Gary is Prof. Oak's grandson, and he started his pokemon journey from Pallet Town the same day that Ash did. When Ash and Gary first met, they became rivals, competing to see who'll become the better pokemon trainer. In the beginning of the series, Gary traveled around with a squad of his own cheerleaders, and he had a snobby, self-centered attitude. But in later episodes, he loses the cheerleaders and he becomes much more friendly and considerate.
Ash, Misty, and Brock ran into Gary every now and then. Ash would always want to battle him, but Gary usually declined. They finally had a major battle with each other in the Johto League, and much to everyone's surprise, Ash's Charizard beat Gary's Blastoise. After the battle, Gary and Ash gained a new respect for each other and, after much contemplation, Gary eventually decided to become a pokemon researcher like his grandfather.
