First impressions of the fall ’11 anime I’m watching

Almost all of the seasonal anime I had been watching since spring ’11 ended this season, so I had room to pick up quite a few fall ’11 titles. There are a lot of sequels I’m interested in this season, as well as some brand new series. Now that the first couple of weeks of the fall 2011 anime have passed, how have the shows I’m watching fared?…

Bakuman 2
Episodes 1-2 so far

Bakuman 2 starts off right where season 1 left off. And in terms of quality, these first two episodes are just as good as anything the first series could deliver. It has the same well written story, likable characters, and great ability to deliver shonen suspense without the need for action and fantasy elements. Already episode 2 had me tearing up a bit and at the edge of my seat. A few new eccentric characters are introduced this season but old ones aren’t forgotten either. I look forward to seeing more manga industry drama and how the relationships between Moritaka/Miho and Akito/Kaya further develop.

While I don’t like the Bakuman 2 opening as much as the first season’s “Blue Bird,” I do like the new ending by Tommy heavenly6.

Working’!!
Episodes 1-2 so far

Working!! (Wagnaria!! in the official English release) is a fun little slice-of-life/comedy anime. Not a fantastic series but definitely worth a watch if you like that genre. Like the new season of Bakuman, this new season of Working!! is thus far giving more of the same entertainment that season 1 had – silly, character-driven antics in the case of Working’!!. One of the bad points of the first season is that I felt Inami got too much screentime. Not that she’s a boring character, but I would have liked to see more focus on other characters too, particularly the rather enigmatic Yamada. It’s hard to say yet whether this second season will pick up any kind of focus or efficiently develop any particular character. There was some emphasis on Yamada in episode 2 so perhaps we’ll finally learn more about her. But regardless, I’m sure I’ll enjoy seeing more amusing anecdotes from the Wagnaria staff.

Though not as catchy to me as the season 1 opening “Someone Else,” Working’!!’s opening “Coolish Walk” will undoubtedly get stuck in my head too XD

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
Episodes 0-1 so far

Haganai for short, or translated into English as “I Don’t Have Many Friends,” is a series that’s hard for me to judge after just one episode and an episode 0 OVA. Unfortunately the opening’s visuals make it look like an ecchi harem anime even though there’s pretty much no fan service in episode 1 (and little in episode 0). So at this point it seems like the series could either go the ecchi harem route that the opening makes it appear to be, or it could become a more dignified, character-driven series about relationships between a group of people who have difficulty making friends. Since the Haganai light novels are very popular in Japan, and I enjoyed episode 1 well enough, I’m pretty confident that it isn’t just fancied harem fodder but actually has good value worthy of the popularity of its light novels.

The setup of the series is a bit reminiscent of Haruhi in that our male lead meets a weird girl who ropes him into making a brand new club at school. While nothing has stood out to me yet about our male protagonist Kodaka, I don’t find him as noticeably boring as other male leads either. Our two lead females in a love triangle with Kodaka, Sena and Yozora, seem like they have good personalities that will provide endless comedy as they bounce off each other. Can’t comment on the other girls since they haven’t been introduced yet but they look interesting.

I’d also like to mention that Yozora has one of the prettiest Japanese names I’ve come across. The kanji for her full name “三日月夜空” translates to something like “the new moon of the night sky.”

Shakugan no Shana III (Final)
Episode 1 so far

Nearly four years after Shana II, the third and final Shana series is airing. Technically there was the Shana S OVA in between, but that was just four side-story episodes. I’ve seen the first Shana series twice but I watched Shana II only once as it aired and I pretty much forgot everything that happened in it. So I made sure to read the Wikipedia episode summaries to refresh my memory before starting Shana III! Shana is a series that’s full of complicated fantasy terminology and subplots, which is what makes it interesting but also difficult to follow. Regardless, I feel the Shana characters as a whole are great, as is the fantastical style of the series. I also love how the series can shift from hardcore fantasy to romance drama seamlessly. Shana is one of my most favorite characters of all, not just because I love her design (perfect mix of coolness and moe), but also because she’s the perfect embodiment of all that I love about tsunderes.

