Haruhi season 2 episode 4: Endless Eight (part 3)

The third part of Endless Eight…and it’s still not the final part…

After just about everyone expected “Endless Eight” to end this week, the way part 3 ended today, it’s pretty certain that we will be seeing part 4 next week. “Endless Eight” part 3 that aired today was very similar to part 2 from last week; after the usual summer activities, about halfway through the episode, Kyon and the others find out about the repeating summer. But in the end, as Haruhi is leaving the cafe, Kyon is once again unable to come up with the last fulfilling activity that they need to do before summer vacation ends. And like part 2, this episode again ends with a hopeless Kyon not doing his homework before going to bed while he waits for the cycle to restart.

I was really certain, and hopeful, that this would be the last part of “Endless Eight,” but apparently KyoAni has other ideas. As I stated last week, it would have made more sense for “Endless Eight” to end with 3 parts; in the first part, we don’t know about the endless summer, then in the second part we learn about it, and in the third part it finally gets resolved. I suppose repeating the “Endless Eight” story so many times has it’s good points. With so many repetitions, we get a taste of the boredom and sheer helplessness that Kyon and the others, especially Yuki, must be feeling as we too have to repeat the summer activities again and again along with them. I also think it’s clever how KyoAni comes up with subtle variations for each cycle, such as dressing everyone in different outfits and altering a few scenes, though the order of the activities and dialogue in each cycle seems to be almost the same.

But I also think that repeating “Endless Eight” beyond two parts is starting to frustrate a lot of viewers, especially those who are less patient about seeing the upcoming new episodes after waiting so long for this new season. The variations on the summer activities are tolerable, but by part 3 even a major Haruhi fan like myself is starting to get sick of them, and it was a drag having to sit through the entire explanation of the endless summer again this week XP At least there was a major difference between part 1 and part 2 of “Endless Eight,” but I don’t know what the point was of making today’s part 3 a near exact repeat of last week’s part 2. According to Yuki in the novels, they found out about but failed to stop the endless summer in 8,769 of the cycles, with the frequency of detection increasing each time, so perhaps part 3 is meant to shove this fact into our heads. Though repeating “Endless Eight” so many times may have its merits as far as reflecting the plot of the story, viewers can only take so much repetition. All I can say is that I really hope next week will be the final part of the “Endless Eight” saga. With “Endless Eight” unexpectedly taking up so many of the proposed 14 new episodes for this season, there’s gonna be some major changes with the tentative schedules floating around. My guess is that longer story arcs like The Sigh and The Disappearance will be shorter than expected and/or this season will end at an earlier point in the novels than expected.

Well, let’s hope the end of “Endless Eight” will be next ~_^

I totally agree with you xD. I’m kinda liking the new season, but if this goes on too much, they should change the name for “The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi viewers”. lol

  2. rogosk says:

Sighs beings shorter is fine by me (hell, who even liked that book?) but Dissapearance being shorter is unforgiveable

They realyl gotta wrap up Endless regardless, it’s gettign annoying

  3. reader says:

I agree. I thought endless eight part 2 was great, it made the first ep better. This one just felt like an endless spot the difference.

Big letdown here, it’s a shame that this eats up one of the spots of the new eps.

For the first half, I couldn’t tell if I had watched the right episode.

They need to resolve this next time, and make another episode to make up for this annoyingness.

Did ANYONE like this episode? God, you could get the same effect just rewatching the previous episode. What’s the point! And why did it have to take a whole episode!?! Surely they could have just done a photo montage showing it looping again, then stopping it.

    Gah.

  4. Note says:

The episode was as you said kind of a let down. It felt completely pointless considering the last episode but I’ll still be looking towards the next episode with greater anticipation than this one, hopefully this time the endless summer will end! (maybe that’s what they wanted: for more anticipation.)

As for how the rest of the series will continue… well it seems like they’re not going to make the Disappearance premire in this season. It feels to me that another reason for the Endless Summer arc is to just fill up episodes so that they can prepare for the episodes of the Sigh and finish up the series with the same episodes that finished up the last season chronologicaly (the mikuru episode 0 to someday in the rain) and leave the Disappearance episodes for another season.

Sighs… I really hope the above isn’t correct.

  5. Andrew says:

Where can you see this new episode?

