Kaichou wa Maid-sama! review

My review of Kaichou wa Maid-sama!…

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is a shojo series, a slightly above average one in my opinion, that’s focused mostly on the light, romantic comedy style of shojo anime as opposed to the emotional dramatic style. From the first episode and on, one can see that the colors in the series are sharp and vibrant, with the characters constantly being chibi-fied and drawn with many types of comedic anime iconography. The show even goes so far as to put in bubbly backgrounds and on-screen text for things like sound effects and descriptions of what a character is feeling or doing, further increasing the “light, funny shojo manga” mood of the series. In this sense, Maid-sama! is a shojo series like Kare Kano and Itazurana Kiss as opposed to Kimi ni Todoke and Vampire Knight. However, while the former two titles tend to be more comedic, they also have plenty of drawn-out scenes of emotional monologues and tear-jerking drama. Maid-sama!, however, is faithfully consistent with being a light romance comedy, with its few dramatic scenes never being enough to make your eyes water.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! follows a very familiar shojo plot – at least one of the main characters is reluctant or uncertain about their feelings for the other, and episodes are composed of situations that force them to become closer, while also giving time to subplots involving minor characters from time to time. In the case of Maid-sama! however, I was surprised at how relatively few episode took the focus away from the main couple, Misaki and Usui. Even episodes revolving around minor characters like Kanou and Hinata led to some relationship development for Misaki and Usui. There were some exceptions, such as the episodes about Aoi and Sakura and UmeMishi, but for the most part the series puts the majority of its focus on the main couple.

So now that I’ve established that Maid-sama! is all about comedy and the romance of its two main characters, how does it fare with these themes? For comedy, I have to admit that I don’t think I laughed at much of anything in the series besides a few humorous exchanges between Misaki and Usui. Maybe it’s because the overall comical feel of the show didn’t make any of the funny scenes stand out, or perhaps the style of humor just doesn’t affect my funny bone. It’s not that the hyperbolic comedy and character-driven gags weren’t fun to me, just not funny, if that makes any sense.

As for the romance between our main couple, Misaki and Usui, I thought it was executed pretty well and enjoyed almost all of their scenes together. I did notice that their relationship throughout the series didn’t really develop much – from beginning to end, Usui was in continuous love with Misaki while Misaki was in continuous denial of him. It was only in a few later scenes, and of course the last episode, where we see that she’s finally getting over her reluctance. The fact that Misakai wants to keep her part-time job as a maid a secret seems like it’s going to be an important plot element at first, but besides being a device for some filler-ish episode plots and a few instances of bribery from Usui, it becomes less important as the series progresses (kind of like Nogizaka Haruka’s secret).

Looking at our couple as individual characters, Misaki is definitely in the class of tomboyish, tsundere shojo protagonists as opposed to meek, girly ones. I like the fact that she’s tough without being bitchy and tsundere without being violent. Her main flaw is that a lot of the things she says and does are typical of her character archetype. Usui on the other hand, is quite unique in my opinion, and I found him to be one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in a while. He’s open to his feelings for Misaki right from the beginning and never falters, but he also loves to mess with her and act in vague, mischievous ways that confuse her into getting closer to him, while at the same time he’s always there when she needs him to save her from harm. I could never predict whether he was going to be honest and affectionate or manipulative and sneaky. As far as shojo male protagonists go, he’s not your typical nice guy or your typical snob, but somewhere in between. He’s just full of surprises.

The rest of the Maid-sama! characters have their own charms, though none of them are that memorable (besides our “trap” Aoi perhaps?) But since the show is a light comedy series that’s mostly focused on its main couple, it’s not concerned with creating extensive development for minor characters.

I don’t have much to say about the music and animation in Maid-sama!, since they’re both average, but I would like to comment on the ending. I did like how it gave us a sense that Misaki is finally starting to be honest with her feelings about Usui, but I didn’t like how abruptly it ended after that. If it wanted to go with this “return to the (slightly updated) status quo” ending, the rest of the characters, like Suzuna, Aoi, the girls at Maid Latte, the “idiot trio,” and even Hinata should have had their own little parting scene at the end (some of them didn’t even appear at all in the final episode). Without giving a nod to the rest of the characters before ending, it just seemed abrupt to me.

