Expanding casts of anime characters

Ace Railgun recently brought up the topic of how casts of characters in anime are handled, whether the series has a large and gradually expanding cast or a small, consistent one. It’s interesting to think about how the number of characters in an anime can affect the overall quality, especially in regards to how many episodes the series has…

Anime tastes I’ve acquired

A recent post by Leap250 talks about how, through our years of being anime fans, we often acquire tastes for certain genres and tropes in anime that we didn’t originally have. Even though I’ve always been pretty open-minded as far as the types of anime I watch, there were a few I was hesitant about back in the day that I like now…

How we judge anime characters

A couple of blogs have recently posted lists of anime characters who are well loved among the fandom, but they personally don’t care for. It got me thinking about what each of our individual idea is of a likable character versus an unlikable one, and just like our preference for favorite anime in general, one person’s “worst” is another person’s “best.” However, because anime characters don’t have as many facets as anime series in general, I think our opinions about them tend to be more polarized – we either love (mostly) everything about them or we dislike (mostly) everything about them. So today I felt like examining how we judge anime characters…

Growing up in a world of fandoms

One thing that I’ve often thought about is how our generation is the first to experience full immersion in the technological media world from childhood to adulthood. If you were born in the 80s or later, you’re among the first generation of kids to grow up in the media-centered world of cable TV, video games, video rentals, and most importantly, the Internet. Anime is one among many fandoms that have been able to flourish because of this sudden proliferation of technology we’ve seen come about in just a couple of decades…

Anime and endless possibilities

The question of why we enjoy watching anime is a very basic one, but probably one we don’t often think about unless prompted. In an old post I wrote a couple of years ago, I listed some general reasons for liking anime such as the great variety of stories and emphasis on character development. Today I wanted to go further with one of the reasons I listed for liking anime – because it’s animation – and discuss why that’s so important to its appeal…

The measure of a good anime

A few weeks ago, Bradley from Those Damn Cartoons! wrote a post of the same name as this one in which he discussed what he feels constitutes a “good” anime (using The Idolmaster anime as an example). I agree that his measurement is a viable one that many of us don’t think about, and I felt like expanding on it in a post of my own…

Spoilers in anime reviewing

In a recent post on EmptyBlue, Feal87 discusses the issue of spoilers in anime review blogs, particularly how to make spoiler-free episodic posts and post titles. Since I only write full series reviews of anime, I thought it would be interesting to address the topic of spoilers in regards to those kinds of posts, and for anime reviewing in general…

Violence in the media and anime

Canne recently wrote a post about violence in the media in regards to the “Dark Knight shooting,” and John wrote a related post about whether the shooting could somehow affect anime releases in the US. Both posts piqued my interest as well as my agreement – I agree with John that the incident won’t affect anime and I agree with Canne that the media is not to blame…

The order of watching anime

In a recent post on deluscar, Kai talks about how the order of watching anime with multiple installments can affect our enjoyment of it…

The roots of our fandom

When I think of where my anime fandom originated, I know that it started with my obsession with Pokemon back in the late 90s. However, the roots of it go back further than that – perhaps the origin of my eventual anime fandom can be traced back to how I related to all the fads I ever went through as a kid…
