Continuing with my 12 moments of anime for 2009 (in order of significance to me personally), here’s #6:

Twelve Anime Moments of 2009: #6: Kemono no Souja Erin

Out of the many anime I’ve watched this year, Kemono no Souja Erin has been one of the best, if not the best, and unfortunately it’s also the most underrated. I think a lot of people look at its art style and assume it’s just a dispensable kid’s show. Or they watch only the first couple of episodes, before the plot truly develops, and think that it has nothing else to offer. But from what I’ve seen, those who have watched it to episode 7 or later know what an amazing series it becomes. The last two episodes of this 50 episode show haven’t yet come out, but even if the ending is weak, almost every other episode has been fantastic and woven together in a near perfect narrative, so I doubt my opinion of it will change much at this point.

I’ve already written a post about why Kemono no Souja Erin is so underrated, so check there if you want to know more. I plan to write a full review of it in the coming weeks when it finishes airing. But all I’ll say for now is that if you want to watch a family-friendly but not intelligence-insulting show that tells a beautiful, unique story and doesn’t fan pander at all, give Kemono no Souja Erin a chance up to at least episodes 7 to 10. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
