The Anime Preference Survey (2010 edition)

The fourth installment of an anime survey I’ve been conducting since 2006…

The Anime Preference Survey is a survey about your general preferences in different aspects of the fandom, particularly your favorites among certain titles and categories, or other anime-related tastes you have.

So far, I’ve posted this survey three other times, from 2006 to 2008, adding new questions and updating old questions. I received around 200 participants each time, which of course is not nearly enough to make any grand generalizations about the fandom, but it definitely offers some worthwhile statistics. I didn’t get around to making a 2009 edition since I was busy with school for the first half of that year, and reviving my blog from its hiatus in the second half. So I figured its time for a 2010 version =)

Click here to take the survey.

UPDATE 08/12/10:

The survey has been deactivated and the results are in. You can see the results here. Thanks for participating! I’ll consider everyone’s suggestions for the next survey!

There are 22 questions (plus a bonus one), but I don’t require you to answer all of them (I would like it if you did, though). The survey shouldn’t take more than ten minutes, especially if you know your tastes in anime real well.

As usual, I’m always looking to improve the survey for next year. If you find any errors, or if you have suggestions for new questions or additional answers to current questions, please leave a comment =) You can also see the results of the past surveys here.

I’ll post the results of this survey within a month. I’m hoping to get more participants this year. Enjoy~

  1. Heinsia says:

    – I think all the options for this answer are rather biased and limited.
    14. When you’re talking with people who don’t like or are ignorant about anime, how do you act?
They make it sound like the person who answers this is either a passionate crazy anime fan or too shy/embarrassed and tries to hide it.
You should include a more neutral option like “Casually saying you’re an anime fan and leave it at that”.

    – 20. When it comes time to spend money on anime, what do you usually buy…
Why is manga and games are listed when the question is about anime? Or do you mean otaku stuff in general?

  2. Yumeka says:

    @ Heinsia

Hmm, I guess you’re right about question 14. I’ll definitely change it next time.

As for question 20, I mean anything related to anime. There’s no doubt that manga and anime are related, for example, you want to buy the manga of an anime series you like. For games, you may want to buy a game that’s based on an anime you like, or vice versa. Or you might like video games from Japan because of their anime characteristics.

  3. 2DT says:

Done. Question 1 needs a DDL option.

    Looking forward to the results!

  4. Yumeka says:

    @ 2DT

Ah yes, direct downloading would be a good addition to question 1. I’ll add it next time. Thanks for your input =)

  5. Canne says:

An interesting and fun survey. One thing though, I think you should ask the voters about their details like their gender/age/country/income as well so you get clearer picture of the results. Just a thought :)

  6. Yumeka says:

    @ Canne

    Thanks, glad you liked it~

The problem with asking things like gender, age, country, etc., is that the survey program I’m using (which is extremely basic) won’t show me any correlation between these things and other choices, for example, it won’t point out that more females picked a certain anime as their favorite more often than male – it will only show how many females took the survey and how many males took it. I don’t know about income, but age and country might still be interesting to add for next time even if I can’t see their connection to the rest of the answers. We’ll see =)

  7. ~xxx says:

it’s not really bad at all, but I think the 14th question is rather hard for it is really few people(?) in our place really like anime… they are much into local drama or made by koreans.

so I think, it needs a revision.

  8. Odin Force says:

Also for the 14th question, I would rather answering “Passionately proclaim your interest in anime and try to ‘convert’ the people into anime viewers, even if it backfires sometimes…”.

  9. Yumeka says:

    @~xxx and @ Odin Force

Thanks, I’ll definitely revise question 14 next time =)

  10. Mikoto says:

Question 13 needed something of an “other” option. I found myself picking Disgaea because it was the closest of all the choices that I liked best.

  11. Yumeka says:

    @ Mikoto

Sure, I’ll add an “Other” option for question 13 next time. I’m not much of a gamer so I wasn’t sure if I listed all the major series.

  12. Glo says:

Umm, yea, I noticed a problem….a HUGE problem….WHERE WAS CHATMONCHY!???? I HAD TO CHOOSE DO AS INFINITY FOR QUESTION 19!!!!!!

