How many favorite anime have you gone through?

Anyone who’s been an anime fan for a number of years has probably experienced at least a few titles that really stood out to them in their personal fandom. Many anime have come and gone, some that I’ve especially loved, but there’s only a select few that were able to claim a place as my favorite for any amount of time…

This isn’t a favorites list; rather, it’s a look back at the seven anime out of the two-hundred+ that I’ve seen which I would have called my favorite during the time I was into them. These are series that I didn’t just love – I became obsessed with them.

The below list of my seven anime obsessions is mostly in chronological order (some of them overlap). Most of these were touched on in My Anime Autobiography.

Pokemon
Years of my obsession: 1999 to 2001

Pokemon is what got me interested in anime, and for roughly three years, I was completely obsessed. I played all the games, watched and recorded all the TV episodes, saw all the movies in the theater, collected the trading cards and many other merchandise, drew pictures of pokemon all the time, and went to local Pokemon Leagues at various shopping centers. The franchise was literally everything to me back then.

Nowadays, I’m still very much a Pokemon fan, but my obsession isn’t what it used to be. I stopped collecting the cards a number of years ago, and the amount of Pokemon stuff I buy has been limited to make room for other anime merchandise. I stopped watching the dub of the anime a few years ago, but I continue to watch the episodes and movies in Japanese online. The main part of the franchise I’m still a hardcore fan of is the games.

Mon Colle Knights
Years of my obsession: 2001 to 2002

Mon Colle Knights is probably the least intense of my anime obsessions. The reason I have it on the list is because I did truly get into it at one point. I didn’t just watch and enjoy the (terribly rewritten) dub – I actively searched all around for Mon Colle Knights web sites (which were very few) and I even bought this device for my old iMac so I could take screencaps and videos for the Mon Colle Knights episodes I taped on VHS. And because VHS/DVDs of the series were never released in English, I recorded my own tapes of the dubbed episodes and I even bought one of the Japanese VHS volumes and R2 DVDs of the ending episodes and 30-minute movie. I never bought raw Japanese episodes for any series besides one VHS for Pokemon, so I guess I really wanted to see more Mon Colle Knights!

To most people, Mon Colle Knights was just another dispensable monster-collecting kid show meant to emulate Pokemon. But for some reason, I really liked it. It had cool and cute monsters, pretty character designs, an adorable romance going on between the two main characters, genuinely funny humor, and the most hilarious villains. It had great opening songs too, which are still among my favorite j-pop tunes.

Tenchi Muyo!
Years of my obsession: 2001 to 2003

Back in the day when Tenchi was a popular series on Toonami/Adult Swim, I absolutely adored it. It was one of the first really character-driven anime I’d seen and I just loved the characters so much. I didn’t have cable back then so I got my first look at Tenchi through tapes from a friend. I got so hooked that I bought all the DVDs – the original OVAs, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, the movies, and the Pretty Sammy spin-off series. I watched them many times dubbed and subbed. Since I don’t enjoy reading manga as much as watching anime, you can tell I really like a series if I’m diligent with reading the manga. During my years of Tenchi obsession, I not only read but diligently bought the manga volumes as they were released by Viz. Despite not being very computer savvy back in the day, I put together a pretty big collection of Tenchi images on my computer and wrote a 30+ page long Tenchi fanfic.

As my Tenchi obsession started to wane, I ended up selling my DVDs of the TV series and movies because my main love for the franchise was in the OVAs and manga. But since the OVA remained incomplete for many years, I eventually lost interest in that as well (stopped collecting the manga, too). By the time I found out about the long awaited sequel to the OVA in 2005, I didn’t have any motivation to check it out. I still like Tenchi though and maybe one of these days I should try to get back into it.

Evangelion
Years of my obsession: 2003 to 2004

My Evangelion obsession occurred simultaneously with my Tenchi and Inuyasha obsession, however it ended up being the shortest of the three. Like many new fans who watch Evangelion for the first time, I was completely blown away. I watched my DVDs of the series a bunch of times, dubbed and subbed, and eventually bought the movies and director’s-cut DVDs, too. I just couldn’t get over the brilliance and ingenuity of the series. I spent many hours looking online and absorbing information about the story and characters, especially interpretations of the ending. The same summer I wrote my Tenchi fanfic, I wrote a long Evangelion fanfic too, which I’m still pretty proud of.

