After Brock went to stay with Prof. Ivy for a while, Ash and Misty decided to travel around the Orange Islands. They met Tracey when he helped them save a Lapras on Tangelo Island. Tracey told them that he was a pokemon watcher - someone who travels around observing pokemon as well as drawing them. When Tracey found out that Ash and Misty knew the renowned pokemon researcher Prof. Oak, he joined them on their Orange Island journey in hopes that he'd get to meet the professor.
Tracey loves to draw pokemon, but he sometimes likes to draw pretty girls as well(though he's not nearly as girl-crazed as Brock.) He's more quieter and level-headed than Ash and Misty, and he practically never loses his temper to anything. Once he met Prof. Oak in Pallet Town, the professor let him stay and help with his research.
