The ultimate anime questionnaire

I’m feeling under the weather today, so we’re having a light topic for this post. Some years ago on my old fan site, I made a questionnaire that covered just about every aspect of someone’s anime fandom. Today I’ll be making a long overdue updated version of it, and would also like to invite any of my readers and fellow bloggers to take part in it as well…

These questions were made to give a general idea of someone’s tastes in anime and anime fandom, without going into extensive detail for each (unless you want to). A few of the questions are the same as the questions AceRailgun wrote a while back, but a lot are different and the questionnaire only has anime-related questions rather than personal ones. There are 27 questions total.

1. What anime have you seen? If you’ve seen too many to type out here, link to any list you may have, such as MAL.

All of the anime I’ve seen can be found on my MAL account, which I keep constantly up-to-date. Heh, when I first made this questionnaire on the old site, I was actually able to type out from memory all the anime I had seen. Those days are long gone XD

2. Out of those, which ones would you consider favorites?

Angel Beats!, Azumanga Daioh, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chi’s Sweet Home, Evangelion, Kannagi, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Noir, Pokemon, Wolf’s Rain

3. What was the first anime you ever watched and what was your first impression?

Sailor Moon. I liked it a lot and even though I was only in elementary school back then, I could tell that there was something special about it compared to other cartoons I used to watch. But I wouldn’t know that it was animation from Japan until years later.

4. In what year would you say you became an anime fan?

Although I first watched Sailor Moon in the mid-90s, I didn’t actually learn what anime was and actively seek out anime until I got into Pokemon in 1999. So I would say 1999-2000 is when I became an anime fan.

5. Do you read manga as well as watch anime?

The only long-running manga series I’ve read is Inuyasha and the only ongoing series I’m reading is Kannagi (and the Haruhi Suzumiya novels if you count those). During my early years of anime fandom, I occasionally read manga such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Evangelion, Utena, Chobits, Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo!, and Fushigi Yuugi. Later on I read a few others, mostly if I liked the anime first, such as Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star. But since I got more easy access to anime via a better computer and Internet in 2005, I’ve basically only been watching anime and don’t care to read manga. Anime delivers things I enjoy which manga cannot; color, sound, a better sense of movement, music, and voice acting.

6. What genre of anime usually interests you?

I’m open to pretty much all genres of anime – kids shows, moe, shonen, fantasy/adventure, romance/drama, slice-of-life, whatever. The ones I most like tend to be primarily slice-of-life but also incorporate themes of sci-fi and/or fantasy.

7. What genre of anime least interests you?

Anything so heavy on fan-service/ecchi/hentai that it overrides a good plot and good characters. I don’t care for anime that specifically cater to yaoi/yuri either, though I don’t mind if yaoi/yuri pairings are present in anime I watch. I’m not particularly keen on mecha series either, but I do watch them from time to time. I also tend to avoid sports-themed anime.

8. For your own personal enjoyment, what do you think is the most important factor in an anime?
For me it could be one of two things – a good, well-written story, or likable characters that I enjoy seeing…both together would be awesome too ;) That’s why I can enjoy both complex, plot-driven shows as well as episodic, slice-of-life shows. In the former, it’s usually the story I get into (characters sometimes too) and for the latter, it’s the fun of watching the characters. Great animation and music can be big pluses, but they’re still not as important to me as story and/or characters.

9. Which do you prefer, dub or sub?
Subs in most cases, especially in recent years where fewer dubs are being made. But if a dub is good, I could go for either one depending on the mood I’m in. But there are some series where I get very attached to the Japanese voices and don’t care to watch the dub.

10. Who are some of your favorite Japanese seiyuu?
Megumi Hayashibara, Ikue Ohtani, Aya Hirano, Mamoru Miyano, Rie Kugimiya, Houko Kuwashima, Tomokazu Sugita, Aya Hisakawa, and Satomi Koorogi.

11. If you watch anime dubs, who are some of your favorite voice actors?

Crispin Freeman, Johnny Yong Bosch, Eric Stuart, Veronica Taylor, Wendee Lee, Stephanie Sheh, and Laura Bailey. I’ve watched very few dubs made after 2007, so I’m not familiar with the newer English voice actors.

12. Which anime do you think has the worst English dub? And the best?

Cardcaptors is definitely the worst – it’s barely even the same show as Cardcaptor Sakura. A close second would be 4Kids’ version of One Piece. If we’re talking non-kids anime, I didn’t like the dubs of Angel Beats!, Love Hina, or Shana. And as for the best dubs, I would say Cowboy Bebop, Fruits Basket, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Madoka Magica, Wolf’s Rain, and Full Metal Alchemist.

13. What are your most disliked anime?

I’m not very picky with anime and tend to watch the ones I know I’ll like, so there are few that I truly dislike. My most hated one would be the second season of Nogizaka Haruka. Other than that, I didn’t really like Index, H20, Moretsu Pirates, or Digimon Savers.

