Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #4: Teaching a class about anime

As I’ve recently posted about, this fall I got a part time job as an enrichment teacher for the local YMCA, and one of the topics I teach about is anime (the other is Japanese). Unfortunately I’m limited to discussing only family-friendly anime because I teach elementary school kids between the ages of 5 and 10. I can’t teach about the complex, analytical aspects of anime because the kids are so young, but it’s still fun and it’s a great way to give the next generation a better understanding of anime early on in their lives. I know most of the younger kids won’t remember a lot of the stuff I talk about, but hopefully at least some of them will have fond memories of the class and of anime in general. A handful of them have been particularly interested in my lessons and are into Pokemon, Naruto, Bakugan, etc., so maybe they’ll become anime fans like me when they get older =D Most of the staff members I work with don’t know much of anything about anime other than it’s “stuff that kids like nowadays.” So in addition to the kids, I’m also hoping to give adults a better understanding as well.
