12 moments of anime 2009: #2 Haruhi season 2

Continuing with my 12 moments of anime for 2009 (in order of significance to me personally), here’s #2:

Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #2: Haruhi season 2

I think Haruhi season 2 (a.k.a. Haruhi 2009) has been on just about everyone’s 12 moments list this year, some favorably, some not so favorably, and some in between. While most people have just “Endless Eight” on their list, I decided to have the whole season in general on my list, 1) because I’m a big Haruhi fan, and 2) there was no other season quite like it.

First of all, unless I missed something, I don’t think the new episodes were ever officially announced (only that there will be a rebroadcast). Fans were ecstatic on May 21st when “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody” aired. But who the heck could have predicted that a few weeks later the highly anticipated new season would sink into the infamous endless summer fiasco? Am I the only one who thinks that the Haruhi anime should get some kind of Guinness Book of World Records for such a troll (and for all its past trolls for that matter)? Others have already said just about everything that needs to be said about “Endless Eight” on their 12 moments.

After the endlessness is finally over, we get “The Sigh,” which most fans agree is the weakest of the Haruhi novels. Having read all the novels myself, I agree with that, though many liked it simply because it was not “Endless Eight,” and it had some good parts too. Besides “Endless Eight” and ‘Kyon-kun, denwa,’ the scene where Kyon almost punches Haruhi got a lot of attention too.

So was Haruhi season 2 a major letdown? I’m a big fan of the series, which is why it’s #2 on my list, but even I was annoyed with “Endless Eight.” However, now that it’s over, I don’t feel much resentment towards it and I now think of it as yet another unique and daring attribute of the Haruhi franchise. My love for the series didn’t decrease even though I was disappointed that after waiting three years, we only got animation from three of the novel stories. But I’m still looking forward to “The Disappearance” movie and other future Haruhi anime (the long overdue volume 10 would be nice too).