To summarize, despite following the typical shojo comedy storyline, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is fun nonetheless, with an entertaining main couple. The lack of emotional scenes and the insistent shojo-style animation and on-screen text could be annoying to some, but unique to others. I would recommend this series if you’re looking for simple, light, comical shojo fun that’s never too serious or emotional.

And as usual, since the original manga is still ongoing, we may see more Maid-sama! in future anime seasons.

“Usui on the other hand, is quite unique in my opinion, and I found him to be one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in a while.”

You dont read alot of shoujo, do you ? Usui is probably the biggest cliche in the series.

I wouldn’t say I’ve seen a ton of shojo series but I am familiar with quite a few. Most of the ones I know are older titles (Fushigi Yuugi, Utena, Rayearth, Fruits Basket, etc) though I have seen some new ones, like the ones mentioned in the post. I don’t recall seeing any character quite like Usui in any of them. I know his general character archetype is cliche, but to me he still seemed very unpredictable and interesting.

  2. Dragonliger says:

Well I’d say at the start it followed the manga chapter by chapter by perfection(adding some meaningless things but never losing stuff) but later went different to the manga and it only got to the half of what the manga had at the moment of the adaptation ¡Just half! so I think this won’t be the real conclusion and there will be a second season which will make more sense.

    • Yumeka says:

I’m always interested in hearing about the differences between the manga and anime of series (since I don’t read manga much). What part of the anime started to become different from the manga?

Well, guess that’s further evidence that we’ll probably see another season of Maid-sama! in the future (since I heard the manga series is actually quite popular).

  3. Glo says:

I’ve only seen half of this so far, but I really enjoyed the first 7 or so episodes, but then slowly this anime kind of died with me. One thing I really did like (and still do) is the art and animation. The anime iconography is awesome.

    • Yumeka says:

Heh, yes, the series does make full use of comedic anime iconography XD

If you didn’t like the first seven episodes, I would say don’t bother watching more, but since you did like them, perhaps you should give the series another try when you’re in a shojo comedy mood ;)

This is one of the few shojo series that I haven’t actually watched at all. I’ve read the first volume of the manga and was for some reason turned off by the characters.(I didn’t think it was the maid thing at all though). After reading your review I might try to get through maybe one or two episodes to see if I would enjoy it.

As for characters, Usui actually reminds me of the male lead(why can’t I remember names. >_<) in Dengaki Daisy and Misaki although I thought I would like her kind of character…I just didn't. I think it's because of the fact that Usui saves her all the time.

    • Yumeka says:

Give the series another try if you’d like. I think it’s the type of show that stays basically the same throughout all the episodes (no drastic changes in the story or characters), so you should be able to tell early on whether you’ll like it or not.

I’m not familiar with Dengaki Daisy but I do know that Usui is a familiar archetype for a male lead in a shojo series. But despite this, I personally find him amusing.

Another series that I didn’t about and thus didn’t watch. But your description of it matches my impressions of Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, which is of course a much more shonen-ish series. The light comedy, constant chibi-fication, heavy use of anime iconography, romantic triangle, a few emotionally poignant scenes, and of course the trap (Hideyoshi “But I’m a Boy” Kinoshita, hee hee hee) are all there. And there’s a second season coming soon too! Does the OP of Maid-sama stick in your head like “Perfect Area Complete”?

    • Yumeka says:

It is similar to Baka Test in those regards, but other than that, not so much. Baka Test is much more focused on the humor while Maid-sama! is mostly about the romance between the two characters, told in a light, comical way. Of course, the plots are way different too. But yes, the Maid-sama! OP is kind of catchy (not as much as “Perfect Area Complete” though =P) It did get stuck in my head a few times.

Honestly, i didn’t like how it was turning out in the second half..
Don’t get me wrong i enjoyed the show for sure and it was a good love story.. but my opinions of the main characters shifted greatly after about ep 14-15..Usui came off as a jealous a-hole to me who almost seemed like he had a, “you should love me because i said so,” thing going on; and misaki was playing baka every episode which really made me feel like they just weren’t meant to be.. Honestly if i had been writing it, i would have probably brought in hinata and elaborated on the competition, i was seriously upset and knew the show wasn’t going to end except in cliche. Seriously though… was i the only one who thought usui was just too creepy/clingy?