Since the Shana light novels have just ended, I wonder how the final season of the anime will hold up. With this new plot of Yuji having disappeared, I’m sure the series will bring out the best in its intriguing fantasy and romance for the big finale. Even though I have trouble keeping track of all the fictional terms and large cast of characters, I look forward to seeing my favorite flaming tsundere in all her anime glory one last time!

Oh, and the Shana III opening, “Light my fire” by Kotoko, is awesome. My favorite of the season! =D

Digimon Xros Wars: Toki wo Koeru Shonen Hunter-tachi
Episodes 1-2 so far

The first season of Digimon Xros Wars was too childish for me to rate it highly. The recently finished second season however, was much better and brought out the more mature themes and character development that made the old Digimon series so great. Two episodes into season 3 of Xros Wars now…and I’m not sure about it yet. First of all, the whole concept of “hunting” and catching digimon as if they were pokemon came out of nowhere and was not present in the previous two Xros Wars seasons. The digimon joined up with Taiki and co. of their own volition, usually to achieve similar goals. But in this new season, they’re just catching digimon without even getting to know them, which pretty much defeats the concept of previous seasons that digimon are sentient creatures who can think and use language just like humans. In episode 1 it seemed like Tagiru and the other hunters went onto MetalTyranomon’s territory, where he didn’t seem to be causing any trouble for anyone, and captured him against his will. And in episode 2, nobody questions Sagomon about why he’s even capturing the kids from the real world…they just fight and capture him. Not even Taiki is questioning why this “game” of hunting digimon is even going on in the first place when nothing like it existed before. So I really hope it’s explained why hunting digimon is necessary in future episode or else I’m gonna be really frustrated.

But to give the series some credit so far, the three new antagonistic characters and their digimon look like they’ll be interesting, assuming they’re not completely pushed into the background like Akari and Zenjirou were. And, like all Digimon series, I love the opening song for Xros Wars 3. Much to my pleasant surprise, the new main digimon Gumdramon is voiced by Kumiko Watanabe, who did an amazing job as Shippo in Inuyasha. I knew that voice sounded familiar! She also does the voice of Kyouko, the manager in Working’!!. Who knew?

Persona 4
Episode 1 so far

I’m not familiar with any previous Persona works so this is my first experience with the series. I can’t judge it by just one episode, but so far Persona 4 looks like it’ll be a good mystery/supernatural story. It has a cool, stylish design to it as well. The characters don’t interest me much unfortunately, but of course that could change later on. Also pleased that a lot of seiyuu I like – Kappei Yamaguchi, Rie Kugimiya, Yui Horie, and Romi Paku – have major roles in the show.

Fate/Zero
Episodes 1-2 so far

I originally didn’t plan to watch Fate/Zero since I haven’t seen Fate/Stay Night. But after hearing that Fate/Zero is actually its prequel, and seeing all the hype surrounding it, I decided to watch it. Much to my surprise, the double-length first episode had me completely engrossed. The animation is gorgeous and the fantasy setting and elements are extremely fascinating to me. Usually I have trouble following heavy fantasy shows like Fate/Zero that introduce a ton of characters and unique terminology right off the bat, but I was pleasantly surprised that I’m not having that problem much with Fate/Zero. I look forward to being one of the few fans experiencing this show without having seen Fate/Stay Night.

Fate/Zero has a beautiful opening, definitely my second favorite after Shana’s.

Mirai Nikki
Episode 1 so far

From just one episode I can tell that Mirai Nikki is going to be a good and suspenseful mystery/supernatural series. It shares a similar plot with Eden of the East in that a group of people (who are slowly revealed as the series goes on) are competing in a mysterious “game” of life and death with their cell phones as their main link to the game. Our two main characters, Yukiteru and Yuno, seem interesting so far, and I look forward to seeing the many yet to be introduced characters. I have a feeling that unpredictability and suspense will be a driving point for this series.

