My 100 favorite anime characters (50 – 41)

I’ve reached the halfway mark on the countdown of my 100 favorite anime characters. Here are characters 50 to 41. I just noticed that out of the ten characters on today’s list, six of them are not human XD (and two of those six are wolves). Not sure how that happened…

50. Kiba (from Wolf’s Rain)

Seiyuu: Mamoru Miyano

Despite being a true “lone wolf” and being more or less alone for his entire life, Kiba maintains his unfaltering determination to seek a future for himself in Paradise. He does not lament about his fate but confronts it unflinchingly. But he’s not a total loner, as he obviously cares for Cheza and the rest of his pack. His no-nonsense approach to his goal keeps him strong.

49. Kakashi Hatake (from Naruto)

Seiyuu: Kazuhiko Inoue

Back when Naruto was just starting, Kakashi was my first favorite. He’s strong and smart, has a good sense of humor, and he knows when to be serious and when to hold back. Definitely one of Konoha’s best sensei.

48. Horo (from Spice and Wolf)

Seiyuu: Ami Koshimizu

Horo’s sly and sassy demeanor, as well as her slightly ambivalent relationship with Lawrence, make her a joy to watch. Although she prides herself on being a respectable wolf deity, she is not annoyingly self-centered or boastful. In fact, over the course of the series, she let’s slip her feelings of anger, grief, and fear. I never know what the crafty yet wise Horo will do next.

47. Tailmon (from Digimon Adventure)

Seiyuu: Yuka Tokumitsu

In my opinion, Tailmon has the best character development of all the digimon in the different series. By a tragic accident, she grows up alone, is soon abused and hardened, but still manages to make at least one friend. And after much struggle, she finally finds her place. Because of her rough upbringing, she’s more mature and level-headed than the other digimon. She was my favorite digimon nearly ten years ago and still is.

And she evolves into a beautiful angel too…

46. Yakumo Tsukamoto (from School Rumble)

Seiyuu: Mamiko Noto

Yakumo is a sweetheart, plain and simple. She’s just the nicest little sister anyone could have. She’s kind, gentle, and sensitive to people’s thoughts (to the point of being able to read them) but she doesn’t get easily flustered or emotional. I still have yet to watch the rest of School Rumble beyond the first season and OVA, but I’m sure I’ll always like Yakumo.

45. Pikachu (from Pokemon)

Seiyuu: Ikue Ohtani

Pikachu’s not my most favorite pokemon, but because he’s the main representative of one of the most successful anime/game franchises ever, a franchise that has had a profound affect on me as well, I just had to include him in the list. I don’t think any Japanese anime character is as internationally well recognized as Pikachu. Although Sailor Moon was the first anime I ever watched, the Pokemon anime and games are what first set me on the road to becoming an anime fan. Pokemon’s popularity outside Japan has dwindled over the past few years, but I’ll probably always be a fan, and I’m sure Pikachu’s cute little mug will continue to be a cultural icon in Japan for years to come.

44. Konata Izumi (from Lucky Star)

Seiyuu: Aya Hirano

Konata’s uniquely eccentric otakuism has become almost legendary in the recent years of anime fandom. I find it amusing too, but what I like most about her is her funny, mischievous personality, especially in her relationship with Kagami. The hilarious exchanges between the two of them, in which Konata throws countless jabs at Kagami, who tries hard to put up a tough front against Konata’s proud otakuism, is the source of endless entertainment in Lucky Star, at least for me =P

———-

43. Hikari Yagami (from Digimon Adventure)

Seiyuu: Kae Araki

Like Tailmon, Hikari has always been my favorite character on Digimon. Even when she was just a little kid in the first season, rather than being whiny and hyper, she was already mature, sensitive, and caring beyond her years. And when she was older in the second season, she was still the most compassionate out of all the Chosen Children.

———-

42. Rukia Kuchiki (from Bleach)

Seiyuu: Fumiko Orikasa

Rukia is one of the reasons I continue to watch Bleach even though I don’t always like it. Unlike a lot of the other shinigami, she’s not obnoxious or self-absorbed. She can be tough and brave, but also fearful and vulnerable, as when Ichigo and the others had to rescue her. Her relationships with some of the other characters such as Ichigo, Orihime, Byakuya, and Renji are interesting too.

———-

41. Luna (from Sailor Moon)

Seiyuu: Keiko Han

Since Sailor Moon was the very first anime I ever watched, and Luna was always my favorite character, she’s technically my very first favorite anime character of all, so she’ll always have sentimental value to me. Yeah, I have a thing for cats, but I like her for other reasons too; even though she can be a bit bossy, she means well and cares a lot about Usagi and the others. The arguing between Usagi and Luna is the source of good humor, and Luna has some pretty hilarious moments without her too. I’ll always be a sucker for the second Sailor Moon movie, which stars Luna and reveals her emotions of love and despair.

  1. Jan Suzukawa says:

    PIKACHU IS ONLY NO. 45???

    I’m speechless. :0

  2. Yumeka says:

Well, Pikachu gets all the attention but there are 490+ other pokemon who are just as lovable =)

  3. digitalboy says:

hehehe more greats! Horo! Konata! PIKACHU! In my early, rebellious days, I dislike Pikachu because he hogged all the attention from others. Namely Bulbasaur – Bulbasaur was never one of my favorites, but I always thought it was sad that you’d see Squirtle, Charmander (my favorite), and Bulbasaur, and the other starter gets left behind.

However, I came to love Pikachu for being the badass, snarky powerhouse he is. I think it really speaks for the great writing of the original Pokemon series that Pikachu had so much personality with no real dialog.

  4. ETERNAL says:

Yakumo always seemed a bit too “perfect” to me, but hey, she’s still great :P

  5. Joanna says:

OMG KONATA! YAYZ! I LUV KONO-CHAN! GO LUCKY STAR!!

  6. sailorvenusgirl500 says:

luna is pretter as a person

  7. Ashpea Souls says:

I was surprised to see some of my favorite anime about half way through the list or almost the tail end. lol. Yet what is funny, is that most of what you have posted, i have seen and love dearly. Great list. :) Ashpea
