Sasami-san@Ganbaranai and Kotoura-san reviews

The spring ’13 season of anime has just started so I’m trying my best to get through the remainder of my seasonal reviews. These will probably be the last two, but we shall see…

Sasami-san@Ganbaranai

After completing this series…well, really around the 3/4 mark, all I could think of was that this is the most convoluted anime I have ever seen. It’s a shame because I actually enjoyed the first half of the show despite my aversion to “weird” anime. But by the last few episodes, I could certainly no longer call it a good anime. To illustrate exactly what went wrong with Sasami-san for me, it would help to briefly discuss all the episodes. Like I said in my first impressions review, even though episode 1 was rather bizarre, I still kinda liked it. And once episode 2 came along and explained the reason behind the events of episode 1 – the whole thing with Amaterasu – I actually got pretty interested. A plot where Sasami and her brother unwittingly put the world in danger because they possess the powers of Amaterasu, and the three Yagami sisters have to keep that in check, sounded like a fun idea…not too unlike Haruhi’s plot actually. If the show had continued with this premise throughout the episodes I probably would have liked it a lot better and I’m sure Shaft could have gotten really creative with it, like the chocolate thing in episode 1. But instead they decided to keep cramming needlessly bizarre and complicated subplots in such a short series, and late in the series too. But I digress, episode 3 developed the plot and characters more and ended on such a resolute note that it seemed like it could have been the final episode (and I kinda wish it was). Episode 4 about the sarcoma was a little weird and episode 5 took a rather jarringly dramatic turn compared to the previous episodes. But still, they fleshed out the characters and mechanics of the show’s world a bit more so it was fine.

Episode 6, which began the arc with Sasami’s mother Juju, is when things take a turn for the worse. This episode was mostly okay as the idea of Juju wanting Sasami to return to her shrine maiden duties was plausible, and their interactions were kind of funny. I could even tolerate how ridiculously dramatic and graphic the ending of this episode and most of episode 7 was…but the whole thing with the golem, and the nine-tailed fox, and this Arahabaki group that pop out of nowhere, and Tsurugi getting trapped in the underworld then suddenly coming back, and going back in time to change Sasami and Juju’s fate…it was so much to digest in just episodes 7-9 and felt needlessly complicated. The plot was just all over the place at that point, and with only three episodes left, I couldn’t figure out what they were going for now that they introduced this new conflict (Arahabaki) and took away the original premise of Sasami and her brother having Amaterasu’s powers. Episode 10, however, was the worst. They suddenly introduce a brand new character who randomly grows a penis and had Tsurugi acting way too perverted than she should be. There was nothing of worth in any of this and all I could think of while watching this episode was “Okay, they’ve given up. The plot is so convoluted now that they don’t know what to do so they’ll just turn it into perverted smut and at least please somebody.” Episodes 11 and 12 weren’t much better. I’m honestly not sure what happened in these last two episodes…Jou wanted to kill Sasami but then she didn’t because they became friends but then she said she still would kill her…there was a grossly morbid scene where Jou rips out Tama’s heart for some reason I think…that golem came back and that nine-tailed fox girl did something I think…gosh, it was such a mess I don’t even know. And who the heck was that guy with wings who appeared for, like, one second and was never mentioned again? What was the point of that? The only thing I liked in these later episodes was how everyone would chat on that spiritual channel thing…that was clever.

As you can see, I thought Sasami-san turned out pretty bad. If it had stuck with the kind of stories it had in episodes 1-5 it probably wouldn’t have degraded so much. But it kept adding more and more to its story too late and too fast for too few episodes, resulting in a plot that was all over the place. I can’t give it a terrible rating because I did enjoy the first half of the show and I though the main characters (Sasami, her brother, and the Yagami sisters) were fun and likable. But as a whole, I can’t call it anything other than bad.

Kotoura-san

Kotoura-san had one of the best first episodes of any anime I’ve seen, which I discussed when I wrote my first impressions about it. I was so impressed that I was a bit afraid to continue watching it as I thought the rest of the series wouldn’t be able to live up to that initial quality. And, while the rest of the series wasn’t as good as that first episode, I definitely thought it was still good. For those of you who read my last editorial post about anime that mix comedy into their dramatic stories, Kotoura-san is a fine example of an anime with a lot of Mood Whiplash – one minute it’s really cute, comedic, and cartoonish, the next minute it’s perverted and dodgy, and still the next minute it’s extremely depressing and cruel. But despite the mood jumping around like this, I didn’t think it was that jarring and actually helped show diverse sides to the characters and story. We can see the sad side of the characters when the situation is sad, we can see them being silly when the situation is happy, and so on, and this adds a good amount of depth to them if done right.