———-

In addition to these eight shows, I’m planning to watch the two upcoming Noitamina anime, Un-Go and Guilty Crown. Though now I’m wondering if I should since I’m watching so many fall ’11 shows already, and depending on how many turn out to be two cour (already know Mirai Nikki, Shana, and Bakuman 2 are) I might not have any time for winter series. I’m still watching Penguindrum too, and Bleach is finally out of fillers so I’ll be picking that up again. Sigh, so much anime, not enough hours in the day XD

No Comments… read them or add your own.

  1. Justin says:

    Just make hours. I guess!

But yeah, your selection’s pretty good. Boku Wa seems like it can get better, and I liked its first episode too (I skipped Ep. 0). You haven’t gotten a chance to watch Chihayafuru?

    • Yumeka says:

Yeah, I was maybe gonna add Chihayafuru at first but now that I have all of these shows, I just don’t have the time. But now I’m thinking that I might pick it up instead of one of the two Noitamina anime…we’ll see.

  2. Toonleap says:

I am watching NONE of the series this season…Why? Well….Lighting struck my neighborhood and my PC does not work anymore. I am now looking for a new PC and hope I can get a good one before this season ends.

I managed to get the first episode of Fate / Zero and it was great. Thanks to you, I noticed that Shana began…Wow, How I missed that?…Wait a minute…I am missing this season….Darn!

  3. Anchen says:

Fate/Zero and Persona will also be 2 cour at the least. I’m actually surprised how many long series are starting at the same time it seems, at least among shows I want to watch.

  4. Akasen says:

May I recommend taking a venture into Visual Novels and taking a look at Kara no Kyoukai? Visual Novel wise, I am of course talking about Fate/Stay Night. You may enjoy reading it if you come to enjoy Fate/Zero.

As for Kara no Kyoukai, it is a series of movies based upon Natsu Kinoko’s (writer for Type-Moon) older Light Novel works superbly adapted into film. The animation studio is ufotable, same studio doing Fate/Zero, with music done by Yuki Kajiura and the band Kalafina.

Personally, my anime watching is now down to Fate/Zero, Bakuman, Nurarihyon, and the upcoming Lupin the Third anime. I am not very big into anime as I am manga so my anime watching tends to be limited to what my peers are giving major hype towards and what manga I am really into.

    • Myna says:

I believe she’s already seen Kara no Kyoukai.

      • Akasen says:

You can probably tell how long someone has been following a blog when they don’t know things like that. >_> Search button keeps failing me.

Upon doing research, I finally found a list of anime she watched. Yeah, it’s on there. And many others. I all of a sudden feel like I stepped into a world where the floor is cotton candy. Is the floor edible?

        • Yumeka says:

Yes, I have seen the Kara no Kyoukai movies. I haven’t written any posts about them though so don’t feel bad about not being able to figure that out using the search feature.

I have a link to MyAnimeList on the side bar, as well as a more condensed, less updated list of all the anime I’ve seen on the About the Blogger page.

I doubt I’ll have motivation to actually play visual novels, but I do plan to watch the Fate/Stay Night anime after I finish Fate/Zero.

          • Akasen says:

I would personally urge you to take a look into the visual novels. While Fate/Stay Night doesn’t have the same reputation to my knowledge, the Tsukihime’s anime adaptation is so hated that fans joke that there is no Tsukihime anime.

It’s a simple matter of having a game that has multiple outcomes and the anime attempts to use one outcome mainly while smashing parts of the plots of the others with it.

  5. Myna says:

The elitist in me is really emerging this season. I’m going to be incredibly busy these next few months, so I’ve gotta cut back.