At one point I couldn’t choose between Evangelion, Inuyasha, or Tenchi as my favorite anime, but my Eva obsession cooled off before the other two. I guess since the series wasn’t ongoing, I eventually got over my initial amazement. I still consider it amongst my favorites and I’m still keeping up with it through the new movies.

Inuyasha
Years of my obsession: 2002 to 2007

So far, Inuyasha has been the longest lasting of my anime obsessions, spanning five of my ten years as an anime fan. I just love the characters, and the seemingly never-ending story always kept me begging for more. I accidentally bought bootleg DVDs before starting to buy the official ones (never finished my collection though). I watched all the dubbed episodes on Adult Swim as well as fansubs, bought a lot of Inuyasha merchandise over the years, and did more work on the Inuyasha section of my site than any other. Inuyasha is also the only long-running series where I’ve read all 558 chapters of the manga and seen all 4 movies and 193 anime episodes (167 for the first series and 26 for the last). A day didn’t go by in those five years where Inuyasha wasn’t on my mind.

I was so into Inuyasha that I never thought I would lose interest in it. But it finally started to happen when the quality of the manga began to decline in the later chapters. Even though I’m not obsessed with it anymore, I still like it very much and it will always be special to me.

Kannagi
Years of my obsession: 2008 to 2009

Kannagi was the shortest of my anime obsessions, lasting only a few months in the end of ’08 and the beginning of ’09. I didn’t start watching it until the second to last episode aired. I loved it so much that I plowed through the 12 episodes in just a couple of days. On the day episode 13 was to come out, I was so impatient for the fansub that I kept refreshing Tokyo Toshokan literally every few minutes. When the anime finished, I jumped right to scanlations of the manga. At that time, only volumes 1 through 3 had been translated. But I just couldn’t wait and ended up reading volumes 4 though 6 raw. As I stated before, I’m pretty lazy when it comes to reading manga, so the fact that I not only quickly read through the Kannagi manga, but read it raw, means I really loved it! I eventually read the scanlations of volumes 4 through 6 when they came out.

My obsession with it cooled down before too long, but if the manga ever resumes (it’s been on hiatus for a couple of years now) or a new anime is made, I’ll get back into it!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Years of my obsession: 2007 to present

Haruhi is currently my favorite, and along with Pokemon and Inuyasha, has been one of my biggest obsessions. I actually didn’t like it that much when I first watched the series in late ’06. However, the Haruhi promotion going on at AX 2007 is what changed my mind about it and made me decide to watch it again. I ended up loving it the second time around. Since then, I’ve watched all 28 episodes a few times, read all the novels at least twice, have been buying the English releases of the DVDs and novels, and have over 1GB worth of Haruhi pictures on my computer. I’m slowly building a collection of Haruhi merchandise, but I have a ways to go.

It’s hard to say when/if another anime will rise up and replace Haruhi as my favorite. Not knowing when I’ll discover a new favorite anime is part of the fun of the fandom!

—–

It’s weird that only seven out of the two-hundred+ anime I’ve seen have been able to steal my heart. Besides these seven, a few others such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Slayers, and Lucky Star came close, but I didn’t get quite into them enough to put them on the list. I’ve gone through many of the anime that other fans were obsessed with at one time, such as Naruto, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass. But though I loved these, I never got that into them.

If you’ve also gone through any number of favorite anime over the years, I’d love to hear about them. More or less than the amount I have? Same amount of obsession?

I think my two biggest obsessions would have to be Sailor Moon and Tsubasa (moreso the manga than the anime). Sailor Moon was my gateway anime and I buy up anything Tsubasa that I see at conventions/online.

It’s funny how something can take over our lives yet when something new comes along it sits on the back burner. XD But as long as you look back on it with fond memories it was worth it.

Now you’ll have to excuse me as I must get back to Pokemon SoulSilver. XD

  2. Yumeka says:

    @ Christina

Even though Sailor Moon was the first anime I ever saw back in 1995, I never became a huge fan. Pokemon was the franchise that first made me aware of anime around 1999/2000.

And that reminds me that I should post my second review of Heart Gold and Soul Silver sometime soon.

