Summer ’14 anime reviews part 1: Tokyo Ghoul and Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun

The summer 2014 anime season is coming to an end and once again I’ll be reviewing the series that I watched all the way through. Only two ended this week, so I’ll be reviewing the remaining four next time. So for now, what did I think of one of the most horrifying and one of the funniest anime I’ve seen in a while?…

I’ve touched on this topic in bits and pieces in other posts, but I don’t believe I’ve actually delved into it fully. It’s an idea that permeates anime fandom, or really, all communities of media fandoms where people tend to judge one another based on the game or show they like, and people who take such criticisms of their hobbies as personal insults. This is a favorites list I’ve been wanting to make for a while and now I finally feel like I’m ready! As many of you know, I’m not just a fan of anime but of the animation medium in general, especially animated movies. But despite being a fan of animated movies long before I was a fan of anime, I never actually made a list of my favorites. So for this post and the next, that’s what I’ll be doing…

Are some anime genres inherently bad?

We all have our preferred genres of anime, but there’s some common opinion among fans that certain genres are somehow inherently better or worse than others. Today I want to think about why or why not that could be true…

How I write and enjoy anime reviews

Since I just finished writing a bunch of anime reviews over the past few posts, I figured now is a good time to bring up this topic that I’m sure anyone who reads and/or writes anime reviews has thought about: what makes them enjoy reading certain kinds of reviews over others, and if they write reviews themselves, what kind of voice and structure do they give their reviews…
