So it’s my birthday today…

This is actually the first post I’ve written on my birthday even though I’ve had the blog for my past three birthdays. Since this particular year has been pretty eventful for me (and for want of something better to write about at the moment), I decided to give it ago…

I was never one to be shy about my age; I turn 24 today. Almost hit the quarter of a century mark. As I’ve actually already discussed on my New Year’s post, the 23rd year of my life has been quite eventful – graduating college, going to Japan for a second time, getting a part-time job, and watching and blogging about anime more than ever. This is my first birthday in the past two decades where I’m no longer a student, but rather, as the Japanese call it, a “shakaijin” (person in society). The job I have now is a good way to get things going until I find a better path for my life to take.

You don’t realize how old you’re getting unless you hang out with people much younger than you. The job I have involves working with elementary school kids who have unwittingly forced me to contemplate how things nowadays are different than when I was growing up in the 90s. Computers and Internet, cable TV, DVDs, and technologically advanced video games are now commonplace for almost every kid’s household. Unfortunately, with all the instant gratification and endless wildness that these things offer, many kids nowadays have the attention spans of gnats. This, together with the terrible Los Angeles school system, makes me tremble when I think of where all these kids will go in the overpopulated, poor economy and what will become of the next generation that I’ll probably be dependent on when I’m a senior citizen.

But! Don’t need to worry about that now. I’m only 24 and there’s many more years for things to change. Hopefully the change for me, and for the world, will be for the better.

My family basically consists of just me and my mom, and since I’m not a party person at all, we’re just gonna celebrate by going out to dinner with a friend. My main birthday treat is going to Six Flags tomorrow. Haven’t been there since 2004 so I’m looking forward to it =)

Happy birthday man. I turn 27 and I have yet to graduate this year. Sad. I may still live with my parents, but yeah, I wonder where I am going in life too. Maybe I could go over to Japan and teach English. :p

  2. Yumeka says:

    @ Panther

Thanks, good luck with your endeavors, too (and I’m a girl, by the way).

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a wonderful 24th year of life!

I’m turning 21 this year, was working for the last 6 months. Going to university in October, and I shudder at the prospect of what I will have to face after I finish university. I hope it doesn’t turn out to be as bad as I think it will be.

I don’t really think the younger generations have lower attention spans, its all about what they are interested in. If interested they can be attentive, if not they wont.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! =D Have a great time at Six Flags tomorrow!

Happy Birthday! I’m turning 25 this year, myself. What’s weird about this is that I’m constantly reminded of how old I’m getting (because I’m constantly around younger people due to my brother and sister), and how young I still am (because most of my co-workers are at least a decade older than I am, haha).

    @ Vagish

Kids don’t usually have enough experience yet to take up an interest in anything besides what they’re exposed to, which is, as I’ve described it, different than my time. The kinds of fast-paced things they’re exposed to don’t warrant long attention spans, thus it makes it even more difficult for them to focus in school, at least from my experience in public schools. A genuine interest in learning is getting harder to come by.

Thanks for the b-day wishes =)

    >w> You’re doin’ a hella lot better than me… I’m turning 21 in July and havenot even started college |3 If all goes well, I should be starting in a couple months, though.

Anyhow, I wish you best and hope you have fun at dinner and SixFlags! <3

  11. 誕生日おめでとう!

    happy b-DAY~!!

  13. A belated happy birthday! Hope you had a good one.

I’m a year older, but I’ll be entering that shakaijin phase myself after an internship this summer. Pretty daunting stuff for someone who’s basically been a student his whole life, heh. Well, unless I decide to run screaming back into the comforting arms of university life for a few more years and get a doctorate so I can teach college-level courses.Sounds like you survived the transition pretty well, even if you’re thinking of getting into something else later on.

    6 flags? which one?
    magic mountain?
last time I went to magic mountain I went on so many roller coasters I was dead bored by the end of the day xD
    happy birthday

  15. Yumeka says:

    @ Prooof

Yeah, Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA. I just got back a couple of hours ago actually, and I had a blast XD I don’t see how you could get bored there. With the lines, it could take all day to go on all the coasters, and you can always go on some rides more than once (check out the games and shops, too).

  16. Little Samurai says:

Happy Birthday! Sooooo sorry (x100) that I didn’t say this earlier!

  17. 2DT says:

I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date. But hopefully you’re still accepting well wishes.

    Happy birthday!