  3. Topspin says:

I’ve have numerous “smaller obsessions” but nothing that has lasted a year at a time :) I consider anything I’ve rewatched/reread more than a couple times long after initially watching them an obsession if I can pick it up anytime and enjoy it.

My obsessions have ranged from Spice and Wolf to the Read or Die OVA and Gunnm manga. I even count myself “obsessed” with a few guilty pleasures like the Karin manga, Nuku Nuku, or Ninja Scroll.. things that I normally wouldn’t like but still draw me in for no apparent reason.

There are, however, a number of anime tunes that I literally am obsessed with and won’t leave my playlist. They’re often insipid tracks I would not listen to if they were English.. I’ve often wondered why I can stand them better in Japanese or Engrish.

  4. Yumeka says:

    @ Topspin

Yeah, I’ve had a lot of “smaller obsessions” too, like the ones I mentioned in the second to last paragraph of the post. But I only listed the seven most major ones here, generally the ones that lasted the longest. A sign that I’m getting really into a series is if I actively indulge in other parts of it besides just the anime, i.e., manga, novels, fanfics, buying lots of merchandise, etc., and if I have the urge to watch the series more than once.

There are a number of anime songs I’ve loved since the beginning of my fandom that I still listen to frequently today. I don’t think there’s any song I’m obsessed with though (at least I don’t listen to them everyday).

  5. Prooof says:

I never really obsessed over anime (there are too many series to watch, no time to stick around the same ones :P)
I usually delete anime off my hard drive as soon as I finish watching it
    exceptions
lucky star, I have randomly watched all the episodes about 3-4 times approx
haruhi suzumiya, I think I have watched the first season twice
clannad, playing visual novel and watching anime and reading manga
just for spring season this year I have about 12 series to go through, so no time to bother with older ones

  6. keikakudoori says:

I wouldn’t say obsessed but I was very much into DB and other older shounen shows when I was small. Ok, I suppose that buying cards, manga, and considering skipping school, etc would fall in that category. I may have a different idea of them since I’m not into shounen that much now, however, I remember the shows I liked way back then as fond memories because those shows were the first that opened the door what came next. Even some of those shows were the foundation to what we now watch.

As for the rest.. mainly they are shows that left a big impact after I finished watching them. Unlike the first ones these are more recent ones such Gungrave, Gankutsuou, FMP!, and FMA (the old one). Heck, at some point I even sang along with the OPs and ED’s. After that current favorite top 3 anime since 2006 are Code Geass, Higurashi, and The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I’ve already bought some merchandise and even planned on getting some games so yeah, they are as close as being obsessed as I can get. With all ups and downs in recent years they are still my favorite and not showing any signs of leaving my top three list for many years to come.

  7. Game8910 says:

My first anime obession was back when I was around 5-7 years old and it was actually a dual obsession with Dragon Ball with Saint Seiya. Couple years later my new favourite anime became Digimon (with a bit of Pokemon) when I was around 7-12. But when I was 11 I watched Cardcaptor Sakura and it became with all time fav anime from the time I was 11 until I was 17. Granted, I stopped watching anime when I was 12 until I turned 17 and decided to re-watch CCS.

After I got back into anime, I stumbled upon 2 series that just got me hooked and could no longer escape their clutches. And they were the Haruhi Suzumiya series and Shakugan no Shana. From 2007 and present anything related to those 2 series will catch my interest. I bought their novels as well….on 2008 however 1 title although not an obession as much as the previous did manage to become my all time favourite show, and that is the Aria series. I ended up buying their manga/DVDs

  8. arta21 says:

My first anime was Sailor Moon. I just adored that anime – I had drawing of Sailor Scouts everywhere in my room. The latest biggest hit for me was Inuyasha. And recently I saw Lovely Complex and just fell in love.

  9. Haven’t had as many or as strong obsessions over series as you have, but that’s likely due to me spreading out my anime interests quite a bit. But there are two that have kept held my interest almost constantly over the years. UC Gundam is one of them, starting off from first watching the original series and the pre-Zeta sidestories on Adult Swim back in middle/high school. Moving on later to Zeta and other sidestories, and now I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of vol 9 of the Ecole du Ciel manga since I can’t get enough of it. Models, speculation in blog posts, all kinds of stuff.

