10 years of AnimeYume

This past June 30th marked the 10-year anniversary of my domain name, AnimeYume.com. I would have mentioned it sooner, but as usual around that time of year, I was busy with Anime Expo and writing my reviews of completed seasonal anime. I decided that today would be a good day to post about it since, while Mainichi Anime Yume is only 6 years old, this is the blog’s 600th post…

The episodic blog and the editorial blog

In hind-sight of the recently completed 2nd Aniblog Tourney, chikorita157 wrote a post regarding the ever common argument that arises when talking about anime blogs – which is better, episodic blogs that post reviews of episodes of whatever seasonal series the blogger is watching, or editorial blogs that post about anime topics in general…

Interpretations of time-travel in anime

Time-travel has been a popular trope in science fiction media for a long time, and anime is no exception. While not extremely common in anime, there are nevertheless a handful of titles where time-travel plays an important role. Today I want to examine how time-travel is interpreted differently in a few such anime…

The overrated anime

Even someone like me who’s easy to please when it comes to anime, and can enjoy most series that I feel are at least mediocre, comes across a few that I see as overrated. It’s part of human nature that anything that becomes very popular will also invoke a lot of people to claim that it’s overrated, anime fandom being no different…

Your anime community

A carnival post from The Beautiful World brings up the interesting concept of anime communities. To me, such a community would be a place among a group of anime fans I enjoy being with, whether in person or online. There are all kinds of anime communities, the majority of which are online nowadays, as well as some fans who don’t have any desire for a community at all. Today I’d like to take a look at the different kinds of anime communities…

The importance of subtitle quality

A recent post by @fkeroge talked about how subtitle quality can vary between official subtitles and fansubs, with the official ones not always being the most accurate. But ultimately, the only way one can get the original experience of watching an anime how it was intended, is to learn Japanese and watch it raw. Obviously this isn’t an option for a lot of people, so I’d like to explore the topic of subtitle quality further…

Anime franchises

When we say we’re into a certain anime, in a lot of cases it doesn’t mean that we’re only into the anime; pretty much all anime series are in some form or other part of a media franchise. They’re an anime but also a manga, light novel, video game, trading card game, collection of toys, or any number of mediums. I wonder how many anime fans get into all the franchise branches of a particular series, or whether they’re content to just watch the anime and nothing more…

Thoughts on anime burnout

We’ve probably all come across someone, whether in real life or online, who was once very enthusiastic about anime only to claim later on that they’ve “burned out” on it. I’ve never experienced anime burnout myself, but I have heard many different reasons for it over the years…

Knowing an anime’s story beforehand

A recent post by Marth brings up the idea of how our perception of an anime adaptation can be greatly influenced by our prior knowledge of the anime’s original source material. This can apply to all forms of media really, such as book-to-movie adaptations or movie retellings of TV series. In anime fandom, there’s strong opinions among those who intensely care about faithfulness to the source material and those who don’t know or care…

What kind of blog commenter are you?

I’m getting close to six years of blogging now and during this time I’ve picked up on the variety of ways people comment on blogs, whether they own a blog themselves or just read them. Naturally the diversity of blog comments and the authors behind them can’t all be categorized nicely, but I have noticed some interesting blog commenter trends…