14. Do you ever try to get people interested in anime? If so, what kind of success have you had?

Most of my friends already like anime, or did at some point, so I don’t need to get them interested. As for other people, not really since I’m not good at imposing my hobbies on others unless they’re clearly interested themselves. I have few relatives besides my mom, but I’ve watched a lot of anime with her over the years and she likes it (though I have to cherry pick titles carefully for her since her tastes are limited).

15. Who are your most favorite anime characters?

Haruhi (from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and Chopper (from One Piece) are my two most favorites. Others are Vash (Trigun), Asuka (Evangelion), Osaka and Sakaki (Azumanga Daioh), Shana (Shakugan no Shana), Nagi (Kannagi), Rock Lee, Gaara and Shikamaru (Naruto), Chi (Chi’s Sweet Home), Mireille and Kirika (Noir), Yuri (Angel Beats!) Kagami (Lucky Star), and Toboe (Wolf’s Rain)

16. Who are your least favorite anime characters?

Black Star from Soul Eater and Kenpachi, Ikkaku, and all the other overly violent, blood-thirsty characters from Bleach. I also tend to dislike characters who are solely there for hyperbolic comic relief in an otherwise serious anime, such as token lesbians in slice-of-life anime and blatantly obnoxious Those Two Guys.

17. Who are your favorite “non-human”(animal-like) characters?

Kero (Cardcaptor Sakura), Ryo-ohki (Tenchi Muyo!), Kirara (Inuyasha), Umagon (Konjiki no Gash Bell), Ein (Cowboy Bebop), Chopper (One Piece), Sakamoto (Nichijou), Kyubey (Madoka Magica), Luna (Sailor Moon), Chi (Chi’s Sweet Home), and a number of digimon and pokemon ;)

18. What are some ways you express your anime fandom? (going to conventions, blogging, reading fanfiction, etc)

Obviously blogging is one of the most important fandom outlets for me =) I also enjoy going to conventions when I can, especially Anime Expo. I enjoy good anime fan art and good AMVs too, though I don’t make any myself.

19. What kinds of anime products do you usually buy?

DVD/BD sets for series I first watch online and really like, but mostly character goods such as figures, plushies, key chains, art books, posters, and the like.

20. What are some of your favorite anime songs and soundtracks?

My most favorite anime song would be “Give a reason,” the opening for Slayers Next. Following that one would be “Kokoro no Chizu” (fourth One Piece opening), “Fukai Mori” (second Inuyasha ending), “Gravity” (Wolf’s Rain ending), “Lion” and “Triangular” (Macross Frontier openings), “God Knows…” (Haruhi song from Live A Live), “D-techno life” (second Bleach opening), “Plenty of grit” (Slayers Revolution opening), and “Shine” (Seirei no Moribito opening). As for soundtracks, my most favorites would be the ones for Noir, Wolf’s Rain, and Madoka. I adore music by Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura~

21. What anime pairings/shippings do you like?

I’ve gone through many over the years, my strongest one being InuyashaxKagome from Inuyasha. Now I’m leaning towards HaruhixKyon. Most of the pairings I like are canon though ;)

22. What medium to you usually use to watch anime? (buy DVDs, streaming, etc)

In my early years as a fan, I would mostly watch dubbed anime on TV, buy DVDs occasionally, and borrow DVDs or VHS copies from friends. In recent years, I watch anime online via fansubs and streaming, and sometimes borrow DVDs/BDs from friends. I still buy DVDs/BDs myself, but only for series I’ve already seen and liked.

23. What is your favorite anime quote?

Not sure, but here’s one I’ve always liked : “There are as many truths as there are people.” – Kaji, Evangelion

24. What are your favorite anime movies?

Pokemon 2000, Tokyo Godfathers, Cowboy Bebop the Movie, The End of Evangelion, 5 Centimeters per Second, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, and Summer Wars

25. What other “geeky,” media-related hobbies besides anime do you have? (video games, Western animation, etc)

I love animation as a medium, but anime gives me pretty much all the animated fulfillment I need, so I watch very little other animation. But I still love Disney and Pixar movies. I play video games once in a while, mostly Pokemon games though. Other games I like are Okami, Sonic the Hedgehog, Harvest Moon, and Smash Brothers.

26. What is your most favorite anime of all, and why is it your favorite?

Haruhi…as for why, look here.

27. What are some anime you haven’t watched but want to someday?

So many! To name a few: Monster, Bacanno!, Princess Tutu, ef, Zetsubou Sensei, Gankutsuou, Minami-ke, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and Natsume Yuujinchou. I mostly watch seasonal shows and tend to more often rewatch my old favorites than start watching a finished show I haven’t yet seen. But I’m working on it, slowly but surely XD

Feel free to repost this questionnaire on another site and replace my answers with your own. I’d love to see what you have to say =) I’d also like to hear any suggestions you may have for additional questions to be added should I decide to update the questionnaire again one day (they should be very general questions and not too specific or complex).

No Comments… read them or add your own.

