Anime Outburst

Like with my past post about anime lateral thinking puzzles, I enjoy taking established games or activities and “anime-ifying” them. I remember we played anime Pictionary, Charades, and Jeopardy in my old anime club and it was lots of fun. Today I’ll be anime-ifying a lesser known game called Outburst…

Outburst is usually played in groups though it can also be played with as little as two people. One person (or group) picks a card that has two topics on it, one on either side. They pick the topic they want, then in under three minutes they have to shout out as many things as they can think of for that topic. For example, let’s say the topic is “Things in a Bakery.” The card will have ten things associated with that printed on it, for example, “bread,” “cakes,” “cookies,” etc,. If the person (or group) that picked the topic shouts out one of the ten things printed on the card, the other person (or group) will take note of it. When the three minutes are up, you get points based on how many of the ten you got.

The tricky part is that many of the topics have tons of possible answers, but you’ll only get points if you say one of the ten on the card. So for the “Bakery” example, even if you say something obviously correct like “flour,” if it’s not on the card you won’t get a point.

Here are ten Anime Outburst topics I’ve come up with. Time yourself for three minutes each and see how many points you can get! =D Once you hear the timer alarm go off, highlight the text below each topic name to see the ten answers.

So that’s an example of Anime Outburst =) How many did you get out of 100?

There are lots more topics you can come up with by simply tweaking the above topics, for example, changing the 2008 one to a different year, the Rie Kugimiya one to another seiyuu, the Evangelion one to another anime franchise, and so on. Perhaps one day I’ll actually make cards out of these topics and play Anime Outburst with friends XD

  1. Myna says:

This is like the opposite of Taboo!
    Okay, here I go!

    Merchandise: 4/10
    Blue hair: 2/10
    2008: 2/10
Convention: 1/10, maybe 2/10 if special guests count as seiyuus :P
Cats: 3/10, 4/10 if just mentioning Nyan Koi counts
    Madhouse: 2/10
Rie Kugimiya: 1/10 I forgot about Shannon!
    Evangelion: 6/10
    Episodes: 4/10
    Ghibli: 9/10 :D

  2. The fact that business card holders made the list of merchandise but anime CDs (singles and soundtrack albums alike) didn’t means I still have a looooooooong ways to go orz

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, the trick is that the ten things should be a mix of both obvious things and less obvious things (like business card holders…I know they sound weird but I saw a lot of them at Akihabara and at online stores that ship from Japan). Sorry anime CDs didn’t make it on there XD

  3. du5k says:

    Eeh, only got 19/100…

    There’s two spirited away?

    • Yumeka says:

I know, this is one of those things that seems easy but isn’t really…it’s funny how many obvious answers we fail to recall when we have to XD

Whoops, that was a mistake! Fixed it…thanks for pointing it out ^^,,,

  4. H says:

    Cool.
    bye.
    –End–

  5. Kal says:

Oh gosh, I never liked these kind of games :S I got 3 from Ghibli, and 4 others, and that’s it. And I even cheated! I took way more than 3 minutes, and still nothing. I could not think up of a single anime cat :S:S:S And I’ve seen all the Ghibli movies!!! /cry

While I can recite what an anime is about with pretty good detail, and the different interactions and plot twists, I have a terrible memory for details like names, or hair colours. Even as a kid, I was bad at these games :(

  6. 2DT says:

    Well, that was fun.

  7. Joe says:

    Merchandise: 5
    Blue hair: 1
    2008 series: 0
    Convention: 3
    Cats: 0
Madhouse: 0 (I really don’t know my studios)
Rie Kugimiya: 0 (I don’t know who this is)
Evangelion: 5 (my favorite series and I pretty much choked under pressure
Episodes: 3 (a lot to choose from here)
    Ghibli: 7

    total: 24/100

    • Yumeka says:

Sorry, for the episode one I meant more than 26 episodes but less than 100. So I changed it to “27-100” to make this more clear…sorry for the confusion!

I’ve only become moderately familiar with anime studios and RieKugi roles within the past few years so don’t feel bad (and RieKugi is one of the most popular seiyuu. She’s known for voicing tsundere characters, and Al from FMA).

Seems like the merchandise and Ghibli ones have been the easiest for people =)

  8. If you know the tastes of the person who makes up the card, it would probably help you to win this game. In other words, if you know which 10 anime cats are their favorites, then you can guess which ones will be on their card and then shout out those 10 cats… The blue hair question immediately brought to mind every green-haired anime character I’d ever seen, but only a few blue-haired ones… It’s odd how being given a prompt and a time limit can spark different lines of thought in one’s mind.(!) :) It’s almost like a creativity exercise.

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, if you know what anime the person is familiar with, that could definitely be helpful. With that, it would be more challenging to play with someone whose tastes you don’t know, like at a convention or something XD Actually, when I made up these ten topics, I did a little research for some of them so as not to only use answers I’m familiar with.

  9. I did all right. I actually came up with a number of blue-haired characters, but other than Ami they weren’t the ones from your list, haha. I think I might have to make up a set of this game and play with my friends when I have a group. (This is what I get for having so many long-distance friends; I only see most of them for conventions.)

    • Yumeka says:

If you make an online version of your topics, I’d like to give them a try =) (unless you do decide to play the game at a convention that I happen to be at XD)

  10. Tara says:

I got a total of 28 points XP I skipped the studio one since I don’t recognize the studio name and I haven’t seen Evangelion so I totally failed at that one, but I thought I did okay with the rest. Mostly I just had the usual memory problem when trying to remember something specific lol
Anyways, this was strangely much fun so thanks a lot for sharing =D