The other is Honey and Clover. The story, characters, and art/sound direction are so near and dear to my heart that it has become a part of me in some ways. The first thing I went out to buy when I started my year abroad in Japan was the manga (and then the anime and manga fan guides), and once vol 10 comes out in English I’ll have a complete set of both language versions of it. I’ve rewatched it probably four times now, 3 of those times with friends of mine that I’ve shared the experience with and converted to the True Path of H&C, hehe.

I really hope the Kannagi hiatus isn’t because of all the stupid 2-chan RAEG when she revealed that Nagi might have had a boyfriend in the past. Finding out about that fan reaction was truly one of those ‘faith in humanity: lost’ moments. The show was so much fun.

  10. Yokihana says:

I’ve had a couple of anime that I’ve really been into/obessed with. The first one was Pokemon which lasted a while and while I still like it, it’s not quite the same. I think the next big one was Inu-yasha and my senior year of high school I discovered Fruits basket. I also have periods where I’ll get really into Dragonballz.

  11. Yumeka says:

    @ keikakudoori

I never got into DB and I can say pretty certainly that the reason is because I didn’t have cable TV back then and wasn’t able to watch it when it was really popular. Since most of the time I end up loving all the majorly popular series, I’m sure I would have been into it at the time if I had access to it.

Nice top 3. The fact that they’ve remained your favorites for a few years means that they’ll probably always be special to you even if you do eventually lose interest.

    @ Game8910

Sounds like you were more of a Digimon person than a Pokemon person. I loved both, but as I said in the post, Pokemon was huge for me. I was into Digimon but never obsessed with it. But I recently watched fansubs of the first one and half seasons and I’m looking forward to the upcoming new series, so I guess I still like it ^^,,,

I was 14 when I first got into Cardcaptor Sakura (started by watching the terrible Kids’ WB dub before buying the uncut VHS/DVD). It almost became an obsession but it never did get close to replacing Pokemon at the time. Still among my top 10 favorites though.

    @ arta21

Always nice to know another Inuyasha fan, and a fan whose first anime was also Sailor Moon =) Even though SM was my first, I didn’t know about anime back then and never got that into it. I’ve only seen random episodes out of order – maybe if I actually watched the entire 200 episode series in order I would like it more.

    @ ExecutiveOtaku

I heard that about Kannagi but I think the main reason it’s been on hiatus is because of the health of the manga-ka. A couple of times she’s made announcements that she intends to finish it, so hopefully it won’t be too long. But they have enough manga material for another 13 episode anime season in the meantime.

    @ Yokihana

Sounds like we were both big on Pokemon and Inuyasha. I’m still very big on Pokemon (the games at least). Not so much Inuyasha anymore but I still love it. Coincidentally, I got into Fruits Basket my senior year of high school, too. Never was a major fan but I would like to read the whole manga series one of these days.

  12. Like many people, my first exposure to anime was the Sailor Moon series. I enjoyed it, but never really got absorbed into it. That would be where the Pokemon anime got me (never got past Yellow due to dislike of the RPG genre). I saw bits and pieces of others and briefly became fans of Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but as for seeing the real Japanese equivilant, that would be of course, Haruhi.

I had exhausted my tokusatsu supply at the time and heard good things about Haruhi so I gave it a shot. After the baseball episode, I was hooked. I found that the show was being released in R1, so I got the limited editions to have the broadcast order (really silly in retrospect now). Fullmetal Alchemist was good, but had something intangible missing. I tried an episode or two of Kanon (2006), and some of Romeo x Juliet, but neither stayed with me, so I kept with the tokusatsu.

I always kept an eye out for Haruhi and last year it paid off. I had just finished a course analyzing Japanese literature and that helped me look at anime in different ways. After Haruhi, I kept up with Nyan Koi, which I like enough to get a R1 release and tried Bakemonogatari. I’m not a fan of the art style, but the characters and the plot made up for it. As you know I just finished Railgun and I’m in the process of getting a BD drive to review the BDs of it, just trying to decide if the extra DVDs are worth getting.

I’m playing a bit of catch up with good series that I may have missed or been turned away from due to internet shounen action show biases.

  13. Dragonliger says:

Mon colle knights are great! i wish I could get the series.