  1. Kal says:

    1) Oh wow… I’ve seen so many. I do not have a MAL account either. So I cannot list them. I like all genres, so I’ve seen all kinds of them. Fantasy, mecha, slice of life, and everything in between. So it is a long, and varied list.

    2) For favorites, I have to say Full metal panic is probably my favorite. It has a really serious and complex plot, and lots of fun parts. I like it a lot. Gundam seed is also good, Clannad (always makes me cry), Haruhi (very good adaptations, love the light novels), Code Geass, fruits basket, host club… There are many more, and quite varied.

    3) The first anime I saw was Robotech. It’s based on the Macross anime, and I was 8 years old back then. I knew it was somehow different from other cartoons at the time, so it really piqued my interest. It was until many years later that I learned what anime was, and was able to look for Macross and many more from there.

    4) Well, that was back in 1985, but I did not know what anime really was. I became a much more active fan when internet came out in full force. So probably about 2000 or so.

    5) I read Hayate no gotoku, and that’s about it… Read a few more, but not much. Like you, I also prefer anime. I do love light novels though, so I’ve read a few of those.

    6) Genres? Hum… Any as long as it can deliver a good story and has interesting characters. So I watch pretty much anything. The ones I dislike somewhat are the fan-service heavy, harem style anime with little plot, and weak protagonist (Infinite Stratos is a good example) . Although even some of them can be quite interesting.

    7) Hehe, already answered on #6, so pretty much same answer as you gave. But I do like good mecha anime :)

    8) Definitely characters. Good characters can really make an anime shine. Even if the anime has a weaker plot, just watching some good character interaction can save it for me. Of course, as you said, good story also helps, so if it has both, even better. Music and animation are a plus, but good characters and a good story can overcome even that.

    9) Sub. The Japanese voice actors have this down to an art. Simply can’t get the same from a sub. Also, English not being my first language I’ve been watching subs since I was little, so I’m very used to it :P

    10) Oh gosh, I’m really bad with names. The one that does the voice of Taiga in Tora Dora (and many more). Don’t know her name, but she is really good, and easy to recognize.

    11, 12) Don’t really watch dubs…

    13) High school of the dead. Could only watch 3 eps. I do not like the zombie theme. Infinite Stratos. Weak main characters can really break a series for me. Can’t remember more of the top of my head… I dislike very few of them, I try to watch it for what it is.

    14) My dad likes some of the sci-fi/mecha anime, so he’ll watch some. My mom likes anime movies (the girl who leapt through time). My cousin likes the more cutsei anime (Acchi Kocchi), but can watch some of the funny anime as well (The world god only knows). Like you, I have to cherry pick, and will never force them to watch anything. Better keep them with a little “like” for anime, and not try to push too hard…

    15) Eh, can’t really say. There are quite a bit. I like strong characters, but that also have some kind of weakness. Hinagiku (Hayate no gotoku), Taiga… Hum… Tsundere type is pretty good I guess…

    16) The main character from Infinite stratos. Making such a clueless character should be a crime. Also the main character from true tears (another clueless guy). I really dislike characters that are made too clueless. That really pushes me away.

    17) The pipe fox from xxxholic. It’s just too good :)

    18) Well, not much… I have a super deformed Hahuri I got for Christmas, and a Haruhi phone carrier. That’s about it. I’m not ashamed of anime, I just never felt the need to advertise it either. I’m a low profile kind of guy…

    19) Not much… Hard to get anime stuff around here :S

    20) Anohana ending song (awesome song!), pretty much all the gundam seed songs. All the music for Tsubasa Chronicles… Well, pretty much anything from Yuki Kajiura as well. She’s pretty awesome.

    21) Souske/Chidori from full metal panic. They are just too funny (they are canon).

    22) Fansubs. Anime is just too hard to get here, or too expensive.

    23) “The only thing you can change about the past is how you feel about it in the present.” ~Lockon Stratos, Mobile Suit Gundam 00

    24) Haruhi movie is awesome. Ghimli movies are all pretty good. Girl who leapt through time.

    25) Like you, pixar and disney can make some good animation, but still not as good as anime. I love going to the movies (Batman 3 was good!), I love computers, computer games (MMORPGs). All pretty geeky :S

    26) Full meta panic. It just has everything in one anime series. And the Fumoffu side stories are the funniest thing I have ever seen.

    27) Can’t think of any right now… When I find something that maybe interesting, I put some effort into watching it.

    As for other possible questions:

“If you could make any anime you want, what would you like to see?”

    • Yumeka says:

Thanks for sharing your list of answers!

Spanish is your first language, correct? So do you usually watch anime with Spanish subtitles or English?

For #10, you’re talking about Rie Kugimiya, one of my favorites too =)

I really like that Lockon quote! Oh yeah, and the AnoHana ED is one my favorite EDs too!

      • Kal says:

Yeah, Spanish is my first language. There are more groups that sub in English (so usually comes out faster), and Spanish subs are not always that good. So generally English subs for me.