The show has a fairly simple plot of Kotoura, who can read minds and suffered abandonment from her mother as a result, making friends with the members of the ESP club, the first group of friends she’s ever had. The episodes deal with the drama, and comedy, that ensues with Kotoura trying to fit in at school, get closer to her friends, especially the hapless pervert Manabe, and trying to get over the gnawing fear she has that her powers will end up hurting everyone around her. Being the character-driven show that it is, much of the show’s likability depends on whether you like the characters, and I thought they were all good. Like I said, because the show has equal amounts of comedy and drama, we see different sides of the characters and that makes them well developed. We see Mifune fool around with Kotoura and Muroto, and also how guilt-ridden she feels about using the former for her own purposes and how frustrated she is that the latter is too dense to notice her feelings for him. Similarly, Moritani is portrayed as a comedic character most of the time, but again we see how sincerely sorry she is for what she did to Kotoura and how heartbroken she is when Manabe rejected her. And just as the characters are multi-dimensional, the stories are too. There are a lot of funny, cute scenes, like the group going to karaoke and hilariously finding out that Kotoura is tone deaf, and Manabe and Kotoura sharing many sweet moments in episode 8, as well as very tragic moments, like Muroto taking the hit for Mifune in episode 11 and Kotoura feeling guilty that Manabe got hurt by Moritani’s followers because of her.

I didn’t like everything about Kotoura-san though. I thought it was utterly pointless making her grandpa such a pervert in episode 6. It’s one thing for a teenage boy like Manabe to be that way, but for an old man to be that way about his granddaughter? Unlike Manabe, it didn’t lend anything to his character and he’s only like that in that one episode – he doesn’t seem perverted in any other episode he’s in so it was really annoyingly pointless. I also found the outcome of the arc about the serial attacker kind of hard to swallow. How could the police not have had even the foggiest idea that the culprit was among them when she attacked so often and so frequently? And don’t you have to go through serious personality and background checks to become a cop? Couldn’t they have gotten hints about her extreme split personality beforehand? The rest of the arc was good, I just thought making Tsukino the attacker was far-fetched. And lastly, even though Kotoura kind of forgives her mother in the last episode, and it seems like the audience is supposed to as well, I just couldn’t. All she’s ever said is cruel, hurtful things to her daughter, so just because she mumbles “I’m sorry” in her sleep and sheds a few tears doesn’t just erase all that. And what has she been doing all this time since she abandoned Kotoura?

Despite not liking some things about it, overall I liked Kotoura-san. It has both drama and comedy, which I feel it mixed quite well. The premise about the tragedies of being able to read minds is good, the characters are likable, the stories are sweet and funny as well as dramatic, and it had a satisfying ending too (though it would have been better if Muroto finally recognized Mifune’s feelings…but she’ll keep trying!) I can’t say it was great but it’s certainly a good anime =)

Wow, this past season was disappointing; I didn’t expect it to be amazing, but still, there were a ton of shows that looked good at first then crashed during the second half, Sasami-san and Kotoura-san – the latter being more conditional – being big examples. Sasami-san was my favorite show of the season (that wasn’t a continuation; the last two episodes of Girls und Panzer swept the floor with the Winter lineup, in my opinion) after dropping Maoyuu; since I lost interest around the halfway mark, that really says something.

Something good came out of the extra time all the dropped shows provided me, though; I started watching an obscure but wonderful 2-episode OVA called Denpa teki na Kanojo, which is about a delinquent who tries to start a new life but runs into a myserious, shady girl who says she wants “to be his knight.” I certainly wish I had caught it when it first aired four years ago. I also rewatched a bit of Magic Knight Rayearth’s first season.

Also, the Spring 2013 season seems to be pretty good; I have become interested in RDG Red Data Girl, I am eagerly anticipating the Devil Survivor 2 anime since I am a fan of the game company Atlus (who also created the Persona metaseries), and I just watched a charming, brilliantly animated OVA called Little Witch Academia; I cannot recommend the latter enough.

Forgive me for being a bit wordy – I have been rather busy the past month or so.

That’s interesting that Sasami-san was your favorite show of the season but then it even disappointed you in its second half. It’s better if anime start off bad and get better, not the other way around XD And coincidentally, I also ended up dropping Maoyu, I gave it a handful of episodes but just couldn’t get into the story and characters. It became more of a chore to watch it than fun, and that’s a sign for me to drop something XP

I’ve seen Denpa teki na Kanojo actually, and yeah, it is good =)

Gonna check out some spring shows this week~

  2. Brianna says:

This was a rough season. I watched both shows as well, and I have to say, I agree with you entirely on both.

The only show I was really addicted to was Shinsekai Yori – as you discussed in your last post. Other than that, I had a difficult time this season. So many shows I watched about half way…and then forced myself to finish. I’m not even bothering to finish Sasami-san@Ganbaranai (I think I have 2 episodes left). I’m hoping this coming season will be better. Red Data Girl seems to be an interesting one for me as I’ve watched the 3 online episodes.

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, not many strong shows this season. Even the ones that I just finished that I liked, such as Shinsekai Yori and Bakuman 3, were two-cour shows from fall. Winter ’13 just wasn’t so hot =/ Hopefully spring will be better.

