My 100 favorite anime characters (80 – 71)

Continuing the countdown of my 100 favorite anime characters, here are characters 80 to 71…

80. Miu Matsuoka (from Ichigo Mashimaro)

Seiyuu: Fumiko Orikasa

Almost all the humor in Ichigo Mashimaro comes from Miu’s mischief. Her little pranks and jokes, and the affect they have on the other characters, are simply hilarious. She just does the most randomly amusing things. If I had to hang out with her in real life, she’d probably get on my nerves. But just watching her, she is truly a funny kid.

79. Setsuna F. Seiei (from Gundam 00)

Seiyuu: Mamoru Miyano

Behind his seemingly stoic personality, Setsuna has a strong sense of honor and wisdom. At first he appears to be an unsociable emo type, but over the course of the series, instead of lamenting about his own troubled past, he makes known his strong ideas of justice and his desire for world peace.

———-

78. Hitagi Senjougahara (from Bakemonogatari)

Seiyuu: Chiwa Saito

I wasn’t sure what to think of Hitagi at first, but after watching more of Bakemonogatari (especially episode 12), she’s grown on me. Her subtly cynical remarks, as well as her own admirable self-analysis of her relationship with Koyomi, is endlessly entertaining.

———-

77. Reiji “Zwei” Azuma (from Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~)

Seiyuu: Miyu Irino

Despite being plagued with amnesia and thrust into a dangerous world he knows nothing about, Reiji remains kind and gentle. Even when he becomes the deadly Phantom himself, he does not try to cast away his kindness but instead tries to balance his assassin ideals with his human emotions of loss, fear, and love.

———-

76. Elen “Ein” (from Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~)

Seiyuu: Ayahi Takagaki

Elen goes from blind, unquestioning loyalty to Scythe Master, to a desire to be free and uncover her past, just by her bond with Reiji. She can easily shift from cheerful schoolgirl facade to hardened, emotionless assassin. But her emotions are definitely there. Without having to be lovey-dovey nor adamantly in denial, her bond with Reiji is strong.

———-

75. Saya Otonashi (from Blood+)

Seiyuu: Eri Kitamura

Saya is one character I feel the saddest for. She starts out with no memories, she’s torn away from her family, a couple of her family members are killed, and the huge burden of fighting Chiropterans is laid on her shoulders. And yet, she doesn’t whine or lash out at anyone; she’s simply sad. She hardly ever smiled at all in the 50 episodes of Blood+. But eventually she’s able to come out of self-pity and become a determined warrior.

———-

74. Miroku (from Inuyasha)

Seiyuu: Kouji Tsujitani

Miroku’s main fault is being a “lecherous monk.” But other than that, he’s chivalrous, brave, intelligent, and usually very emotionally stable. His one-track mind for women is the source of good humor, but he definitely knows when it’s time to be serious, such as fighting Naraku or protecting Sango.

———-

73. Kojirou “James” (from Pokemon)

Seiyuu: Shinichiro Miki

Kojirou (a.k.a. James) and below, #72 Musashi (a.k.a. Jessie) hold a lot of sentimental value to me. Back in my early years of anime fandom, when I was only familiar with a few other series besides Pokemon, they were my first favorite characters, my first OTP, and the first characters I actively sought fan art and fanfics for. I’m still a big Pokemon fan and I still continue to watch the anime. After seeing these two in 600+ episodes, 10+ movies, and numerous specials, and noting all their moments of anger, sadness, mischief, sympathy, sentiment, and tons of other emotions, how could I not stay attached to them? I think many would agree that they’re more well developed and entertaining than Pokemon’s main protagonists.

Kojirou is a sweet guy, but I think I like Musashi a little bit better because of her wild, extravagant personality, and the fact that she’s voiced by the talented Megumi Hayashibara.

And an FYI, Team Rocket had their own dance long before Hare Hare Yukai was invented:

72. Musashi “Jessie” (from Pokemon)

Seiyuu: Megumi Hayashibara

*see my above description for #73 Kojirou*

———-

71. Itsuki Koizumi (from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Seiyuu: Daisuke Ono

Itsuki seems like a forever smiling nice guy whose mostly good at spouting out information and plot developments when necessary. But after having perused the Haruhi novels, I feel that behind his cheerful facade, he’s slightly jealous of Kyon’s status in relation to the turmoil surrounding Haruhi. He likes Kyon (how you interpret “like” is up to you) but he also wishes he was the one to whom Haruhi’s power centers around. He doesn’t want to upset anyone about this of course, so he keeps up his happy, smiling personality, only vaguely revealing his feelings to Kyon when the time is right. He’s an interesting guy if you look closely.

  1. Saere says:

Pokemon is one of those things I will forever love and remember fondly, no matter how old I grow. Jessie and James are two amazing, hilarious characters.

And ooh, Saya! I’m curious to see if Haji will be somewhere higher on the list. (I still swear that he’s the true inspiration for the Phantom of the Opera. He must have somehow left an impression on Gaston Leroux during one of his nightly walks in Paris.)

  2. pKjd says:

But, there would never be a dull moment with Miu around~ Plus the girl can drop some mad skillz http://bit.ly/4vYwpx

Nice to see her on your countdown :P

  3. digitalboy says:

Saya is a very nice character, so I’m happy to see her getting some love. ROFL at Jessie and James, they truly are amazing.

  4. Silver says:

Same thing for me about Pokemon. Even after watching hundreds of series, I still love Pokemon and continue to watch them. The only problem with Pokemon for me is that I don’t really have any specific favorite characters as I really love them all. It’s a series that I would love to be in too.