Don’t worry, the Fate terminology is pretty easy to pick up on. Zero is already leagues ahead of Stay night. I’ve got a lot of hope in Urobuchi Gen.

Persona 4 is very stylish indeed. It played out pretty generically, but I can forgive it. I hope there’s some good character development, because everyone was pretty stereotypical.

I’m already thankful for Mirai Nikki because of Yuno the yandere. Speaking of which, her seiyuu could sound pretty irritating at times. I hope Yukiteru becomes more than just another Ganta/Clain clone. But this definitely has one of the more interesting stories of the season.

Can’t wait for the noitaminA shows. Glad to hear you’re enjoying everything so far~

    • Yumeka says:

I’m interested in how I’ll view Fate/Stay Night after seeing Fate/Zero, since most people have seen the former first.

I agree about Persona 4 being stylish but with bland characters thus far. Style alone isn’t enough to win me over though, so if the characters don’t get more appealing soon, it’s gonna be a long haul with that show.

  6. Kal says:

Oh, I’m behind on this season! I’ve seen Shana (and like it), but haven’t seen the others… I need to catch up! I’ve just been downloading like crazy. The ones that I’ve seen so far are:

C3 sounds interesting, the fan service is not over the top, but the plot so far is a bit unoriginal. Still looks pretty fun, but not something I would recommend just yet. Nothing jumps out and screams “watch me!!” yet.

Kimi to Boku also seems kind of fun. High-school/slice of life. Could be fun, but nothing out of the ordinary either.

I would have to recommend Tamayura Hitotose. I watched the first episode, and it was simply charming! It seems one of those nice and soft anime, like Aria, Meiro no Croisse, etc. I really liked it and if you have a chance, check it out :)

I have to see Persona 4, I’m a huge fan of the Persona JRPGs, so I have to check it out. Same with Fate/Zero. I can’t believe I’m falling behind :S too many titles at one time :(

    • Yumeka says:

Don’t worry, you’ll catch up in due time. Glad you’re enjoying Shana at least ^_^

I was thinking about Kimi to Boku, but then I wasn’t hearing good things about it – it sounded like a mediocre slice-of-life comedy with male moe characters instead of female. I’m curious if it gets better though so let me know =) I’m also curious how Persona 4 compares to the game.

  7. If Working’!! has more episodes like the latest one, I will be estatic as that was by far my favorite in the entire series. I don’t think I’ve laughed as much as I did prior for a single episode. The balance between characters was great. Inami isn’t a character I’m fond of, so having less focus on her appeals to me. I did love Popular’s line “Takanashi’s rubbing off on her!” My only complaint is that I miss the between skit stills from last season. Their absence feels off.

Haganai looks decent. I can’t really get a grasp on my full opinion until we get through a full novel and become introduced to more characters. I didn’t watch the OVA as it was intended for novel readers, not new fans. So far it’s not living up to what I hoped it’d be, but that could change.

I look forward to starting Shana this weekend with Skorp. I’m curious about the series and look to join everyone soon.

And finally, I’m so glad you’re watching Mirai Nikki. It’s going to be a fun fun fun ride seeing the non-manga readers’ reactions every week. Yuno alone is worth the price of admission, but we soon meet some interesting characters. I’m pleased thus far with the presentation, but the next couple of weeks should tell how they’ll adapt the rest of the series.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with shows, then skip notamin this season. You can always return/catch up next season if there’s not many interesting shows.

    • Yumeka says:

I honestly didn’t notice anything special with the second episode of Working’!!. But that’s great that you enjoyed it so much =D I hope the rest continue to please!

I think you’ll like Shana. Its fantasy elements are similar to Index but I personally think the characters, themes, and many things about it are better. I’m curious if you’ll find yourself comparing the two.

One of the reasons I’m watching Mirai Nikki is because I know you think very highly of it =) I’m glad you’ll be keeping me updated on how it compares to the manga.

