Game review: Pokemon Diamond & Pearl(US version)

I wrote a review of the Japanese version of D&P back in October though I hadn’t covered many of the new features. But now that I’ve been playing the US version and have gotten a lot further in the game, I figured now’s a good time to complete my review of these incredible new games ^.^ I’ve already discussed the games’ graphics, storyline, and some new features in my Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (J. version) review so I’m not gonna go over those things again in this review. Instead I’m gonna talk about some of the new features I haven’t yet mentioned, mostly about the games’ online Wi-fi capabilities ^^

Online Battles and Trades

First off, one of the most amazing features of D&P is the ability to battle and trade with people online! In the old days you could only do these things using the Game Boy link cable, so you’d always have to be in the same room with the person you were battling or trading with. But not anymore in D&P! Each player is given a unique friend code which you need to exchange with others in order to connect with them online (this way you’ll only battle and trade with people you choose and not just anyone). Once you’ve got each other’s friend codes recorded in your Pal Pad, and as long as both of you have access to a Nintendo Wi-fi connector, wireless router, or other wireless connection, just go downstairs in any Pokemon Center, talk to the admin who’ll connect you to the Wi-fi, and you’re all set. You can choose to battle or trade, and then you’ll see a list everyone on your Pal Pad who’s currently online at the same time you are. So now you no longer have to make a specific date for you and your friend to meet up somewhere in order to battle and trade – all you gotta do is pick a convenient time to go online together, then you can battle and trade without ever having to see each other ^^

Another awesome new feature of the online trades and battles is the Voice Chat. Using the DS’s internal microphone, you can talk to the person you’re battling or trading with. The audio quality isn’t all that great, but hey, it’s pretty cool having a telephone-like feature on your DS ^^ Of course, you can also choose to turn the Voice Chat off.

As far as the actual trading and battling goes, trading is pretty much the same as in the old games. Pokemon are traded one at a time, and items can also be traded as long as they’re attached to the pokemon. The flow of the online trades compared to the old link cable trades is pretty much the same, though the online trades might go a bit faster. Battling on the other hand, is vastly different. Though the actual battling system is the same, the one outstanding feature in D&P online battles is the ability to have not only standard free battles, but also LV50 and LV100 battles, in which any pokemon you use will automatically be put at that level. Ever wanted to use a LV50 and a LV75 pokemon on the same team, but couldn’t because of their level difference? That’s a worry of the past in D&P! You can use pokemon of varying levels on your team, then when you choose a LV50 or LV100 battle, they’ll be placed at that level during the battle and their stats will be adjusted accordingly. So now you can focus more on devising a strategy and giving your pokemon good attacks without having to worry about getting them even in their levels.

Pal Park

Pal Park is another great feature in which you can transfer any pokemon from your GBA games (or the GameCube games, if you first put them in the GBA games) into your D&P game. I remember I was pretty mad at the transition from the GameBoy Color games to the GameBoy Advance games because there was no way to transfer pokemon between them. So I was no longer able to use the fifty+ LV100 and other strong pokemon I had in my Crystal version. But thankfully Nintendo took notice of this dilemma and corrected it for D&P using the new Pal Park feature.

In order to access Pal Park, you have to first beat the Elite Four and receive the National-Dex. Then head on over to the end of Route 221 and you’ll find Pal Park. But before you can actually get the GBA pokemon into your D&P game, you need to put a Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green, or Emerald pack into the DS GameBoy slot. Then when you get to the load game screen, a new option will come up for you to “migrate” pokemon from the GBA game into D&P. You have to transfer six pokemon at a time (no more or less), so as long as you have at least seven pokemon in the GBA game (one in your party and the rest in boxes), you’ll be able to do it. But just a few things to note about transferring:

  • You can only transfer pokemon from your PC boxes in the GBA game, not from your party. So make sure the pokemon you want to transfer are in the PC before you migrate them.
  • You won’t be allowed to transfer pokemon that know an HM move (it’s because some of the HMs are different in D&P). So take them to the move deleter first before you transfer them. Chances are you can just reteach them the HM move once they’re safely in your D&P game.
  • Everything about pokemon that are transferred will be the same; they’ll have the same stats, level, held item, attacks, etc,.
  • You can only do one transfer per game pack per day.
  • And lastly, the most important feature to note, pokemon cannot be returned to the GBA games after they’re transferred to D&P.

Once you’ve got your six pokemon transferred, head into the Pal Park building, talk to the owner, and you’re ready to start. You’ll be given six Park Balls and taken to a medium-size outside area with a few patches of grass and water. Your goal is to find the six transferred pokemon either in the grass or water (make sure you’ve got Surf with you). Once you find them, just throw a Park Ball and they’ll automatically be caught. Once you’ve caught all six, you can put them in your PC boxes and you’ll be scored on how well your catching performance was. Depending on your score, you’ll receive a berry as a prize. And now you’ll be able to use those six pokemon in D&P ^^