  6. Sol says:

So, 14-5 (lets take it as given, that endless eight will end the next week), we still have 9 episodes for Sights and Disappearence. I would say that Sights will not last more than 2-3 ep. So we have 6-7 episodes for DoSH. If thay make it in 4-5 ep… no Snowy mountain this season, I guess.
On one hand it leaves me in dispare, on the other – there’s more material for the 3rd season. They’d better not make us watch 28 episodes before new ones.
So, all we have to do is to hope and believe that EE WILL end one day, and DoSH will be included. Remember: “Believing is more fun!”

  7. John says:

I just finished watching the 3rd endless eight. I was screaming at Kyon to remember the homework but he didn’t. I nearly cried.

They need to end it next week or bad things might happen to the studio, and if they shorten disappearance I’ll never forgive them.

  8. Yumeka says:

@Andrew: The new episode is up on YouTube now here.

@everyone else: I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing at least The Sigh and The Disappearance this season, but that might be it. I think (or at least hope) KyoAni will do a good job with The Disappearance and not rush through it, since they’ve been advertising it long before the new season even started airing.

  9. Liza says:

I didn’t like this episode at all. I really wanted to skip ahead in the episode to try to find some new content as I was watching it but I stuck with it. My sister came into my room while I was watching and I just ended up talking to her and watched without really paying attention. The next episode better be the end because I cannot take another episode of this.

  10. Haruhi Suzumiya Fan says:

    Season 2:
    Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody ep.1
    Endless Eight ep. 2,3,4,5
Sigh ep.6,7,8, could be 4 episodes?
    Disappearance ep. 9,10,11,12,13
Special ep. 14 ( Kyoani always make special episodes )

If the Last book comes out, then Kyoani might make a third season for Haruhi ,but after Haruhi S2 Kyoani will make Full Metal Panic season 4 or LuckyStar season 2 or Little Busters?

  11. Tsarina says:

This is ridiculous! How could they waste four episodes on endless eight? Two is definitely more than enough, and the fact that they hardly added anything to the third episode is just stupid. I don’t understand why they’re doing it. For one thing, in the light novel the author managed to write the story one time around while still giving the deja vu effect. I did think it was clever how Kyo Ani did the first two episodes, but the third one is ridiculous, and the fact that they’re making a forth is completely ludicrous. I know for a fact it won’t be very different from the third one.

Why did they make more than two? What kind of effect are they trying to make? I understand it creates the effect of frustration and boredom, but the fact is that the majority of viewers aren’t going to understand this and it really might bring down the reviews for this show. Also, since we’re only getting a limited number of episodes for Sighs and Disappearance, it’s completely stupid that FOUR episodes would be wasted on the same arc over and over again. Just think: if FIVE episodes are devoted to disappearance, that’s only ONE more than the number of episodes devoted to endless eight, and covering a lot more plot.

I’m so tired of this. Why couldn’t they just end it already?

  12. shinningeagle says:

    Guys…
    Its called endless eight…
    get it?
    endless EIGHT!!!!!
    buckle your patience belt up

  13. Keyfu says:

this better not b happenin for eight episodes cuz i’m dying.. gettin realli annoyed with this.. and weird how kyon was doodlin 8 on the sheet of stuff haruhi and the others had to do during the summer when they were in the café in the end.. ep 6 wasted again =(

  14. Aurelius says:

ok, so i hate watching subs, but haruhi is easily my absolute favorite anime in the world, so i decided to start watching subs. wasn’t too bad at first. then i got to this endless eight crap, and is driving me up the wall! i’ve watched episdode 2,3,4,5,6, and im watching 7 as i write this. they are all almost exactly the same! good god! im going to kill myself! i mean, i get why they’re doing this, and i do take interest in it and enjoy it to a point, but dear god, enough is enough. at the very MOST, this should have lasted three episodes only: ep 1, as it was, ep 2, as it was, ep 3, they start another cycle but remember everything and they show all the activities super fast, but with kyon trying to figure out what to do and eventually get it by the end. sadly, based on what im seeing in ep 7 right now, it looks like shinningeagle was saying. i suppose you guys probably know what happens by now though, considering that im commenting a month after you. dont give me any spoilers, but tell me if this nightmare really does last till episode 9

one more thing, if you haven’t seen this video already, it will make you feel like the whole endless eight was worth while

  15. Yumeka says:

Yes, I just watched episode 9 last night and Endless Eight is finally over. Apparently they wanted it to last 8 episodes to go with the whole “eight” theme.