  2. Myna says:

    Pretty much knew everything already.

I know you were disappointed with Index but I didn’t think you disliked it that much.
You really seem to stay in your comfort zone when watching anime, don’t you?

Get on your plan to watch list already! :D

    • Yumeka says:

I don’t hate Index, but if I had to pick my most disliked anime out of all the ones I’ve seen, it would be one, especially the second season.

Hmm, I think I watch a good variety of anime and don’t feel I have a “comfort zone.” Besides yaoi/yuri and sports (and, well, hentai and intense fan service), I watch all kinds. What would you suggest is an anime outside my comfort zone?

Once I’m done with Fate/Stay Night, I’ll try and start on another of my Plan To Watch series.

      • Myna says:

I think by comfort zone I mean that you don’t really take any ‘shots in the dark’ when choosing seasonal shows. You decided against Tsuritama because you don’t care for fishing, but I think that you would like it. it’s a very fun show with fantastic characters and just a joy to watch.

I’d just like to see you take a chance or two on something more often.

        • Yumeka says:

I see…so you mean that I tend to only watch shows I think I’ll like. I think that’s what most people do honestly – watch shows they think they’ll like and not watch shows they don’t think they’ll like (well, I know you watch even things you don’t think you’ll like – and you usually end up not liking them – but most people don’t). You’re right that you could technically miss out on something good this way, but then again, when you have so much anime each season and not enough time for everything, you want to pick the ones that give you a good first impression. However, I will consider what you said and possibly pick anime to watch that don’t immediately click with me ;)

          • Myna says:

I guess I’m friends with the minority on MAL because pretty much everyone on my friend list watches stuff they don’t like, haha.

  3. Frootytooty says:

Lol funnily enough in the year or so that I’ve been reading your blog, I’ve actually come to already know all your answers! Despite all the new anime you watch each season, it seems your favorites continue to be the older, well-loved classics. Although, the more anime I watch the less able I am to remember even the ones I enjoyed, so I suppose it’s to be expected that the early favorites tend to stay with us better.

And for the same reason I won’t attempt this quiz because my answers would just be too long. XD

    • Yumeka says:

I’m glad you’ve gotten to know me well over the year(s) ^^,,,

Heh, depending on what you consider “new” anime, you’re right that most of the series amongst my favorites are at least five years old – though to some people, only titles older than a decade could be called “classics.” But yeah, my favorites tend to stick with me, especially because I rewatch them a lot, whereas I rarely rewatch anime I didn’t love the first time.

  4. CoolCARTGuy says:

    This’ll be a tad long-winded, so be ready…

    1) I have no list online, but I do keep a record of the ones I liked (and, in most cases, still like) on a Microsoft Word file – last count was 127.

    2) Gurren Lagann, Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, You’re Under Arrest, Rurouni Kenshin, School Rumble, Carnival Phantasm, Fullmetal Alchemist, Valkyria Chronicles, Spice and Wolf, and The Idolm@ster.

    3) Pokemon – I had a fascination with wildlife as a kid and an unquenchable desire for odd fantasy; Pokemon satisfied both fronts. While I could tell something was different with the animation style, it would be almost another decade before I became an anime fan.

    4) The Fall of 2007 was when I became an anime fan when I watched Love Hina and discovered Azumanga Daioh shortly thereafter.

    5) I read a lot of manga; among my manga, I have the first eight omnibuses of InuYasha, the first sixteen volumes of School Rumble, the rereleases of Sailor Moon, and many collections that are permanently incomplete. I received word in Otaku USA that the Madoka Magica manga is coming to the U.S. and I’m psyched!

    6) I used to be a big romantic comedy and slice-of-life fan and those tastes of mine are making a comeback recently. However, I cannot really say I have any major genre preference.

    7) Hentai; while I’m all for some occasional titillation, I don’t think I could down something that comprises mostly of sex. This is not to say I disapprove of sex or sexual behavior in my anime and related products; I love virtually anything with Kinoko Nasu’s name on it such as Tsukihime or the Fate series of visual novels, but those have an actual plot and the sex scenes in the aforementioned visual novels are merely asides and roughly equate to the amount of smut one could expect of a soap opera.

Also, while not a genre unto itself, I am not terribly interested in shows that focus on otaku; they usually end up irritating the crap out of me because the otaku are often unbearable as characters.

    8) Three particular factors I lean on are interesting characters, fascinating character interaction and an appealing art design. For an example of what I mean for the latter, see virtually anything created by Kinoko Nasu or directed by Akiyuki Shinbo.

    9) Neither; this is an old debate that I think has been going on for too long. Besides, this is a question that varies from series to series.

    10) Marina Inoue and that’s about it; I do not know many male seiyuu and don’t normally pay as much attention as I once did to who originally voiced characters. There might be some others, but I cannot think of anyone else right now.

    11) Travis Willingham, Michelle Ruff, Luci Christian, Crispin Freeman, Laura Bailey, Leah Clark, and Colleen Clinkenbeard are definitely my favorites.