As far as I can see, the future of Pokemon lies in D&P, Battle Revolution, and the games to follow, so that’s a pretty good reason to transfer all your strong, high level, battling pokemon from your GBA games into D&P (and of course you’ll need transfers to help complete your Poke-Dex). Another thing to note is that a lot of the old pokemon from past generations learn new level-up attacks in D&P. Not only that, the fact that attacks are classified differently in D&P can make pokemon that were once poor in battle because of Attack and Special Attack stats conflicting with their type, much more powerful. I’ve already done a lot of Pal Park transfers, and from what I’ve seen, I think the pokemon I’ve transferred have learned better attacks and have become more powerful in battle than they were before! ^^

The Battle Tower

The Battle Tower is accessible once you beat the Elite Four and obtain the National-Dex. Though it’s not as complex as the Battle Frontier in Emerald, the Battle Tower in D&P is a great place to have challenging battles and to earn battle points, which you can use to buy lots of goodies like TMs and held items. There are three different things you can do in the Battle Tower. You can have a multi-battle in which you and a friend team up wirelessly and battle opponents together as a team. You can also team up with a computer controlled trainer if you don’t have any connected friends. Then there’s the usual single or double battle challenge where you have to beat seven trainers in a row before you can earn your battle points (most legendary and event pokemon are not allowed to enter though). With each seven consecutive wins, the trainers get increasingly harder. Also in the single battle challenge, you can battle the Tower Tycoon after your 21st and 49th consecutive wins. And like the online battles, you no longer have to worry about level restrictions – all battles in the Battle Tower are at LV50, so any pokemon you use will automatically be put at that level.

The last battle option is unique to D&P because you need the Wi-fi connection in order to play it. What you do is upload your current team and then download other players’ teams to battle. The teams you battle are actual teams that real players have used at one time, but they’re controlled by the computer in this case. When you score seven consecutive wins, you go up in rank and can choose to upload your team to the battle room you’re currently in so that other trainers can battle your team. You can also download lists of all the top trainers in each battle room.

Japanese vs English Translations

As usual, in the US version of D&P, the names of all the people, places, and most of the pokemon are changed. To me, it’s not really that big a deal. Rather than having all the characters given Japanese names like in the Japanese version, the English version gives them all English names…it’s understandable and it doesn’t alter the actual gameplay experience at all. And pretty much everything about the story and every line of text is translated faithfully so you’re not missing out on anything by playing the US version. The names of all the items, abilities, and attacks are translated exactly with few exceptions. A lot of the pokemon keep their Japanese names (like Pachirisu, Gabite, Luxio), names that are similar to the Japanese names (like Empoleon from Emperuto, Leafeon from Leafia), and some are changed, but they still retain the technique of blending words to make the names (like Turtwig from “turtle” and “twig). There are a few English names I’m not happy with, like Stunky and Purugly (kind of insulting to the pokemon, huh? ~_^) but most of them are fine.

One thing I noticed about the US version of D&P compared to the other US versions of Pokemon games is the capitalization of certain words. In all the games that came before, certain important words, such as the names of all the pokemon, trainers, items, attacks, etc., always appeared in all capital letters. So a typical battle phrase would appear as “CHARIZARD used FLAMETHROWER”. However in D&P, only the names of the pokemon are capitalized and all other words are written regularly (so in D&P, the above phrase is just “CHARIZARD used Flamethrower”.) Not sure why they decided to do this…it took a while for me to get used to it after years of seeing the text written the old way, but it’s no big deal.

Believe it or not, there are still some things in D&P I haven’t had a chance to try out yet, like the contests (I was never interested in the contests though…I’d rather battle ^^), the Global Trading System(GTS), or the Sinnoh Underground. But I’m sure these things will also amaze me. Pokemon Diamond & Pearl are two of the most revolutionary games to come out in a long time. From what I’ve heard, they’ve revived the Pokemon franchise – even people who have long since lost interest or never even played Pokemon before have found these games totally addicting. And in spite of what most people still believe, Pokemon games are not “kiddie” games. You could argue that the Pokemon anime is, but anyone who’s played the games knows that they require not only decent reading ability, but a whole lot of skill, strategy, planning, experience, and problem solving in order to do well in them. Sure, little 7-year-olds can push the buttons and get a thrill seeing the pokemon appear on the screen, but there’s no doubt that the most skilled people at the game are at least 12 years old. I think you can compare Pokemon to other popular “franchises” if you will, like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Spider Man, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc,. On the surface, these things are marketed for children, but any open-minded person knows that they have a major adult fan following, and the most passionate and dedicated fans are almost always adults because they can fully understand the complexity of these things and not just the wish-fulfilling aspect that draws children to them. Pokemon is the same – little kids can enjoy it, but it takes a more mature mind to plan and contemplate all the details in the game. Pokemon has elements that can appeal to people of any age, and D&P take this appeal to a whole new level! ^_^

By the way, one little side note, I’m planning to make another D&P related post in which I’ll exchange friend codes with anyone who wants to battle or trade with me. I’m even planning to make a list of all the strong/rare pokemon I’m willing to trade. I’m not ready now though, so don’t ask me for my friend code or anything yet, but I’m working on it. Check back soon =)

I was kinda disappointed by it. Seeing how they had so many years to make these 2 games and how they’re on the NDS, I expected them to have better battle graphics like actually have the pokemon move when attacking or blink, or maybe flinch when getting hit. Small things like that would’ve improved it by a lot. But instead, the battle animations are just like back then where a “Tackle” is having the pic move left then right… and a lil animation in the beginning of each fight. I would rather have better battle animations than “seeing your footprints in sand/snow”…

  2. Sol says:

I’m really hooked on this game, and I’m happy to hear that so many people have been buying this game. A majority of my friends bought the game, and are addicted to it, so I agree that many old fans still play pokemon. Its gone above and beyond any of the previous games.

