12 moments of anime 2009: #11 English release of Haruhi Suzumiya novels

Continuing with my 12 moments of anime for 2009 (in order of significance to me personally), here’s #11:

Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #11: English release of Haruhi Suzumiya novels

I loved the Haruhi novels when I read Baka-Tsuki’s fan translations back in 2007. I even read through all 9 volumes a second time in 2008. I wasn’t sure if an official English release would happen or not, but thankfully, Yen Press began releasing the series, starting with volume 1, “The Melancholy,” in April 2009. Volume 2, “The Sigh,” was released this past October. Despite some mixed feelings about their choice of paperback covers and lack of translator’s notes, I’m extremely pleased with Yen Press’ English release of this great series. As I discussed in my full-review of the English novels, the translation is excellent and I hope Yen Press continues to release the novels at a steady pace. If volume 10, which has been on hiatus for over two years, doesn’t come out any time soon, the English releases may even catch up to the Japanese ones XD
