Name that anime

It’s been a hectic week for me due to increased work hours because of Thanksgiving, my seasonal allergies acting up and making me feel crappy, and trying to cram in last minute studying for the JLPT, which is this Sunday. So because of all this, I’m not up to my usual lengthy post today. Instead, I’m just gonna post a quick and (I hope) fun little activity – “Name that anime”…

I’ve seen other anime sites and blogs do something like this before, but the idea is to look at anime screencaps and figure out what anime they’re from. To make it challenging, I picked screencaps from anime that I don’t think many people have seen. But I also made sure they’re not too vague; if you’ve seen the anime, or are just familiar with it in some way, you should be able to tell that the screencap is from that anime. So try to see how many of the 12 anime below you can recognize (sorry they’re not all great quality – some of these titles are pre-HD after all).

In a day or so I’ll post the answers here too, but try and guess as many as you can for now ;) Feel free to list your guesses or ask for hints in the comments…I may just offer a hint or two XD Let me know if you enjoy it too as I may do another “Name that anime” if I need another filler post in the future. Have fun and I’ll be back next week with a better post (most likely my coverage of the LA premiere of Madoka movie 3!) Also, wish me luck on the JLPT this Sunday~

I’m a little sad by how few of those I recognize…and i’ve only watched half of the ones I recognized >.<

I'm guessing that 3 is Medabots and 8 is Ocean Waves (or one of the other more obscure Ghibli films).

Still, it's a fun idea so I vote that you keep it up!

  2. Justin says:

Huh. I recognize a decent bunch, though two shows looks familiar, I just can’t place their names. Oh well, I can at least help everyone else trying to figure out what anime this has come from.

    2) Denpa teki na kanojo

    3) Metabots

    5) Dance in the Vampire Bund

    7) Rainbow!!! (yeahhhhh!!!)

    9) Fighting Foodons (I recognized the look: it aired on Fox Box many, many years. With that knowledge, I searched it and found it ^_^)

    10) looks familiar, can’t remember the name.

    11) Looks like something I’ve seen somewhere, but I can’t remember the name.

  3. Cytrus says:

    2. Denpateki na Kanojo – Great anime, incredible novels.

I don’t think you require any luck this Sunday. Still, I’ll send some over just to be sure :D.

    • Yumeka says:

Denpateki na Kanojo was pretty awesome =)

Thanks for the good luck wishes~ I think I will need it since there’s still a handful of N3 kanji, vocab, and grammar I haven’t committed to memory yet >.<

  4. Vii says:

Good luck with the JLPT! I’m taking it too, and I’m starting to panic a bit now that it’s the day after tomorrow (eek!)
I don’t recognize any of them :( I feel really bad now. #9 looks familiar for some reason so I have a feeling it’s an anime I plan to watch, but I can’t think of the name of it.

  5. chikorita157 says:

None of them seems to be familiar for the fact that I haven’t quite a lot of shows… But still, good luck on the JPLT… I plan on possibly taking the JPLT 4 next year since I’m already familiar with all the beginning and higher-beginner Japanese and that most of my master’s degree will be finished by then. But still, the kanji remains the tricky part since I keep forgetting the readings… Maybe once I get my new tablet with an active stylus, I will start practicing them.

    • Yumeka says:

Thanks =) If you do take the JLPT, I would recommend starting with N5 just so you can get a feel for what the test is like (since it’s quite a different experience than just self-study). But if you feel that confident, then sure, go for N4. Not sure if you saw it but a while ago I shared a link on Twitter of the site I’ve been using for self-study. It’s extremely helpful as it lists all the kanji, vocab, and grammar you need to know for each level.

      • chikorita157 says:

I saw the website a while back, but I plan on taking a past N5 test to get a feel of the test. I have a look at it a little bit and it feels too easy as I already know all the basic grammar and probably know all the Kanji in it too… but of course, while I learn a good amount of the grammar from N3 and N2, I’m not that comfortable to jump that far. I think N4 will be okay since I know the grammar well there, just need to focus on the other stuff.

  6. Frog says:

I’ve only seen four of the twelve anime you listed here, which makes me think I should catch up on my older anime! They were, in no particular order so that no one can cheat looking at my answers: The Earl and the Fairy, Medabots, Living the Day After Tomorrow and Denpa Teki na Kanojo.

