Haruhi Suzumiya: masterpiece, piece of junk or simply overrated?

This is the “Question of the Week” for the Hey, Answerman column on Anime News Network. I usually don’t have the time or motivation to submit my own answers to things like this. But…since I’m on vacation now and I was kinda bored today, I decided to give this question a try. I’ve been rather Haruhi-obsessed this past year so I probably could’ve written a lot more than this but I didn’t want to overdo it XD Hopefully Zac will post my response, and if not, at least I used it as a blog post so it wasn’t a total waste ^^a You can check ANN next week to see other answers to the question. Anyway, here’s my (kinda long) answer…

Anime is a luxury…

I could’ve used this money to pay off my debts…

From what I’ve seen during my years of anime fandom, there are generally two kinds of fans; those who mostly watch their anime by buying the official DVDs and those who mostly watch their anime via fansubs. Putting the limited amount of anime aired on English TV aside, DVDs and fansubs are really the only other sources for watching anime. But I’ve noticed that some fans who are dedicated to buying the official DVDs (and may also have morals which put them against downloading fansubs) have a poor respect and think little of fans who only download fansubs and don’t support the anime market by buying the DVDs. Since I’m one of those fans who watches almost all my anime via fansubs, I want to point out the main reason why I do so and don’t buy the DVDs when they come out; I’d like to buy them, but I simply can’t afford it…

The end of Death Note – where does the evil truly lie?

Death Note
I’m kind of late in writing my thoughts on the end of Death Note…I know everyone’s blogged about it already and even though my thoughts about the series haven’t changed very much since my halfway mark review of it, I just had to give my personal input about the ending of this amazing series…

Is anime deep or just entertainment (or both)?

Wolf's Rain
Since this interesting topic has come up on Anime Nano, I felt like putting my thoughts in too. The debate of whether “anime is deep or just entertainment” is a complex one. What is “deep” and what is “entertaining” can have different meanings to different people. But from what I’ve seen, and from what most people would define as “deep” and “entertaining,” I believe that some anime try to evoke a sense of depth in their audience while some are pretty much only focused on the entertainment factor. The term “anime” covers too wide a range of genres, stories, and perspectives to have just one adjective (“deep” or “entertaining” in this case) to describe the entire entity. It’s like saying “movies are deep/entertaining” or “books are deep/entertaining”; the word encompasses too many themes to narrow it down to such a broad description. There are so many different anime series, saying that “anime” in general is such and such is just too vague…

More thoughts on Bleach…

This is sort of a follow-up to my old post, “Bleach review: an overrated shounen anime.” I had written that review after seeing 100 episodes of Bleach (in the middle of the Bounto arc) and now I’ve seen 126 episodes. My thoughts about the series haven’t changed that much after 26 episodes, even with the new Vizard/Arrancar arc, but they have changed a bit so I thought I’d expand a little on my previous Bleach review. I’m not gonna repeat the things I said in the old review, but I will talk about any new opinions I have…

Gaara: ultimate anime “tragic past”

As of now, the Naruto dub on CN just finished airing episodes 76 and 77, the episodes that delve deep into Gaara’s past. It’s been at least a year since I last watched these episodes fansubbed, and after re-watching them on CN, I have to say that I honestly think Gaara has the most tragic and well-developed past of any anime character I’ve ever known…

YouTube, fansubs, and other “copyright infringements”

The whole issue about YouTube and its copyright infringement policies has always been a big topic among anime fans, and now even more so because of Google taking over YouTube. I don’t know too much about this kind of stuff, but from what I do know and have experienced from having my own YouTube account, I can say that YouTube, or rather the anime companies that enforce these copyright infringement polices, are taking things a little too far…

The deterioration of American animation(another reason why anime is great)

As you can probably tell from the title of this post, I’ve been very upset about the direction American animated movies and TV shows have been headed in recent years. Just so you know where I’m coming from, I’m not just an anime fan but also a fan of animation in general, though anime is my favorite form of the medium. I grew up with Disney movies and loved them dearly, as well as the other old cartoons I used to watch. I’ve always preferred animation over live-action even as I grew older, then I discovered anime, which is obviously the most diverse form of animation there is. But for the many years that I’ve been an anime fan, I couldn’t help but notice how the quality of American animation has decreased since my childhood days. By “quality” I don’t mean the actual picture/sound quality, but the quality of the stories. It’s something that’s been on my mind for a long time, so I’m finally going to take the time to make all my thoughts about it heard. This post is mostly about why I feel American animation(emphasis on Disney) has declined so much in recent years, and also how it compares to anime and why I feel anime is more superior.

An Anime Fan: the odd one out

This is actually a topic that has been on my mind since I became an anime fan, I just never got around to writing about it. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way, so I would love to hear other anime fans’ comments about this…

Inuyasha: why there should be a new TV series

With Inuyasha being my most favorite series of all, this is something that’s been on my mind for a while now. And now that all the episodes have aired on Adult Swim, I feel even more obliged to get my point across…