    12) The dub of the ecchi anime Eiken is arguably the worst anything I have heard; the script was terrible and the pronunciation of some of the names are off; poor pronunciation is a pet peeve of mine. However, even that dub isn’t as unbearable as the dub of Ikki Tousen since the voice actors are all quite talented and it gets depressing to hear talented people voice such insipid characters.

In the way of the best dubs, Fullmetal Alchemist is arguably the best in my opinion, followed by Slayers, School Rumble, Full Metal Panic!, Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, Noir, and the recently dub of Madoka Magica.

    13) Dead Leaves is the among the worst anime out there; Gainax, why the hell did you think this parade of immature, juvenile throwaway gags was worthy of being released?

    14) I have never attempted to get others interested in anime; I tend to keep my hobbies to myself most of the time unless somebody has already mentioned their interest in the same hobby.

    15) Homura (Madoka Magica), Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter (Sailor Moon), Sango (InuYasha), Welkin Gunther and Alicia Melchiott (Valkyria Chronicles), Rin Tohsaka (Fate/Stay Night), Mikoto Misaka (Index/Railgun), Asuka Langley Soryu (Evangelion), Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist), Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist), Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist), and Mikoto Suou (School Rumble).

    16) Any antagonist whose behavior is poorly explained, perverted characters with no redeeming characteristics, and most poorly-made characters in general.

    17) I don’t really have any favorite non-human characters in anime.

    18) One way I enjoy expressing my fandom is by blending it in with other hobbies of mine (especially auto racing); in fact, I am writing team profiles about a fictional stock car league featuring anime characters as drivers. I also write down what songs I think would fit well in a series, usually using an episode-by-episode format.

    19) I primarily purchase art books; I have no anime in my house currently, so most of my watching is through either FUNimation’s website or fansubs.

    20) My favorite anime song is “Magia” by Kalafina, hands down; I normally do not enjoy J-Pop or J-Rock music that much, so I cannot list any others I am that interested in.

    21) Too many to count, but my top five in no particular order would by Roy x Riza (FMA), Kagome x InuYasha (InuYasha), Welkin x Alicia (Valkyria Chronicles), Kiritsugu x Irisviel (Fate/Zero), and Shinichi x Ran (Detective Conan).

    22) Primarily, streaming is how I watch anime nowadays, though I watched every episode of the Gurren Lagann dub when it was airing on Sci-Fi Channel.

    23) “Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return.” – Alphonse Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist

    24) The only anime movie I can truly say I like is the Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works movie and the first four Kara no Kyoukai films.

    25) Besides anime, I love looking up sports and racing statistics; in fact, I’ve spent most of my free time this summer on racing-reference.info perusing the massive amounts of data.

    26) Fullmetal Alchemist is my favorite series of all time. A vast number of the characters are memorable, the story is gripping and keeps living up to the expectations it builds up, the backgrounds and character designs are incredibly appealing, and the lighting is very appropriate in almost every scene.

    27) I’m not really sure; I’ve seen most of the anime I’ve wanted to watch, so I’d have to think about that one a bit more.

    • Yumeka says:

Thanks for taking the time to answer =)

Heh, I also like the Slayers dub – it was one of the few early 2000 dubs that was good, though I mostly liked it because so many of the original Pokemon dub actors are in it XD

For your favorite characters, it’s nice to know someone else who likes Sango :3 Though I always had trouble picking between her and Kagome as my favorite Inuyasha character. I’m currently watching Fate/Stay Night and Rin is steadily becoming an interesting character to me =)

      • CoolCARTGuy says:

Yeah, Slayers did have a lot of Pokemon voice actors. For me, Lisa Ortiz IS Lina Inverse.

I also had a hard time picking between Kagome and Sango, too; what sealed it for me was my fondness for female characters who are warriors. Of course, that reason is also why I cannot really pick a straight favorite between Rin and Saber in Fate/Stay Night. Rider and Caster are also cool, too.

I thought the Fate/Stay Night anime was rushed, but then again, the difference between the visual novel and TV formats in regards to advancing a storyline are part of why the pacing felt odd; A TV show has more time constraints and cannot take as much time to reveal the story compared to a visual novel.

  5. Kai says:

Ahh so you collect figures too? Never knew. In fact, I never knew you were such a hardcore collector as overall, I don’t think I collect as much as you, just some random figures here and there and perhaps bits of DVD D:

I’m also usually not one for mecha or sports unless the anime is very, very exceptional. Nice to see another decade long anime fan too^^ Anyhow, I’ll be posting mine in my blog soon.

    • Yumeka says:

I started collecting figures in late 2007 I believe. The first figure I got was the Haruhi Nendoroid :3 I don’t buy them very often because they’re expensive and I only want ones of my most favorite characters. I buy about 1-3 a year I’d say.

I look forward to seeing your answers to the questions ^_^

  6. Nopy says:

Ahh, so many blogging projects happening this week. I think it’ll take me a while to get around to this.