  8. Artemis says:

I have to say I don’t really like what I’ve seen of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. It’s true, it could grow into something more than an ecchi harem-type show, but judging by the OP, I’m not sure how likely that is. And although it’s listed as a comedy show, most of what went on just didn’t seem that funny to me. I’m also not a fan of the lipstick-style character designs – although that’s just a personal taste thing, and maybe a lot of other people like it.

    • Yumeka says:

I’ve noticed that a lot of anime are listed as comedy shows even if they’re only funny once in a while (at least on sites like MAL and ANN). I didn’t think the first episode was that funny either, but the series’ humor is likely to revolve around character-driven antics, which would require us to get to know the characters first.

As for the ecchiness, yeah, I agree that the OP makes it look ecchi. Having no knowledge of the content of the novels, I’ll just have to wait and see if it gets better or worse.

  9. Absolute Zero Now says:

Out of these, I am only watching Fate/Zero. This would actually be my first time watching a show via simulcast(OK, technically Crunchyroll is a week behind NicoNico, but I can actually use CR from my phone. I am not going to try to do a workaround to watch NicoNico on my phone). The first episode was clearly well-done in animation, art and pacing. I have a feeling this may join Haruhi and Kami Nomi(aka TWGOK) in my top 5 favorite shows. I have never seen Fate/Stay Night although I might consider getting the Visual Novel if I can manage to get it in English.

I really hope Shana gets a re-release so I could consider watching that. After all, I do like Noizi Itoh’s character designs.

    • Yumeka says:

Glad you’re enjoying Fate/Zero so much ^_^ Also glad to know someone else who’s watching it without having seen Fate/Stay Night first.

I’m sure you could find the out-of-print Geneon Shana DVDs on ebay or a similar site, though I have no idea what kind of price they’re going for. I don’t even think the now four year old Shana II even got an English release. I too hope another licensing company comes along and re-releases the series.

      • Absolute Zero Now says:

I think Funimation has the license for Shana II, and I don’t know if Funi let the license for the first Shana series expire or if they still have it. I know that Funi is also taking a very long time to tell us when they’ll release Railgun(and the Index seasons). I am hoping I get some Railgun news soon.

Yeah, I heard that DEEN’s animation on F/SN wasn’t that great, and that the VN is much better, but I’ll consider looking for the anime too.

  10. Knee House says:

A lot of male-oriented action & comedy! I admit while a couple of these shows intrigue me (P4, Mirai Nikki) & I’ll continue to watch Working!!, it is two shows not mentioned that I’m really looking forward to: Chihayafuru & Tamayura ~Hitotose~.

The combination of the former’s art & fascinating female lead has really attracted my attention, and it’s shoujo sensibilities is a nice change of pace (some have referred to Chihayafuru as a shoujo Hikaru no Go). Meanwhile, The latter promises to bring more of the iyashi-kei goodness promised by its OVA, and as someone who loved Aria & enjoyed Tamayura I’m really looking forward to the fulfillment of that promise!

I hope you’re able to find the time to enjoy the shows you’re committing to & that the Fall season may be another promising one. Thank you for sharing your very helpful 1st impressions–they’re sincerely appreciated!

    • Yumeka says:

Thanks for the thank you ^_^

I was considering Tamayura to get my dose of soothing anime and Chihayafuru for a dose of shojo, but I just don’t have time for anymore right now. But depending on my first impressions of the upcoming Noitamina anime, I may replace them with one of the two…we’ll see.

  11. eternia says:

Wow, we have the same taste. Shana AND Fate/Zero’s opening songs are definitely my favorite this season. Oath Sign is pretty cool and well matched the anime. Lit my Fire is very good for being live concert alike. I loved it when there are audience screaming “WooooW” as well.
    :-)

    • Yumeka says:

I was somewhat disappointed with openings and endings for the last couple of seasons. But already fall ’11 openings like Shana’s and Fate/Zero’s are making up for it ^_^

I too love the background chorus in “Light my fire.” So awesome!