    • Yumeka says:

I agree that Usui was quite creepy at times, especially that one scene with him and Yukimura 0_o I still think he’s an interesting character, just a weird one XD

You have valid issues with the series. I guess I’m just not picky about those things, but they’re good points nonetheless.

  8. Soredemo says:

I didn’t care for the anime series like I care for the manga. It isn’t your run of the mill story, but it does use a lot of shoujo cliches, no doubt, but somehow it is refreshing. I found that the funny aspects of it and atmospheric music, take away from the main couple’s development and from the serious, more heart felt moments quite a bit in the animation version and it has been washed down considerably. In the manga you get the passionate feelings a lot more and it gets really quite sexy and emotional at times, but it is not tear jerker.

I agree Usui is a very interesting character and like someone says it reminds me of Kurosaki (from Dengeki Daisy), but he is more like a grown up version of Usui. He is not what you think, he comes across as lazy, cold and disinterested at the beginning, but as you get to know him, he definitely is reliable, dependable and a very warm, caring kind of guy. He teases a lot and has a goofy side and that makes him quite a funny character, but hides deep family problems as well.
Archetypes are always use, as well as certain cliches, but Usui never strikes me as such, nor he is a pushy, creepy guy in any way shape of form. His life circumstances make him a very lonely guy starved for affection (which I found really funny the anime team tried to resolve by giving him a kitty at one point XDD), but he is quite patient with Misaki, doesn’t push her beyond the reasonable (since she is such a tsundere), but cannot control his growing feelings for her. She fascinates him. Like anybody that has found the one true LOVE, it is natural to feel a bit jealous and scared of loosing that special person.

Misaki hasn’t made it clear at all if she likes him or not and Usui has been doing everything he has possible could to make her notice his feelings for her and the sudden appearance of another rooster in the coop that is receiving attention from her is bound to make poor Usui insecure and possessive, since he also suspects she does like him and her denial is also hurting him and is cruel, when he is pouring his heart out for her and showing such devotion. It was a moment of weakness Usui had, but things normalize in the future as things progress. He just wanted to make himself clear, wanted to show who is the most suited guy to be with her and he definitely settles it, when he shows up and gives up his shirt for her to not get cold, when Hinata carelessly and childishly gets her all wet and doesn’t act well enough in the situation.

Also Misaki is not saved by Usui all the time, he sure is there to help her and to support her (in the future she is also there for him too). It is a reciprocal relationship. She is capable most of the time of helping herself (like she shows when she gets kidnapped by those weirdos at one point in the maid cafe) and he shows up when she has already handled the situation. Being there for one another doesn’t make her a DID and it makes them a well rounded strong team suited for being with one another to face any adversities and it is not lacking in obstacles trying to challenge their relationship up ahead. It is not quite equal right now…

Anyway, this is getting a bit too long. I just wanted to clarify some things and if you have some time, you should check out the actual manga and the progression of things.
It is not a flawless manga and it is not without its weak points or flaws, but it does raise above the rest in many ways and it is a very enjoyable and full of passionate and sweet moments. I must say that the voice actors did a great job in the ending scene when you can feel the devotion on their voices, but it was a tiny bit downplayed for some reason and doesn’t quite live up to the manga scene counterpart… But it is definitely well executed and you can see how even Usui panics thinking he pushed too hard after seeing Misaki’s break down and backs off, but she is the one that finally shows interest. With her that is the only way to get a result and she knows it. If she wouldn’t like what Usui does, it wouldn’t have worked… But it does.

Give the manga a chance, so you can actually make a better assessment on the anime adaptation and the story as a whole at the end ^__^.
I hope this helped in any way :P . Thanks <3

I like the anime but I have one problems
They made Takumi and Misaki amazing and almost perfect but they made Takumi’s rival not even as half as good as him. Hinata is fun but he didn’t put much of a fight did he? To be honest I find this anime/manga predictable and as the story goes on it gets duller and duller.

