My fall season ’09 picks

The majority of the fall 2009 anime series are going to start airing in a few weeks, so I figured now’s a good time to decide which ones I’m interested in…

Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini (Comet of Gemini)

I watched the first season of Darker than Black a couple of years ago, but when I heard about this second season, I decided to rewatch it and refresh my memory. And I’m glad I did, ’cause I’m enjoying it more the second time around XD It’s an engrossing action/sci-fi series with great animation and an interesting plot. But I felt the first season ended rather abruptly, and my favorite character, Yin, hardly got any screen time. But it seems like Yin will be a more prominent character in the new season, and I’m looking forward to any new characters too. I wonder if season 2 will follow the “2-episode-long story arcs” structure that the first season used.

Kobato.

It’s been years since I watched a CLAMP series so I definitely want to check this one out. The story certainly sounds warm, charming, and feeling-centered like any CLAMP series. Plus it’s being produced by Madhouse and NHK, so that’s another plus =)

Natsu no Arashi! Natsu, Haru, Fuyu, Uchi

I started to really like Natsu no Arashi! during the last few episodes of the first season. So I’m looking forward to more comedic, time-traveling antics! ^^

Fairy Tail

I agree with most people that one look at this series made me think of One Piece. But hey, I like shounen series and One Piece is my favorite, so I’ll probably like Fairy Tail too as long as there’s something original about it. Also like One Piece, so far the Fairy Tail manga is looking like one of those never ending series. Not sure if I’ll stay with it all the way but we’ll see.

Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Purezza

Yet another sequel I want to watch. I really don’t know why I liked the first season of this series; it’s littered with blatant fan service, and besides the two main characters, the rest of the cast are pretty one-dimensional cliches. But it did have its exceptional episodes and good moments regardless. I guess I find the premise of a moe blob girl being a secret otaku enjoyable =P

Nyan Koi!

The only reason I’m interested in this series is because it revolves around cats =P Other than that, it looks like yet another mediocre series wrought with fetish pleasing cliches and fan service. But maybe I’m wrong. I’m expecting it to be either really funny or really dispensable.

Inuyasha: Kanketsu-hen (The Final Act)

Inuyasha fans have been pleading for nearly 5 years for a new season, and finally their wish will come true =D The manga ended a little over a year ago, so Sunrise didn’t waste much time keeping the franchise going with a new anime series. I heard that this series might only be around 26 episodes, but with 20 volumes of manga material left to cover, I wonder if it’ll be more than that. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Inuyasha was my favorite series for much of my years as an anime fan, so I will definitely watch this one =) Even though I’ve read all the manga and already know what’s going to happen, it’ll be great to see it animated and hear my beloved IY seiyuus again ^^

Winter Sonata

An anime series based on a hit Korean drama. I don’t usually get into series like this that “might as well be live-action,” but it looks like it’ll be well made.

—–

Shakugan no Shana S

I loved both previous seasons of Shana so of course I’ll be checking out this OVA. Though it’s only an OVA for now, a third season is soon to follow.

—–

Aoi Bungaku (Blue Literature)

There isn’t a lot of info about this series yet but apparently it’s going to be made up of animated renditions of four classic Japanese novels. I’m particularly interested in Kokoro by Natsume Souseki and No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai because I read these books at university. Bleach creator Tite Kubo and artists Takeshi Obata (Death Note) and Takeshi Konomo (Prince of Tennis) will be doing the character designs.

Kimi ni Todoke

Itazurana Kiss is really the only good shoujo series I’ve watched recently, so I’m hoping this one will be as good as it seems.

Macross Frontier ~Itsuwari no Utahime~

Higashi no Eden Movie 1 – The King of Eden

Two movies coming out in November based on recent anime hits. Macross Frontier totally blew me away when I watched it, and Higashi no Eden was a surprise masterpiece too. The Macross F movie is a retelling of the TV series while the Eden movie continues the story where the TV series left off.

I probably won’t end up watching/completing all of the above mentioned anime, and I’ll probably add an additional series or two depending on what people say about them once they start airing. But these are the ones I’m thinking about for now =)

No Comments… read them or add your own.

  1. 2DT says:

Kokoro’s been done, I think, way back in the 70s. But an animated version of No Longer Human? I’m both excited and repelled.