  7. william in dc says:

Ill answer later but you left out best villains! ( although could get spoilerish).

    • Yumeka says:

Oh dear, I’m afraid your answers to the questions that you recently posted accidentally got sent to my spam folder and was deleted 0_o It was too late by the time I realized it – I hope you saved a copy, and if you did, please resubmit it. Sorry about that.

  8. polkaboys1991 says:

what anime is the picture from?

  9. lostty says:

I might have to fill out this questionnaire, too….I can’t help but love answering questions! xD

Nice to find another fan of Asuka, as well as a hater of H20! haha!

Your list of anime you want to see someday is so good! Out of the titles I saw, I loved them all!

    • Yumeka says:

Cool, I look forward to seeing your answers XD

Heh, I don’t hate H20, but it was one of the series I least enjoyed watching, for most of it at least – I did like the ending though.

  10. Mikoto says:

    1) I have a MAL, though I rarely update it, so even that won’t be accurate. I will say that I tend to be interested in a whole wide variety of genres, and I don’t follow studios regliously, but if it’s CLAMP or Key-related, it’s likely that I have seen it.

    2) Cardcaptor Sakura, Evangelion, Samurai Champloo, Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fullmetal Alchemist, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Air, Clannad, Rurouni Kenshin

    3) Dragon Ball/Pokemon/Sailor Moon. Not only did their fictional universes and toys appealed to me, but they had an eastern aura about them that also appealed to me, a boy of eastern descent (of course, all three at that point had dubs that were heavily Americanized, but I found it easy to tell that they weren’t Western productions). Pokemon especially appealed to me as a kid due to its adventurous nature at the time.

    4) Mid-to-late 90s. I became interested in anime around the age of five, at the very least.

    5) I read manga and visual novels as much as I watch anime. All have their pros and cons, manga involves less executive meddling, visual novels can be as long as they want and have sound and color, and anime has movement and color. For manga with anime counterparts, there are some that I prefer to the anime, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and D.N.Angel. The beauty of titles existing in multiple mediums, I think, is that in some cases you get more of a certain series without feeling like you’re going through the same thing twice. Things can be slightly different, extremely different, slightly the same, exactly the same, etc.

    6) I’m not a person that sticks to one genre – the reason I watch anime is because there are a variety of genres, after all. I tend to love genre-blenders that can do it right, though – like Haruhi.

    7) Yaoi/shonen-ai. Anything that reminds me of Boku no Pico, basically. That’s pretty much it. Straight-up harem anime doesn’t interest me much either, unless the humor is supposed to be really good.

    8) A good factor in an anime is whether or not the directors know what they’re trying to aim at, in my opinion. Is it a deconstruction? Are you trying to make the best comedy of the season? Or a quaint, easygoing slice-of-life? I’ve seen some series that I would have enjoyed better if they didn’t seem aimless.

Characters need to be well-written and interesting as well. And at the very least, likable if it was an anime like Lucky Star.

    9) I prefer anime in Japanese, for the most part. I do enjoy some dubs, and appreciate that (in hindsight) no dubs are as bad as they were in the 90s.

    10) Masaya Onosaka, Nana Mizuki, Rie Kugimiya, Tomokazu Sugita, Norio Wakamato, Hikaru Midorikawa, Aya Hisakawa, Rica Matsumoto, Aya Hirano, YUKANA, and Tomoko Kawakami.

Yuki Horinaka also impressed with with her roles as Mafuyu of Seitokai no Ichizon and Elise Lutus of the JRPG Tales of Xillia, but she doesn’t have any other roles that I know of, so she’s just an honorable mention.

    11) Steve Blum, Crispin Freeman, Johnny Yong Bosch, Christina Vee, and Laura Bailey. No other English voice actor impressed me as much as those five.

    12) The worst English dub is definitely “Cardcaptors,” hands down. The 4Kids version of One Piece comes in close second as well as all of their other properties.

The best dubs I’ve heard so far are Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo – in fact, they were so superb, I liked them as much as their Japanese versions.

    13) Naruto. I used to like it, but now, not so much. I mostly just dislike the more rabid fans, though I’m not one to judge a person for liking it.

    14) Not really. Any time I recommend an anime, it’s usually to a friend who already likes it. I guess you could count my little sister, but she’s been watching stuff with me since she was born six years ago, so… :P

    15) Haruhi (from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), Sakura and Syaoran (Cardcaptor Sakura), Asuka (Evangelion), Mugen (Samurai Champlooh), Shana (Shakugan no Shana), Ushio (Clannad), Zelos Wilder and Colette Brunel (really a game, but Tales of Symphonia has an OVA), Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin), Konata (Lucky Star), Laharl (again, a game, but Disgaea had an anime), Yugi Mutou and Ryou Bakura (Yu-Gi-Oh!, mainly their manga counterparts), Myuutwo (Pokemon, the Japanese interpretation of the charater), the Elric brothers and Greedling (Fullmetal Alchemist), and Azusa Nakano (K-ON!)