  14. Fabrice says:

    I have too many favorites.
Its hard to say a top 10 at least for me =/
but for sure i like Shuffle! Haruhi, Kimi ni todoke, Gurren Lagann, Clannad, Spice and Wolf, k-on, gintama, wtf lol my list will go on and on.

  15. Yumeka says:

    @ ultimatemegax

Ah, you only made it to Pokemon Yellow? Most ex-Pokemon players usually stopped at Gold and Silver. But if you don’t like RPG games, then I can see why.

Just curious as to what made you decide to watch Nyan Koi! of all anime (Bakemonogatari and Railgun I can understand since those became very popular).

    @ Dragonliger

It’s too bad Mon Colle Knights never had a DVD release outside Japan. Maybe it’ll get a sudden revival through online streaming, but I doubt it since it was one of the least popular monster anime during its time.

    @ Fabrice

Yeah, sometimes it’s hard to pick, but I’m not exactly talking about favorites – only series that you became really into and obsessed with at one point (they don’t necessarily have to be your favorites anymore). Out of those you listed, do you feel like you are (or were) equally obsessed with them or some more than others?

  16. I’m really shocked I got all 150 on a save file for Blue given that I hate grinding in RPGs.

I saw screen captures with talking cats being sarcastic and said “I’ve got to see this show” and started following it every week. If it wasn’t for Railgun completely amazing me with the artwork and characters, I’d be getting the BDs, but I’ve got enough trying to save some money for my trip. I can’t wait to get those discs, but finding the Vol. 1 limited edition set with extra disc is being a challenge to my wallet, but it’ll be worth it.

  17. Jan Suzukawa says:

Hmm, I was just thinking about doing a post about the anime series I’ve had obsessions with… ;) Am just emerging from a trip out of town and two work deadlines… my blog is calling to me…

  18. Canne says:

I can never be obsessed with any particular anime for longer than a few months so I’m surprised to see your obsession lasts so long for each title. Maybe that explains the lack of real relationship in my life O_o

  19. Jesus says:

My eternal obsession is Haruhi XD. The others are K-ON!, Inuyasha, Sakura Card Captors, Digimon, Full Metal Alchemist, Blood+ and Umineko/Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni

  20. Alan says:

There’s only two anime that I’ve been obsessed with, and you have them both on your list. Tenchi Muyo and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. I haven’t watched many (probably around 10) but those two stand out by far. I’m still obsessed with Haruhi. You know you’re obsessed when you actually visit the area where you can see many of the places in the anime.

Kyon’s walk to school is very real and dead-on.

  21. Yumeka says:

    @ Alan

If you intend to watch more than those 10 anime, I’m sure you’ll find lots of others to become obsessed with. That’s one of the great things about the fandom – you never know when a new favorite will pop up =)

That’s great that you got to visit the real location that the Haruhi series takes place in. I assume you live in Japan or at least visited.

  22. Luna says:

The first anime I got really into was Pokemon when my parents brought me all the tapes when I was six, after the I was all about pokemon (I had the figures, the cards, stuff animals, even a comforter) and I would watch my tapes over and over until my parents got sick of them! Ironically enough I never I never knew it was a game until I was in high school I just knew the tv show, I got out of pokemon when I was in fourth grade or so cause I got into other things like boys and friends ;D
My next obession was Sailor Moon which I got into a little after pokemon, I bought a vhs of it at a garage sale and watch it so many times and used to play sailor scouts with my friends at school (I was always Sailor Venus)
I kinda got out of it after tht until Tokyo Mew New came out on tv when I was in third/fourth grade and I used to wake up every Saturday to watch it and it was also the first manga I read cause of how much i loved it! I still owe the first two volumes I bought at age 11!

Got out of anime when I hit 5th grade and middle school but fell in love when I borrow a girl from camps Volume of vampire knight after tht i quickly brought the first three volumes and eventually found out there was a anime of it! I also got into Fruits Basket and read it obsessively during freshmen year and watch the anime after those it was Death Note and then Hetalia for the longest of time (though Im still pretty into it) along with a few mini obsessions (Bleach, Ouran, Soul Eater) right now I’m into Junjou Romantica, Durarara!!, Attack On Titan, Hetalia and a few others, though it is interesting how your tastes changeas you grow, I know my fifteen year old self would NEVER watch something gorey like AOT or something evolving the love between two men like Junjou!
