Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #3: Completing the Enies Lobby arc of One Piece

I’ve been watching the One Piece anime since 2005 and I’m still a lot behind. But a couple of months ago, I completed the most epic of One Piece story arcs – the 50 episode-long Enies Lobby arc.

Only actually watching and/or reading this arc of One Piece can show how amazing it is. It would take too long for me to write out everything that makes it such a great arc. I’ve already written a fairly lengthy essay about how this arc reflects the fascinating themes in the series – corrupt authority (the World Government, Marines, CP9) wrongly labeling the true heroes (the Straw Hats) as villains. This arc is everything that makes One Piece excellent – gut-wrenching drama, intense action, and well-timed comedy all amidst an extremely creative setting and an intricate, thrilling plot. Finally getting through this important part of the One Piece saga was quite a ride. If I didn’t already know that One Piece deserves all the popularity it gets and is much more than a kids show, the Enies Lobby arc confirms it.

You might not see this, but here goes. This moment in One Piece will forever be etched into my heart. It showed me the depths of despair…which friendship, shared values, and a a shared mission can bring us back from. Great moment.
