Worlds of Haruhi Suzumiya visual novel

Worlds of Haruhi Suzumiya (WoHS) is a fan-made visual novel created by English-speaking fans. The novel incorporates a unique crossover storyline using characters from Haruhi and other anime, as well as original characters. The WoHS staff started work on the novel in 2008 and have since completed the prologue and chapter 1…

I’m usually not interested in fan fiction or similar things, but after playing through chapter 1 of WoHS, the story ended up being quite impressive and echos the creativity of Haruhi creator Nagaru Tanigawa.

The prologue of the novel opens with interesting overshadowing about parallel worlds and different dimensions.

In the novel, you play as Alan, a transfer student coming to Japan from Canada. While on the plane, Alan is mysteriously dropped off in Japan without a place to stay or any memory of his trip.

Haruhi finds him sleeping on a park bench. Since North High is indeed the school he’s supposed to attend, she drags him to her house to stay the night, then forces him into the SOS Brigade the following day.

The plot of the story starts to surface when Alan meets three Dimensional Sliders, the other mysterious beings Haruhi had wished for – Saya (from Black Cat), Kanata (from Lucky Star), and Fuuko (from Clannad).

The Sliders explain to Alan about the realms of fiction and reality and how their job is to keep the worlds balanced and protect them from demons by traveling through different dimensions.

They’re currently trying to find out more about Alan and how to get him back to the world he came from. Chapter 1 ends around this point.

The images used in the novel are vectors or other artwork and most of the music is familiar Haruhi tunes.

What I like most about WoHS so far is how it stays true to the characters’ personalities as well as the intricate, ambiguous sci-fi elements that are very similar to the original Haruhi novels. And anyone who knows Saya, Kanata, and Fuuko knows that they’re pretty mysterious and thus good candidates to be Sliders who move through different dimensions (different anime worlds).

I also admire how serious the WoHS staff seem to be with this project. In addition to their web site, which has an active forum and general information, they have a Wiki page which details everything from staff positions, current progress on the project, and upcoming story arcs and character appearances they have planned.

If this visual novel sounds appealing to you, you can try out the prologue+chapter 1 via the beta v2 that’s available on their forum). The WoHS staff definitely deserve some attention for undertaking such a big creative project. I hope they’re able to keep it up and will release at least another chapter some time this year.

And a thank you goes out to HaruhiSuzumiya.net for first bringing WoHS to my attention.

wow it seems like a great idea. It sounds perfect plus Saya!!!! XD and Fuuko!!!! though i think they got Konata’s name wrong. XPP

    @ Dragonliger

No it’s right, the Lucky Star character in the game is Konata’s mother Kanata. If you haven’t seen all of Lucky Star, she appeared (as a ghost) in one of the later episodes.

I guess they picked the right characters. Those 3 characters that appeared here are pretty much ghosts in their real stories.
