Nine recent and remarkable AMVs

I always like to keep track of the most highly-rated AMVs. A little over a year ago I wrote a post featuring fifteen AMVs that I thought were the best. Since then, I’ve come across a few more, mostly excellent 2009 releases, that I feel deserve some praise too…

Resonant Discord by Chiikaboom

Featured anime: Soul Eater

The best Soul Eater AMV I’ve seen so far. Awesome editing, high-speed action, and nice color blending and music syncing.

Radiance by Radical Yue

Featured anime: various

Beautiful AMV. Soothing and gentle without being too slow-paced. Good variety of anime and blending skills. Sorry the above video is such poor quality. You can download the good quality version on animemusicvideos.org.

Attack of the Otaku by Chiikaboom

Featured anime: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Ouran High School Host Club

A 2008 AMV that I almost featured in my previous AMV post, but I didn’t fully appreciate it until I watched it a few more times. The high-speed editing is absolutely amazing. The colors, blending characters together, the timing with the words of the song – everything about this AMV is excellent. It goes so fast and there’s so much going on, it’s probably not safe to play on deteriorating computers =P

Project Elysium by various editors

Featured anime: various

Project Elysium, together with INAMIX below, are two amazing MEP (Multi-Editor Project) AMVs that came out this year. They feature a medley of many different tracks by various editors all blended together brilliantly. INAMIX uses up-beat j-pop songs while Project Elysium uses techno instrumental pieces. But both utilize awesome editing skills and a wide variety of anime and styles. The above video is the first 10 minutes of this 20 minute long AMV.

INAMIX by various editors

Featured anime: various

Like Project Elysium, INAMIX is an MEP combining 34 tracks by 34 different editors. It uses a variety of anime and a variety of j-pop songs. The above video is just one of the many 34 tracks in this 15 minute AMV. I don’t think the entire AMV is available anywhere except download from animemusicvideos.org.

Noise by Planetside Studios

Featured anime: various

One of the most highly-rated AMVs of 2009. Beautiful, emotional, and slightly haunting.

———-

The Harassment of Kyon by MysteriousRyder

Featured anime: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Another 2008 AMV that is still one of the most hilarious I’ve ever seen. It won eight awards at eight different anime conventions including AX ’08 and Otakon ’08. Gotta watch it if you haven’t already. You don’t even have to be a Haruhi fan to appreciate its humor XD

Sunlight by DZ-Studios

Featured anime: Eureka 7

The best Eureka 7 AMV, especially for Renton+Eureka goodness. Uses some of the most gorgeous scenes from the series.

———-

Empty Motion by Nikolakis

Featured anime: variuos

And last but definitely not least, a hyper and hilarious AMV featuring scenes from 75 different anime and Aya Hirano’s catchy song “Love Gun.” A few slightly ecchi scenes but other than that it’s pretty brilliant.

Wow, some of those are fantastic. My favorites were Noise and The Harassment of Kyon.

And hey, I have some Haruhi questions. I see a lot of anime with my little brother by downloading episodes and putting them on our iPods; we’ll watch them on our own time and then discuss later. Obviously I won’t ever give him episodes of yaoi/GTO/etc, but he really enjoys romantic comedies like Clannad, Kanon, Ouran, Sola, Tenshi na Konamaiki… you get the point. Is Haruhi something that a fourteen-year-old boy can enjoy? Although I saw enough of the show to get the gist, I never got swept into the MoHS/Lucky Star craze, so I have no idea. o.O

My second question is about the order. I’m a serious otaku so the order won’t really bother me, but since I’ll be maybe watching it with my brother, do you recommend that I see them in the original, mixed up order, or try to see them chronologically?

  2. Yumeka says:

    @ Saere

In response to your questions, I think your brother would like Haruhi if he likes those other shows. I think it has more universality than Lucky Star because of its style and sci-fi elements, while Lucky Star is composed of stream of conscious humor targeted exclusively at Japanese otaku.

And yes, I recommend watching the episodes in chronological order. And you should skip at least 5 of the “Endless Eight” episodes XD

  3. Saere says:

Thank you very much! And yes; I already know that he won’t understand things like the Phoenix Wright jokes in Haruhi, but god, nothing can be as “otaku” as Lucky Star. XD He couldn’t stand to finish even one episode of that. I only made it through two before deciding that it was too much effort to watch when there were better shows out there. We moved on to Toradora– a decision I am very happy I made. That show rocked.