I’m also planning to check out Red Data Girl.

  3. Soran says:

this season wasn’t really shining, but yes kotoura was good and there were two anime that surpassed entirely my expectations,Haganai and Maou Yuusha, the last episodes for both were simply amazing, especially in haganai case,i’ve seen rarely in anime. If you haven’t watched them,i recommend you to,in Maou Yuusha,i assure you will be entertained to one of the best speeches in anime history,a speech that could move mountains , a speech that made my day and made me shed a tear;in Haganai..no i can’t say much about it,i wouldn’t want to spoil it for you. If you haven’t watch them, then be my guest and have a nice view.

  4. Yumeka says:

I watched Haganai Next and some of Maoyu. I can’t really call Haganai a great series but I do like the characters and it has its cute/funny moments outside the fan service. I personally didn’t find Mayou that engaging and ended up dropping it at episode 7. Glad to hear it had an amazing ending though.

  5. Cirris says:

Kotoura-san was really great show, UNTIL the “assault” arc. The show went really offtrack there. The final closing arc did bring the show back to good status and gave us some nice closure on some things.

I feel like the writers really messed up a good thing. They had a good premise going and some nice dramatic and comedic moments but they couldn’t build on it. So they decided to throw the show into a crap mystery saga instead. Your right about the ending. It was ho hum and stupid.

I also think Moritani being forgiven so easily was a bit contrived. But I guess Kotoura being saint-like in the way she acts around other peoples faults are what makes her character more endearing.

I didn’t get the whole “Gramps a lecherous old fart thing” either. Only thing i could think of is that they wanted to make him similar to Manabe so that Kotoura would be attracted to that “Type” since it runs in the family. Still, just didn’t work for me either.

    • Yumeka says:

Agree with everything you said about Kotoura-san. The assault mystery arc did seem out of place (though I did like the moments between Mifune and Muroto). Honestly I would have liked it better if they just came up with a better culprit. I also thought that Moritani not getting any significant punishment for what she did was a bit annoying…but at the same time she did seem sincerely sorry so it wasn’t too hard to forgive her.

  6. Kal says:

Sasami-San… Yeah, that was weird. I did not like it at the beginning, still made the effort to watch it. Had a few interesting bits as you mentioned, then the girl that grew a penis came out, and I simply stopped the playback, and deleted the whole mess from my computer. From your review, it seems I did not miss out on much. It’s just too messy to sort out, and the characters were not very likeable to me. The robot girl was the only character I could feel a little attached to, and that was not enough. None of the other characters did anything for me.

Kotoura-San is very different :) I liked it a lot, and even the bits you did not like, I liked them as well. I figured out the police officer was the attacker, and the split personality explained why Kotoura did not figure it out, and it made sense. As for the grandpa acting as a total pervert, I think it is simply a way to treat Kotoura like a normal person. Manabe and the Grandpa treat her normally. They do not feel “sorry” for her, they do not try to contain their thoughts, they just go “Heck, whatever” and treat her as a normal person. They do not hide any thoughts, and that’s what happens. So I think it’s just a side effect of not hiding any thoughts, and letting everything come out. That’s why Kotoura liked Manabe, he’s so simple minded that he expresses everything he thinks most of the time. She also knows they both have the best intentions towards her, and mean her no harm.

I still liked last season quite a bit :) some pretty good shows.

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, I can’t say you’re missing out on anything with the rest of Sasami-san. I think I actually liked it more than you since I did like the beginning episodes and the characters in general…but the second half was bad XP

Glad to hear you enjoyed Kotoura-san so much, even the parts I personally didn’t like.

  7. TWWK says:

I’m also having trouble completing my winter season shows – I just finished Little Busters last night and I still have a number of episodes of Shinsekai Yori to complete.

I ended up dropping Kotoura-san, though like you, I thought the first episode was outstanding. The show lost me a bit when it entered the criminal tracking arc, and I lost interest. :P

    • Yumeka says:

I wasn’t thrilled with Little Busters but apparently the next season will be the “real” ending, much like Clannad After Story was for Clannad. I’m expecting to like it better than this first season XD

I didn’t mind the criminal tracking arc in Kotoura-san as much as I didn’t like the outcome of it. But it wasn’t bad enough for me to drop the series, especially with just a few episodes to go after it =P

  8. Artemis says:

Sorry for the late comment! I hope you don’t mind.

I have to say I thought the winter anime season was one of the worst I’ve seen in quite a while. The only anime I ended up following the whole way through was Amnesia, and that was mostly for the lols – one of those shows that’s bad enough to be funny. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of the spring season though, which so far looks extremely promising. http://otakulounge.wordpress.com/2013/04/17/anime-taste-testing-spring-2013/

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, I wasn’t thrilled with this winter season either. Of the ones I watched, Kotoura-san was the best but even so, I couldn’t call it great. What I’ve seen of this current spring season however is looking much better =)

      • Artemis says:

        Definitely. :)