    16) Just the characters who are presented as the scourge of humanity. I really lenient when it comes to characters. But Makoto from the visual novel/anime School Days and Koko from the visual novel/anime Da Capo II are notable characters that I generally loathe.

    17) Kero and Suppie (Cardcaptor Sakura), Guilmon (Digimon Tamers), Mieu and Repede (Tales series games, but they have anime), Pikachu (Pokemon),

    18) I own an anime blog. I also attend conventions whenever I could, and I make MAD videos and upload them to YouTube. Oh, I’m also a fanartist.

    19) DVD/BD discs, figurines, posters, wallscrolls, artbooks, etc. the essentials. Though since I’m poor, I don’t buy these things as often as I want.

    20) The soundtrack from KyoAni’s Key adaptations are pretty memorable to me, as is any theme sung by Nana Mizuki or songs composed by Yuki Kajiura.

    21) SYAORAN/SAKURA! FTW

    22) My predominate methods to watch anime is though fansubs, though I prefer watching them on DVDs and Blu-Ray.

    23) “Zettai daijōbu da yo!” – Sakura Kinomoto, Cardcaptor Sakura.

    24) Rebuild of Evangelion movies, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away (Miyazaki films in general), Cardcaptor Sakura: The Sealed Card, Pocket Monsters: Myuutwo’s Counterattack, Pocket Monsters: Emperor of the Crystal Tower ENTEI, Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation: Myuu and the Hadou-Gliding Hero Lucario,

    25) Video games, of both the Japanese and western variety. Anime/manga-styled RPGs such as Tales (of Symphonia, of the Abyss, of Destiny, etc.) and Nippon Ichi-produced games kind of overlap with my anime fandom. Along with video games, I play “TRPGs” on Roll20.

I have a penchant for Japanese superheroes as well, whether it be live-action, manga, etc. like Kamen Rider. I’m also into western cartoons, especially series based on comic book superheroes, like the famous DCAU. Oh, and let’s not forget Asian programs in general, such as Hong Kong mvoies, horror films, and dramas.

    26) It’s hard to choose between Cardcaptor Sakura and Haruhi! But if I must, I must choose Cardcaptor Sakura. I made more memories of it, I guess.

    27) To name a few: Kimi to Boku, Canaan, and Deadman Wonderland.

Thanks for sharing your answers ^_^ Though I’m surprised you didn’t post your answers on your blog =P

I already knew you were a Haruhi fan but nice to know another CCS fan too! And just to note about the Pokemon movies, I always heard that the dub of the first one changed Mewtwo’s character for the worse, and I actually finally watched it in Japanese a couple of years ago. I’ll always have fond memories of the dub, but the Japanese version of that one (and the second movie) are much better.

It was a copy paste thing
    2. Out of those, which ones would you consider favorites?
Def Cardcaptor Sakura. As a child I enjoyed it more than I do now. I think it was the drawings style that drew me in the most.
    3. What was the first anime you ever watched and what was your first impression?

Also Sailor moon. It was sooo great to me. I’d record it on video tape every morning and was set on watching every episode. It’s the anime that ultimately inspired me to be an artist, I’d draw usagi every day xD

    4. In what year would you say you became an anime fan?

    Around early 2000’s.

    5. Do you read manga as well as watch anime?

I do read manga, not as frequently as I watch anime. What usually makes me seek out manga is when the anime I’m watching is based off of one, but the anime isn’t finished or has stopped being written altogether.

    6. What genre of anime usually interests you?

All throughout my high school years I was mainly interested in suspense/horror/thriller type. Anything with a murder mystery, things like that. But only recently, about 2014ish have I been more open with watching different anime. The only genre’s I’m really still a bit irked to go near is sports and like big robot shit. Aldnoha. zero (excuse me if I spelt that wrong) is the only one I’ve watched really, and although the opening is quite good, the anime itself is meh at best. I genuinely enjoyed the first 8 eps or so, but as a representation of it’s genre, I’d say it’s let me down more than a bit and the plot was all over the place. The next anime, on a long list of many, that I’m even semi willing to go near is evangelion.

    7. What genre of anime least interests you?

Sports, ecchi ..which is funny cause I don’t mind prison school. It has to be done right, I guess. Otherwise it really peeves me off. Unless it’s porn, please go away. Ahh cooking.

    8. For your own personal enjoyment, what do you think is the most important factor in an anime?
The most important factor is a great/good/appealing story line, memorable strong characters that I can invest in and I prefer them to be nicely drawn.

    9. Which do you prefer, dub or sub?
It depends. But usually I lean more towards sub simply for the fact that it’s released first, and I cbb waiting for the dub to be released. And for a lot of dubs that I’ve watched recently, after having already watched the sub, have had voices that are too high pitched and not suiting to the character. For instance, I checked out the zankyou no terror dub just to see what it was like, and finding out that the guy who plays Kogami’s voice from psycho pass- Which I think is very nicely fitted for that character btw, all of the english voice actors for PP are- Was chosen for Shibazaki, I was just like “wtf”. The character is old, but that voice actor sounds young and freaking sarcastic. It just doesn’t go with the character’s personality or appearance at all.

