Because he inherited his gangster father's intimidating appearance, gentle and clean high school student Ryuuji Takasu believes that his chances of getting a girlfriend are pretty slim, especially with the one particular girl he has a crush on, Minori Kushieda. However, one day he accidentally bumps into Taiga Aisaka, who is infamously known as the "Palmtop Tiger" by her classmates. Despite her small size, Taiga has a ferocious temper and a hopelessly negative attitude, which Ryuuji witnesses first hand. But he eventually finds out that Taiga also has a secret - she has a major crush on Ryuuji's best friend, Yuusaku Kitamura. Since Minori is Taiga's best friend, she makes a deal with Ryuuji; if he helps her get closer to Yuusaku (and act as her "servant" whenever she feels like it), she will help him get closer to Minori.
It doesn't take long before Ryuuji discovers that, quite coincidentally, Taiga's home is only a few feet away from the apartment where he lives with his carefree and often hungover mother Yasuko, and pet parakeet Inko. Because of this, Taiga and Ryuuji begin to see a lot of each other, with Ryuuji doing most of the cooking and cleaning for both of them since Taiga, who is strangely living all by herself, is hopeless when it comes to those kinds of things. But as they continue to spend time together, Ryuuji starts to see a troubled and sympathetic side to Taiga that is quite unknown to most of her classmates. As she warms up to him, he starts to see how her foul temper is really a mask for the pain she feels from a dysfunctional family life. The two eventually spend so much time together that their classmates start to think that they've become a couple.
As time goes on, Ryuuji and Taiga help each other get to know their respective crushes, Minori and Yuusaku. However, their relationships become a bit shaky when famous model Ami Kawashima ends up in their class and seems to have ulterior motives involving Ryuuji. But eventually, as Ryuuji, Taiga, Minori, Yuusaku, and Ami get to know each other better and become good friends, they face many frustrations, misunderstandings, and heartbreaks as they try to discover with whom their true feelings lie.
