The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya novels and timeline complete!

null
I finally read through all of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels. I have to say, they’re excellent, and the dedicated translation work of Baka-Tsuki is great too. I also updated “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Chronological Timeline of Events” that I wrote a while back, complete with short summaries of later events that haven’t happened in the anime. Volume 9 was really exciting, though I was a bit confused about the two alternate scenarios (anyone know what that’s about? ~_^) Anyway, I’m eagerly anticipating Volume 10 as well as the new anime season. Once the new season airs, I’ll record the appropriate episode numbers on my timeline. And once again, if anyone want so add anything or point out any errors in my timeline, please let me know =)

UPDATE: A 2010 revised version of the timeline is now available here

There’s lots of speculations over the 9th novel. Personally, I think it may be that the two different “paths” presented correspond to two different possible timelines that diverge from a single point. Older Mikuru seemed to have suggested that something like this was going to happen soon back in the 7th novel. One such timeline leads to the future that Mikuru herself belongs to; the other timeline is the one that Fujiwara, the Sneering Bastard, desires. Kyon is probably the key to deciding which of these two timelines will become reality, and which will fade away.

Another possibility that I”ve seen presented is that the two paths are merely a time reset in a similar fashion to Endless Eight. One path is the “original”, and the other is the “alternate” that occurs after a time rewind. Sorta like Higurashi. Which one’s which is still up for debate.

I’ve never bought a light novel before – do they usually have furigana? More specifically, does haruhi have furigana? At my level of kanji knowledge it’d be rather futile for me to try reading without them… :/

  3. Yumeka says:

Interesting speculations, Mirrinus. Both sound like equally valid outcomes. But I guess we won’t get anymore clues until Volume 10 comes out. Still, I wonder if the entire Vol. 10 will continue to split the story up into two possible paths…or maybe it’ll be like that even past Vol. 10 (which also makes me wonder how many volumes are left in the series). I actually think Scenario(β) is a bit more exciting because we know more about the “enemy’s” goals. What’s interesting is that Scenario(α) seems to focus more on the “light” side of the story with the SOS Brigade’s activities and recruiting new members while Scenario(β) is focusing more on the “dark” side with the real motives of the rival esper, time traveler, etc,. That’s how it seems now but perhaps both with eventually come together later on. I still wonder who it was that called Kyon at the beginning of Scenario(α)…

And bd_, I’m not sure if the light novels have furigana or not, but my guess is that they don’t (I think it’s only in manga). So you’re probably better off reading English translations.

  4. Rol says:

    My theory?

We finally get to see the oft referred to but never revealed “other-worlder/slider”. Think about it, 2 different stories can ALSO mean 2 different dimensions, right?

With Haruhi being the way she is, I can’t IMAGINE that Sasaki could be the Slider, hence joining the SOS Brigade…..My guess it will be the “girl was listening intently to Haruhi” during Scenario(α) during the recruitment scene.

Seriously, what better way to present something big and odd, by creating a situation that is big and odd to even the reader (the two scenario situation).

  5. E Rev says:

I aggree with Rol. That was also my theory. We been getting hints of a slider coming, especially since Kyon mentioned it himself in this vol. (or was it the previous one?). Yes, that girl who was listening intently to Haruhi is quite interesting, maybe she is a slider…

  6. moi says:

man, i sure wish that i could buy and UNDERSTAND how to read.. cant read any jap for nuts..

  7. zedy says:

Interesting theorys. my theory? kyon IS the demensional slider. Actually, Im not really baseing this off of volume 9, but think about it… without getting to much into 4’s plot … it would kinda imply kyon sliding… and I read the interview
“And you said he is an ordinary boy, but I think, in a sense, he is not an ordinary boy, such as his way of thinking.”
actually, naw, I kid. the next question after that clearly explains what he said… but I just like the quote

  8. Yuki Nagato says:

Where do you dl the 9th?

  9. Yumeka says:

You can read all the novels including vol. 9 here.

  10. Jon says:

Honestly, I don’t see Kyon as the slider. It would kind of destroy the purpose of throwing a normal person into the crazy scenario and seeing how he would react if it turned out he too wasn’t a normal human. However, its fully possible that he is, seeing as how so far, in all nine novels, not once has ANYONE who knows the truth about Nagato Koizumi, Asahina and the others told Kyon that he was a normal person.
