For roughly my first three years of being an anime fan, I only had a couple of friends who shared my interest. As most of us have known for years, the average American either does not know anything about anime, or has a very distorted idea of what it is. By “distorted,” I mean that they think anime is just one of two things – kiddy cartoons from Japan, or pornographic or overly violent animation for questionable adults – a “porn and Pokemon” misconception as I call it…

Anyone who’s familiar with a fair amount of anime knows just how common high school life, and characters who are high school students themselves, are in many genres of anime. Some may say the reason for this simply comes down to target audience, but I think there’s more to it than that…
I’m sure many of you have read a recent editorial posted on Bang Zoom!’s Anime TV web site. The relatively short article (which can be read here) consists of Bang Zoom! president Eric Sherman’s bleak prediction of the future of anime – that the continuation of illegal downloads will bring about the demise of the industry.
I don’t have the time or patience to read through the nearly 200 comments on the post, nor the many comments about it on other sites. So I’m just going to discuss my own thoughts about it here…