At least you had Rie Kugimiya involved in the seiyu, or I would have torn you a new one…

I eagerly await the results with open arms and open eyes…yeah.

  13. Yumeka says:

    @ Glo

I’ve never heard of Chatmonchy. Have they done some anime songs? Guess I’ve just never seen the series’ that they’ve done songs for.

Heh, there’s no way I could forget Rie Kugimiya XD Not only does she do voices for many characters I like, she’s also one of the most talked about seiyuu (ranked #2 on MAL, second only to Aya Hirano).

  14. Kinda weird for the games one since I delve into a wide variety of RPGs. I just play those that are good, regardless of franchise :p

Also, glad to see Monster on that list. Still my favorite show since I finished it.

  15. Yumeka says:

    @ zzeroparticle

Thanks for the input, I will definitely revise the game question next time.

I almost wasn’t going to put Monster on the list but I’m glad I did =) Afterward I felt like I should have added Mushishi too, but perhaps next time.

  16. Glo says:

    @ Yumeka

    2nd!? BLASPHEMY. As for Chatmonchy…

    DaiDai from Bleach ED
    Shangri-la from Hataraki Man

So they aren’t technically made specifically for the anime, but still……….

  17. Linnie says:

How dare you make me choose between Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist! That left me emotionally scarred :S

  18. Yumeka says:

    @ Linnie

Sorry XD That’s why I let participants skip any of the questions if they can’t choose or if they don’t have an opinion.

  19. Yi says:

Fun survey. Some of the choices between anime were kind of hard.

  20. #2 – you should add Doraemon in there too! I was looking for that when filling the survey but it was not there:(

#11 – Ghost in the Shell in not in the list? It would be a little easier if you could list the names either alphabetically or by director. Currently it takes about 2-3 looking down the list to find the anime. This also go for the other anime list questions…

Another question you could ask is the range of money they spend on anime-related stuffs:) Also, favourite directors would be interesting (or you could even list the directors and ask who they recognize! A few (Miyazaki, Anno) would come top but it would be interesting to see how well-known certain anime directors are among the fans)

That was a fun poll to do anyway. Look forward to seeing the results!

  21. Yumeka says:

    @ aquablueswater

I didn’t add Doraemon because most English-speaking fans are not familiar with it, though it’s a cultural icon in Japan. But now I see that some, especially those who come from a Japanese family, might be. So I’ll add it next time =)

Alphabetically sounds good for next time since I don’t know much about anime directors. And asking about money spent on anime sounds like a possibility.

    Thanks for the feedback~

  22. Nazarielle says:

Could use some updating on the seiyuu, where’s my Itou Kanae :< Didn't see Satou Rina or Itou Shizuka either. Surprised Hidamari Sketch wasn't on the next to last or whichever it was about favorite popular anime, though I guess it's not that popular.

  23. Yumeka says:

    @ Nazarielle

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about adding Shizuka Itou, but then I thought I had too many already and she wasn’t as popular as others. But I’ll look into adding her and the other two you mentioned next time.

  24. Hana says:

    Hi Yumeka,

I was alerted to this via EO’s recent 1 year anniversary post and the subsequent comments section. Just completed the survey, which was both fun and informative (i.e. I now have a few more additions to my ‘things to check out’ list, so thanks for that!). In terms of feedback, I too think it would benefit from an ‘in between’ option in Q.14 (i.e. in between the ‘I would say I liked it, but wouldn’t go into detail’ option and the ‘passionately proclaim…’, so for me I would go into detail and try and educate/ convert the person I’m speaking with). Also, for the seiyuu options, I would have marked the box by Marina Inoue, if she had been included…

Thanks again – it was fun! :)

  25. lurker says:

Just passing by – the question that bothered me the most was the genre question. For a start, shounen and shoujo are demographics, not genres, and should probably have been the focus of a separate question. You can have shounen action series, shounen romantic comedies, shounen horror, etc. Similarly, you can have shoujo romance, shoujo comedy (which may not have romance – think all-male cast shows like Princess Princess), and shoujo slice-of-life like Natsume Yuujinchou. Seinen and josei are also important demographics, and it was disappointing that they weren’t included.