  2. Snark says:

Hmm, I can’t really get myself excited over this season. I’ve tried watching the earlier seasons Darker than Black, Nogizaka Haruka and Shana, but didn’t really get into any of them, so that leaves the sequels out. And the new stuff really doesn’t strike me as interesting =(

  3. Paranoia675 says:

Oooh, I’ll be getting into a good number of these shows too, maybe we can get together and watch some sometime, yes?

  4. Yumeka says:

    @Paranoia675

Yes, that would be fun ^^ It’s too bad we live so far from each other though =P

  5. Liza says:

I’m really excited for Inu Yasha. I hope they extend it farther than 26 episodes!
The other fall anime I’m going to watch are Tatakau Shisho because the concept of dead people as books sounds interesting.
The Sacred Blacksmith-I’m just going to watch a couple of epsidoes and see where it goes.
Letter Bee-I’ve read the manga in Shonen Jump and the world that it takes place in looks awesome. I can’t wait to see an anime version of it.
    Kobato- It’s CLAMP.
Kimi ni Todoke- This was featured in Shojo Beat before they died and I thought the premise was funny. I haven’t read any more of it but I think that’ll be okay.
11eyes- The concept behind it sounds cool but I need to watch a couple of episodes to see where it goes.
Fairy Tail-I read 3 volumes of the manga and I thought at first it was by the guy would drew One Piece. It looked cool but I never got around to reading it again.
    Winter Sonata-Dramas are fun.
Yumeiro Patissiere- I just love the mangas/animes about cooking. *hugs Kitchen Princess and Mixed Vegetables*

  6. Wow, all the series I plan to watch you plan to watch too. =D I already left a brief comment on your MAL page, but i’ll leave another for the hell of it here….

    Kobato

Being the CLAMP fangirl I am, i’m gonna be honest. When it comes to anime based on CLAMP’s works, you really haven’t missed much these past few years. The Tsubasa Chronicle anime by Bee Train was crap, the OVAs are fantastic, but you can’t really follow them unless you’ve read the manga. The xxxHolic anime was great and all, but IG shot themselves in the foot when they decided to remove the Tsubasa crossovers (which Holic needs for the whole story). Kobato’s a great pick though, the story is fairly simple and easy to follow but very cute, plus its only CLAMP’s “side project” in between their magnum opus Tsubasa/xxHolic. So you won’t have to worry about any major crossovers with either anytime soon, there will be cameos though (like characters from Chobits popping up ^^ ). It is interesting to point out that the Kobato anime will be crossing over with another series of theirs called Wish. I wasn’t crazy about that series to be honest, but according to an interview with CLAMP apparently the world of Wish is the same world of Kobato. So THAT will be interesting….

    Fairy Tail

My friend whos a One Piece fan (who got my into OP in the first place) has read part of the manga for this. She said its really great (and alot like OP). So I have high hopes for this one.

    Nyan Koi!

Wow, your’e watching it for the same reasons I am (because of the cats). Lol! Like you said, it does look like it would turn into a mediocre series with fanserivce. Who knows, maybe they will surprise us and give us something half-way decent. I’m just keeping my expectations low till I see it.

    InuYasha

Yep, still planning on this one. Though its gonna be weird hearing everyone speaking in Japanese after being used to hearing only the English dub for so long. Perhaps I should go watch one of my DVDs of the movies in Japanese as a warm up first before seeing this?
    ——
    Shakugan no Shana S

There is an extra novel titled the same, and if I remember right, i’m pretty sure what happened in that novel will be happening in this OVA. So this definately won’t be something JC Staff pulled out of their rears to make extra cash before S3 (which I hear will be the last season). Which is a good thing.

Man that was a long post….
Well these are my picks for fall. I might pick up another series if something comes along thats alot of getting attention. But I kinda doubt it, seeing how this fall will be the most series i’m watching that are currently airing in Japan at the same time as is…..

  7. Little Samurai says:

I’m very excited about the new InuYasha season. The pic with IY & Kagome looks adorable!^_^ I’m also planning to watch Darker than Black.

  8. Yumeka says:

    @ Little Samurai

Well, the fall season ’09 is over now but Inuyasha is still going on (it’s about halfway through). Darker than Black was good.
