kurogane is over 100 votes ahead of me. I was really surprised I managed to get this far though, and I want to thank everyone who supported me! ^_^ Your feedback helped give me the motivation to get MAY a new layout!

– This Thursday evening I’m going to the Los Angeles premiere of “The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” movie. I’ve already been to the San Fransisco premiere, but how could I pass up a chance to see the movie again when it’s less than an hour from my house XD If my experience isn’t too similar to the San Fran showing, I’ll probably write a post about it.

– I’ll be going to Anime Expo 2010 for two days on Friday and Saturday, July 2nd and 3rd. On Friday I’ll be attending the Megumi Nakajima/May’n concert, and on Saturday I’m planning to just hang out with friends and shop. If you see me there, feel free to say hi =)

– My summer work schedule for the next eleven weeks is going to be constantly changing, so that means my blogging schedule will too. I’m gonna try to stick to my usual routine of two to three posts a week, but the amount of days between posts may be kind of erratic.

Guess that’s it for updates. So yeah, feedback on the new layout would be appreciated =)

Definitely an improvement over the old theme… Anyways, keep up the good work. :p

  2. Dragonliger says:

it really looks great but, i think there’s something wrong with it, in my browsers (mozilla and internet explorer) it looks distorted, maybe there’s some bug on the page when using a big resolution?

  3. digital boy says:

w00t looks nice. Same theme GL used when he also desperately needed a theme change hehe

  4. Glo says:

Oh I like this a lot. Classy. Just another reason to vote MAY.

  5. Kabitzin says:

This theme is an order of magnitude better than the last one.

  6. Yumeka says:

Thanks everyone. Glad the new theme is an improvement. The one thing I still need to add is a “Reply” option for comments. Working on that.

    @ Dragonliger

Hmm, I’m not sure what could be wrong since no one else is having that problem. Do you experience that problem often? (is your resolution an unusual size?)

  7. Mystlord says:

Love the new theme! Much better than the last one. Anyway, I’m also going to the convention on Friday and Saturday (looking through the schedule, those are the only two days worth going!), so I’ll say hi if I see you :)

  8. Prooof says:

    New theme looks much better.

“I don’t mind losing but it would be a shame to lose to a blog that I’ve never even heard of until now.”
That’s even worse than -there is hope in humanity if rc is beaten-.

  9. Eri says:

Congratulations Yumeka~ It was a wise decision to change the layout. personally, I think it’s great! And don’t worry about the banner. Banners usually don’t play an important role in you readers’ opinion about you and on top of that, I think a plain banner is sometimes better. I don’t think a really colorful one would much like that with your new layout so there’s nothing to be ashamed of ;)
And don’t worry about aniblogtourney. As I see it, it’s just a fight between the “BIG ONES”. Mediocre or “something more than average” bloggers like us don’t really stand a chance. It’s like the World Cup of anime bloggers. I didn’t personally took part in it but that’s my perspective on the matter.
Once again, I congratulate you for your improvement. Keep up with the good work! :D

  10. Hypernova says:

While this new theme is very nice, I kind of think that it’s not “unique”. Sure, the old theme looks like something incomplete, but I feel like it’s really unique to your site.

Don’t worry about it too much though. Just a thought I have when I see this.

  11. Scamp says:

I like the header, don’t think it needs changing. The art style suits the theme better than a full colour picture would

  12. Well, this is much better than before!

Sorry about the jibes on the layout earlier, but hey, it’s actually done you much more good now! At least your readers won’t suffer from misplaced <div>’s anymore!

  13. Aorii says:

Magnitudes better! ( ^^)b TBH the weird old theme and narrow post panel was quite the turnoff when reading your site

  14. Dragonliger says:

I use 1680 x 1050 resolution. it is curious, if you want i can send you a screenshot of the problem. It’s strange cause this never happened before with the old layout

  15. Toonleap says:

Good job on the new layout…and of course, Haruhi and Kyon at the top…Why I am not surprised?…. :)

  16. Reason says:

Wowz, the ability to adapt when faced with criticism is rare and valuable.
    Hooooooly shit, I’m baffled.

I suppose these contest things have got their merits.

[While this new theme is very nice, I kind of think that it’s not “unique”]
The feeling of ‘uniqueness’ associated with the previous theme isn’t the type of uniqueness anyone should try to attain or persist…

  17. Rakuen says:

The banner is perfect, leave it alone.

Also, to echo everyone else, this layout is way better than the old one! :]

  18. Yumeka says:

Once again, thanks for the feedback everyone. In regards to the banner, I may leave it up for a while. It depends on whether my friend (who’s good with Photoshop) can make one for me that’s to my liking (I’m kind of picky with things like that =P)

The only minor problem I’ve noticed with the new layout is that, with the wider dimensions, the post pictures that I didn’t add the center html tags to have noticeably veered off to the left. I probably won’t go through and fix all of them since I don’t think it looks too messy. Maybe just a few.

    @ Mystlord

Thanks, maybe I’ll see you there =D

    @ Eri

Thanks, I’m quite satisfied making it this far in the tourney.

    @ Kurogane

Congrats on getting so many votes and good luck in the rest of the tourney! =)

    @ Dragonliger

I’m not sure what I can do about it since no one else is having that problem. I will mentioned it to my friend who worked on the layout though.

    @ Reason

This theme seems fine for now, but maybe one day when I have the time, I’ll look carefully through the different themes and use a more unique one.

  19. xueqir says:

    LOOKS GREAT ~! <3

  20. Canne says:

This is indeed a nice theme; refreshing yet still the same anime yume I knew.
Oh, Kurogane is really popular. So you are joining me in the aniblog tourney afterlife…you won’t be lonely, I can assure you o_O

  21. Tara says:

I like the new theme ^^ It’s simple but neat and the image in the banner looks really nice. Usually I prefer coloured pictures but that one looks really good and fits well on the white ^^

  22. Jan Suzukawa says:

I liked the old header/banner, with the five Haruhi characters looking like someone cast a spell on them. ;) The new one is also cute, though. Congrats on the new layout!

  23. I really like the change in header – it looks a lot more professional than your previous one. It’s also just nice to switch it up every so often.
