Do your favorite anime have to be ongoing?

While thinking back on all the anime series I was ever obsessed with, or in other words, all the anime I had ever considered my favorite at some point in time, they were all ongoing series. I know it’s natural for fans to obsess over new and popular series rather than old ones that have ended, but for the me the trend has been very consistent…

Pokemon Black & White: questioning the morality of the franchise

Everyone interested in the new Pokemon games, Black and White, has more or less dabbled in some part of the games by now. Even in the anime blogsphere, lots of reviews and daily gaming logs have been popping up. But since I’ve already written a review of the game when I got the Japanese version, and I don’t have that much to add after playing the English version, I decided to focus this post on the specific conflict of the games’ storyline. It’s a conflict that has intrigued players because it does something unexpected – it questions the very morality of the Pokemon world…

The difference between obligation and passion in anime fandom

Even though being a part of anime fandom naturally means you love anime, I sometimes feel that certain things I do within the fandom aren’t always for the sake of passion, but rather, a sense of obligation for being a part of it all…

Miku Hatsune and the importance of official canon in anime

初音ミク by 歪歪waiwai

I’ve never had interest in being a part of the Vocaloid fandom, but I do have a ton of respect for it and acknowledge its importance in the otaku world. However, a recent question about the popularity of Miku Hatsune via Ask John got me thinking about the differences between Vocaloids and other anime characters in terms of fan appeal…

Honorifics in anime

Honorifics are a fun part of the Japanese language, especially in the way they spice up the uniqueness of anime for English speaking fans. As most of us will agree, there are tons of anime with fantastic character relationship development and depictions of character interactions. It’s also equally amazing what a major yet subtle role honorifics play in this and how they can offer various interpretations of the characters…

The World God Only Knows: can true love exist outside the real world?

The World God Only Knows started out as another light comedy series that pokes fun at an aspect of the otaku world. However, as the series progresses, the arcs involving each of the girls that Keima encounters became increasingly more involved and complex – Ayumi’s was forgettable, Mio’s was interesting but still typical, and Kanon’s was quite dramatic. I felt that Shiori’s arc however, was the most compelling and brilliantly conveyed an overall message that the series itself is trying to tell, through Shiori and through Keima himself…

Another look at the trend of frequently changing anime OPs and EDs

Earlier this year, I wrote a post about how many recent anime series have had openings and/or endings that change frequently in song, animation, or both, sometimes as often as every single episode. Though it’s happened in a few cases for older anime, it seems like the trend has really taken off this year…

To be generic, or to be unique?

A recent post by Valence got me thinking about “generic anime vs unique anime.” Even though many fans, myself included, admit that most anime produced nowadays has a generic plot with cliche character archetypes, we’re still drawn to them. What makes anime appealing even though it’s become much like other forms of media entertainment – formulaic and driven by popular tropes…

1,500 words in defense of moe

I’ve tackled the moe debate indirectly in previous posts, but I haven’t yet went head on with it. So here I go, a post of 1,500 words about why moe does not deserve the negative treatment that many Western anime fans give it…

A series of mini-reflections on OreImou and otakuism

The five episodes of OreImou that have aired so far have given me a number of otaku-related subjects to ponder. This post is a collection of six short essays about specific topics that OreImou has made me reflect on, both in terms of the show itself, as well as my own personal experiences…
