Continuing with my 12 moments of anime for 2009 (in order of significance to me personally), here’s #8:

Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #8: Pokemon Heart Gold & Soul Silver

I always enjoy all the new Pokemon games, but the announcement of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, updated remakes of the Game Boy Color games Gold and Silver, was especially exciting. I remember I first found out about HGSS back in May ’09 while randomly browsing the Internet during an anime club meeting at my university, and when I announced it to my friends in the room, we all cheered with geeky glee! XD The artists over on pixiv were quite excited about the HGSS games as well. I don’t think the fan base in general has shown this much excitement over new Pokemon games in a while. It’s gotta be the nostalgia from the old Gold and Silver games, something Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum don’t have. For most of the ex-Pokemon fans I’ve talked to, Gold and Silver seem to hold the fondest memories and they were usually the last games people played before they lost interest in Pokemon.

I’ve been a Pokemon fan since 1999 and have played all the games that have come out since then. I bought the Japanese version of Pearl but I decided to wait until the English versions of HGSS comes out so I can get the most out of it. I’ve heard nothing but good things about these games so I can’t wait for the U.S. release this coming March!

Always glad that I’m not the only one that’s SUPER PUMPED for this game. I think the G/S generation holds the best memories for a lot of folks because they LOVED the first set of games and the hype was very long and memorable leading into the second set. The number of cool things they added in G/S was really has yet to matched in any other release as well, since that’s the only game where you got to visit TWO islands.

I’m really happy the Pokemon franchise is still as strong as it is too. I was in Tokyo for two weeks very recently and visited the Pokemon Center there several times (and spent probably 75% of my spending budget there, wtf) and was pleased to see just as many adults mingled in with the kids, including a circle of salarymen standing together with their DSes getting the promo Pokemon from the Center. XD

Ah yes, I did forget to mention that Gold and Silver are the only games where you have to obtain 16 badges instead of the usual 8. I wonder if they’ll ever make a game where you have to get 32 badges on all four islands.

I recently went to the Pokemon Center in Tokyo as well. I think I was too busy looking at stuff to notice what kinds of people were there XD But wow, salarymen with DSs? Only in Japan.