  12. Marina says:

I’m surprised to not see Chihayafuru on your list. It looks to be a great drama, mixed with some excellent card competition >.< Though, I have to agree with you that it'll be hard to fit in all these great fall shows into a manageable schedule. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this season so far!

    • Yumeka says:

Lots of people have been recommending Chihayafuru so I might start watching it if one of the upcoming Noitamina series fails to impress me. I don’t know why I tend to shy away from anime that revolve around sports or games of some sort, especially ones I’m not familiar with (like karuta). I’ll be sure to make an announcement on Twitter if I decide to pick up Chihayafuru after all.

  13. Cytrus says:

I’ll just repeat everyone recommending Chihayafuru (and also Tamayura ~Hitotose~, based on the ova, which was as climatic as Meikoku Meiro or more).

I thought Persona was horribly bad, with wooden dialogue and character faces. It radiates the game-feel though, so it might be a real treat to fans of the original.

Shows to look out for are probably Mirai Nikki and Fate-Zero. I love my backstabbing bastards and mind-games. The number of promising shows this season exceeded my expectations, so I might end up dropping Shinryaku!? Ika Musume and/or Working!! for the time being despite watching the first seasons.

    • Yumeka says:

Heh, I found the initial story setup of Persona 4 kind of intriguing, but I agree the characters were uninteresting. Hopefully they become more memorable down the line than they are now.

  14. Relic says:

I can guarantee you, after having read the manga,Boku Wa is a genuinely good show not FOUNDED upon fan-service though it is there mildly(what show doesn’t have it?). I’d HIGHLY recommend taking a look at Tamayura Hitose and Chihayafuru, they’re my seasonal favorites along with Persona 4 and Boku Wa so far.

  15. Anime Games says:

The animation is near movie-like, the studio of this series is Ufotable after all. After watching the sequel I wasn’t disappointed by the animation. Compare it to other TV series, Fate/Zero’s animation is by far much greater and detailed.

  16. Cirris says:

After seeing UN-GO and Guilty Crown, I get the feeling GC looks like it might be the better suspenseful series. Even though the protagonist seems to be rather typical in most shonen stories, the storytelling seemed rather well done. I enjoyed how they merged the music into the action sequence at the beginning. The characters are well designed and the animation seems smooth. It seems to have a better overall feel with the characters, story, and animation.

As for the UN-GO episode, the storytelling was rather weak. Everything felt so abrupt and unfocused. The plot to the episode didn’t excite me at all. It’s not horrible; it’s just that it really didn’t do anything for me. It’s not all that great visually and the characters lacked substance to them. I couldn’t really get behind any of them at all.

    • Cirris says:

      oh as for other series.

      I’m watching

Shana final: cause, I like red heads. :P

Boku ha tomodachi: It seems like an ok story. It does have the potential of turning into a crappy harem.

C3: was going to drop it, but the second episode really changed the vibe for the better.

Maji de watashi: cause, I can. It seems like it could be a good mix of action and ecchi comedy.

Persona 4: Everyone seems to rave about the series, and the first episode seemed interesting enough.

Chihayafuru: weird story, the main characters seem rather eccentric and interesting. I like the interactions between them. It seems very real.

      may pick up

Fate/zero: There’s a lot of buzz about it, but the first episode didn’t really excite me. I may let 5 episodes play out and marathon them for a second look.

Working!!: might just marathon this at the end.

      dropped

Maken Ki: it’s crap harem. The male protagonist seems a bit scummy too.

Mashiro-iro: I might pick it back up if i read good reviews from later episodes. The first episode seemed rather blah.

  17. Marow says:

This season is a bit lackluster compared to the others this year, though there has only been one episode in some of the shows.

  18. Rustle says:

    Guilty Crown
    Mirai Nikki
    Last Exile
    Chihayafuru
    Ben-To