    • Yumeka says:

You are correct =) (I’ve actually never heard Asatte no Houkou translated that way…I’ve only heard it as “The Direction of the Day After Tomorrow.” I like the translation you have better though =P)

  7. Myna says:

    2. Denpa Teki na Kanojo
    4. Tactics
    5. Dance in the Vampire Bund
    6. Bakuretsu Hunters
    7. Rainbow
    8. Only Yesterday
    10. Amatsuki
    11. El Hazard
    12. Earl & Fairy

Good luck with JLPT and I’d love to see another “Name that anime” post sometime soon.

    • Justin says:

Damn it, I thought I recognized it, just couldn’t remember the name. El Hazard. THAT aired on TV in the US. And I couldn’t remember the name. *Sigh*

    • Yumeka says:

I knew you’d know pretty much all of them since you’ve seen so much anime XD Next time I do a post like this I’ll have to try and stump you more!

Thanks for the good luck wishes~

  8. jimmy says:

Of the five of these series I know, I only recognised the three I’d seen: Dance in the Vampire Bund (although my brain tried to tell me it was a different Shaft series with a blond loli vampire), Only Yesterday and Denpa Teki no Kanojo. I’m kind of annoyed for not recognising Rainbow, though.

Yeah, then I gave up on and looked the rest up. Are Asatte no Houkou and Hakushaku to Yousei any good?

    Good luck on the JPLT!

    • Yumeka says:

Asatte no Houkou is quite a nice little drama series. Hakushaku to Yousei is alright though I don’t remember it that well.

Thanks for the good luck wishes =)

  9. Kinza Datteri says:

#1 Asatte no Houkou. It was very, very pleasant slice of life/romance/coming of age story with a little bit of a magic spice. I watched it during lazy summer as it was a perfect series to relax. I recommend it.

  10. Adziu says:

Darrn, every single one got before I got here. I was hoping to flex my anime knowledge chops, too!

  11. Kal says:

Wow… I only recognized #3… But, that does not make me sad at all!! that just tells me there are still many more anime titles I have not seen yet, and who knows, one of them may become a favorite :D

    Good luck on the test!

  12. I don’t think I know any of these, though some look familiar. O_O

My casual guess for #3 would be Gurren Lagann, since the robot looks kind of dorky and there were dorky-looking mechas in that show. No. 8 looks Miyazaki-ish, but I don’t know which one it would be.

Well! You’ve stumped me. =D And I was going to email you and wish you good luck on the JLPT, but I’ll do it here. GOOD LUCK!!! =D

    • Yumeka says:

#3 does have dorky robots but it’s not Gurren Lagann XD And you’re right that #8 looks Miyazaki-ish since it’s a Ghibli film (not directed by him though).

And just to throw it out there, I think you’d like #4, #7, and #10. #7 has good shonen themes and #4 and #10 have old-Japan and yaoi themes XD

      • I’m surprised you’ve seen Tactics, as I know it has yaoi-ish scenes. ;-) It’s on my maybe-watch list and has been for a long time. Have heard of Amatsuki, but didn’t know it had BL in it. And I’ve never heard of Rainbow before, but will consider it now. =D

        • Yumeka says:

I watched Tactics because I received the DVD box set as a b-day gift from a friend several years ago :3 You’re welcome to borrow it if you want.

It’s been a long time since I watched Amatsuki so I’m not totally sure it has BL or not…I do remember bishonen though XD

Rainbow is quite violent and has extremely gut-wrenching shonen drama. I think you’d like it.

  13. Rioraku says:

Argh…a few of those do look a little familiar but….I’m drawing blanks. @_@

  14. Overlord-G says:

    #1 is Asatte no Houko
    #3 is Medabots
#5 is Dance in the Vampire Bund
#7 is RAINBOW. I don’t know the full name. I just know it’s the one with the juvenile delinquents who were sort of wrongfully imprisoned.

I don’t know the other ones.

  15. Shikon says:

    #3: Medabots maybe?
#5: Dance in the Vampire Bund perhaps?

Wow, this was difficult, I don’t even remotely remember/know any of these series XD the ones I do somewhat recognize are complete guesses. This was fun! You should do these more often, maybe next time I’ll be able to guess more than 2! =D

  16. Paul says:

i only recognised medabots, tactics, only yesterday and dance in the vampire bund but you’ve given me something to do for the next few days. Thanks :)