    10. Who are some of your favorite Japanese seiyuu?
I’m actually not to familiar with any specific japanese voice actors

    11. If you watch anime dubs, who are some of your favorite voice actors?

Not too familiar with any english anime voice actors either. Though I can usually spot them out by listening to them. For example, the woman that plays Anna Libert in monster also plays Miss Yamanaka’s voice from K-on.
    12. Which anime do you think has the worst English dub? And the best?
Best: Maybe Psycho pass & Steins gate Worst: Gangsta, Tokyo ghoul is pretty bad ..there are probably more for both sides but idk.

    13. What are your most disliked anime?

I’m not going to be able to name these all, but the anime I’ve chosen are disliked bc of extreme over popularity and annoyance over it being so despite how boring I personally find them. Probably gonna get a lot of hate lol. FMA, Pokemon, Digimon, Beyablade, Assassination class room, Naruto, Bleach, Bobobobobobobobo etc.
    14. Do you ever try to get people interested in anime? If so, what kind of success have you had?

I’ve had somewhat a success in getting non anime lovers to watch anime. None of them have really gone on to branch off into their own otaku fan phase though. The most luck I’ve had is with my bf. Sometimes I’m just busting to show him one bc it’s soooo good to me. But he only agrees some of the time lel.

    15. Who are your most favorite anime characters?

    Mio/Ritzu/Yui/Azuza (K-On), Anna/Johan/Kenzo (Monster), Misa/Light/L (Death Note), Lucy/Nana (Elfen Lied) Kogami/Akane/Shogo/Ginoza (Psycho Pass) Sailor Moon/Sailor Mars/Sailor Saturn/Sailor Uranus/Sailor Neptune/Tuxedo Mask/Molly/Luna/Sailor Mini Moon/Pegasus/fish-eye (Sailor Moon ..there’s more character’s I like but can’t remember) Chihiro (Spirited Away), Hana/Kiyoshi/Chio/Meiko/Mari/Risa/Takehito (Prison School) Yuki/Zero (Vampire Knight), Isla ;_; (Plastic Memories), Ohana/meiko (Hanasaku Iroha) etc there’s are too many and I cbb

    16. Who are your least favorite anime characters?

Naruto (Naruto), Masao (Shiki), Near (Death note), Ash (Pokemon), Kirito (Psycho Pass), Kirito (SAO) etc.

    17. Who are your favorite “non-human”(animal-like) characters?

Kero (Cardcaptor Sakura), Luna (Sailor Moon), Goku/Vegeta (DBZ), Hamtaro (Hamtaro), Migi/Tamaya Rieko/Izumi Shinichi (Parasyte), Zero/Yuki (Vampire knight) Megumi (Shiki), Isla (Plastic Memories) etc

    18. What are some ways you express your anime fandom? (going to conventions, blogging, reading fanfiction, etc) Tumblr/fangirling.

    19. What kinds of anime products do you usually buy?

DVD, toys ..a bit, stickers, games.
    20. What are some of your favorite anime songs and soundtracks?

Some of my favs would include Every song sung by egoist in psycho pass, the zankyou no terror ending song, Every K-On song nearly, although my fav is Fude Pen Boru Pen & Tenshi ni Fureta yo. Also the shiki opening and Steins gate opening etc.

    21. What anime pairings/shippings do you like?

Hmm well this is hard bc once again, I won’t be able to name them all. Partly bc I’ve forgotten some of their names. But as for the ones I can remember, I like Zero/Yuki, Shogo/Kogami, Kogami/Akane, Akane/Ginoza, Ginoza/Kogami, Sailor moon/tuxedo mask, Uranus/Neptune, Mini Moon/ Pegasus, Chihiro/haku, Johan/tenma etc
    22. What medium to you usually use to watch anime? (buy DVDs, streaming, etc)

In the early days it was purely on tv, but now I stream it on the internet.

    23. What is your favorite anime quote?

Can’t think of one off the top of my head unfortunately.

    24. What are your favorite anime movies?

The girl who leapt through time, spirited away, when marni was there. Hanasaku iroha (movie) etc

    25. What other “geeky,” media-related hobbies besides anime do you have? (video games, Western animation, etc) Ahh I watch tv series and fangirl over some celebrities/youtubers.

    26. What is your most favorite anime of all, and why is it your favorite?

That’s such a hard question. My anime watch list is getting bigger all the time and I get so many feels from a lot of them, narrowing it down to one is impossible for me. So I just wont choose one.

    27. What are some anime you haven’t watched but want to someday?

Just naming some I can think off from the top of my head; Evengelion, Ghost in the shell, corpse party, when they cry, hellsing etc.