    • teruteriyaki says:

if the rival for usui is at the same/higher level of usui, it would like others anime. but hinata is different, hinata is a reckless kawaii boy with fresh aura that worry everyone around him. he’s type of guy who will make a girl like misaki pay more attention to him. this tipe of guys could actually beat a boy like usui anytime with jealousy. but usui was trying his best to keep misaki to him. not to mention that our kaichou here has been in love to usui… maybe hinata came at the wrong time..

  11. marizka says:

im love anima cute anoreble and i have problem of animax boring……………..but… i like maid sama i cud by laugh ……….

  13. fatma says:

    kinda cute!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. teruteriyaki says:

usui is so cool! he’s mysterious, cool, genious, but childish at the same time. well, i like usui’s character, his lazyness make his character is not as heavy the main character in other anime. i dont like shoujo anime that make me think too much, but i dont like shoujo anime that’s sparkling too much either =.=”
i guess this Maid Sama! is perfect.. so refreshing, not so heavy and not so sparkling xD
    the graphic is good!!

  15. ItsawariYuki says:

I find it funny how the first few enormous comments point out the flaws with the show. I’m seeing a lot of comments about people hating Usui for being jealous. From a guy’s view point, I really enjoyed this series. Usui being a mysterious guy who is above average in everything is kind of hard to believe, but I know people in reality who are exactly like him: amazing at the most random things.

I digress, back to the jealously issue. If you devoted yourself to a girl, and your feelings are honestly for her, would you not feel jealous if another guy tries to take her away? I mean, be honest here, if people have enough egotism to say that they do not mind pouring their efforts out in order to help the one they love while another person tries to whisk that person away, then more power to them. I, for one, would be completely jealous. I’ve personally undergone such experiences, so I guess I know what it feels like. It’s hard to suppress your feelings.

Well, at least that’s just my viewpoint for Usui. Anyway, I thought the series was pretty well planned out. It can do without a few episodes though as they were pointless fillers. I can’t wait for a second season! Though this series is not the best, it was decent enough for me to watch it twice. (Which, I hardly do with any anime series). This is coming from a guy who have seen over 150 different series. I would recommend this for people who do not mind watching a chill/laid back series with a comedic touch. If you did not enjoy the episodes up to episode 6, I would not suggest continuing. But, keep in mind, once you start something, you might as well finish it, regardless of your feelings, because, you’ll never understand how things will end until you finish it with your own eyes.

    I give this series a 7/10.

I don’t get thesr people! This is THE best romance anime I’ve ever seen, I give it 100000/10 :> I don’t know what it takes to please people *taku … This anime will definitely have a season 2, considering it’s awsomeness + ending + credits (it showed glimpses of the future + usui’s mom?) anyway, from my point of view, I love this anime (espec. Usui xx) sooo much, I was depressed for weeks after season 1 ended and started having dreams about what would happen after (I won’t DARE watch the manga yet lol) … spoiling the anime, NO way :D I swear I’m going to Japan to search for Usuis XD seriously this is the only anime that’s had this effect on me…

when will the season 2 start??

  19. nikky_dbz says:

Maid-sama is surely an awesome anime. The manga might be loads better compared to the anime but that doesn’t matter. It is a fun anime to watch. I love both Usui’s and Misaki’s characters. Infact all the characters were fun to watch, be it the ‘idiot trio’ or the girls at Maid Latte or even the characters at school. I agree the ending was way too abrupt :( Hope there’s a second season coming out soon. It’s been really long since I have watched this anime again. Will start re-watching it soon :D And I just read someone’s post saying Usui’s character was creepy coz he started feeling jealous etc. I mean come on what’s wrong in feeling jealous if the person you love is with someone else? No big deal. And Misaki never really liked any guy or should I put it this way, she had no time to think about all that. But then she started liking Usui and yeah, nothing’s shown in this anime about their love till the ending but it’s obvious she likes him a lot and it’s just that she’s not able to accept it so soon. Just hope there’ll surely be another season where we could get to watch more of UsuixMisaki :D