  3. Rishi-kun says:

Yeah, I love the games too. ^^ I’ve been able to get WiFi acess from my neighbors, so I have a bunch of Japanesse Pokemon (Along with a Californian and English Pokemon too!) I’ve also been able to get all the Eevees I worked so hard to train into my Pearl, so I’ve been super-excited and happy! ^^

  17. PokemonAnswers says:

This game has been probaby the best of the pokemon games. Even though this is my first pokemon game, I love it. I played pokemon emerald before and it wasn’t that good. I can tell the diference between them. In emerald, pretty much all of the grafics are in 2D and now in diamond some of the grafics are in 3D. I am up to the 7th Gym Leader, and I was wondering if any of you know how to get to the Gym Leader through all the ice. It is hard. My pokemon are pretty good my best pokemon is EPOLEON which has Level 46. My back up pokemon is LUXRAY with level 40. By the way, the 7th Gym Leader is located in Snowpoint City. Make sure you have lots of Super and Hyper Potions to help you beat trainers on you way there. TIP: There is alot of snow. It will take a little bit to get there because of the snow that keeps burying you. After you beat the 7th Gym Leader (I am pretty sure) you go to Acuity Lakefront and beat Team Galactic. I would give this game a 4 and one half rating. I’ll write more once I beat the 7th Gym Leader and see what happens next.

You have to get the National Pokedex first

    To Ayesha-san–

    To Quinc-san–

    I don’t really know. -_-‘ I can’t remember….Rishi is sorry

  24. Oh! Wait, Quinc-san…Now I remember. Did you go to Veilstone and beat the boss of Galactic? If you didn’t, go do it. If you did…..Then Rishi has failed….

  26. Denise says:

Does anyone know what happens after you beat the battle tower? Is there anymore to the story? I’ve finished the pokedex i just want to know if theres more to do on pearl, but if not i might not even bother.

  27. To Jacob-san–

To get the pokemon from your old games, you have to put the old GBA game in the slot on the DS. Turn your DS on and go to the Pokemon opening title. It should say ‘Migrate from so-and-so.’ Then go south of Sandgem town, and follow the little water path thing. If you’ve seen every Pokemon in Sinnoh, the guards there won’t be there anymore. Go inside and talk to the guy at the counter. He should let you go catch pokemon.

    To Denise-san–

Not sure. Rishi is laaaazy. :)

Ares-san–1) You need 29 unknown to finish his job–that’s all of them, including ! and ?….2) It’s good that you know. 3) There hasn’t been any special events as of now. Check the pokemon website for when they are.

To David-san–I think you need to complete your Pokedex. They just went away for me without me paying aaaany attention. ^_~

Ok, I beat the first gym leader and get rock smash and teach it to my geodude. So I am traveling farther and farther until I get to Floaroma Town. So, this girls askes me, ” Can you get my dad?” and I’m all like,” Sure I’ll help you.” So I go over to Valley Windworks only to find that I had to battle a galactic guy. I win and he locks himself in the building. I cross the bridge and Team Galactic is there and they say that their doing something to Eterna Forest and that it’s none of my concern. I want to battle them to get to Eterna forest and get to Eterna City and FINALLY get my bicycle, but they won’t and I’m stuck. HELP!!!!!!

  57. lopina says:

  60. Emly says:

    I saw some people asking.
First you DON’T need event only pokemon to complete your dex in diamond and pearl.
You only need up to 150, which only includes the legendaries Azelf, Uxie, Mesprit and Palkia/ Dialga. Then you can get the nat’l dex.

Secondly, I wouldn’t wait for pokemon events to get event only pokemon. They don’t advertize them very well and they’re easy to miss. Also they don’t reach small towns, whereas places like Toys R Us are in towns all over. I go to smaller events. Such as Toy R Us giving away Darkrai about a week or so ago. Also Gamestop is giving away Deoxys in a week. You can find these out by frequenting pokemon sites and forums. Such as serebii.net (where I go).

  61. Emly says:

You have to fight the guy at Valley Windworks for one key and the guys in the flower field by the guy that gives you honey for the second key. You use them to get into Valley Windworks. The guy who sells honey is the girls dad you rescued and hes in the place above Floaroma. You walk through the little path same as when youre entering one of the lakes etc.. I did this months ago. So if youre stuck some p[ace along the way sorry. :/

  62. Emly says:

In diamond all you have to do is complete your dex, you don’t HAVE to beat the elite four. But in reality you do, because they have pokemon that you can only find in the game by fighting them. So in order to see all the pokemon you have to beat the elite four. BUT if you have wifi you could trade for those pokemon and get the nat’l dex without having to beat the elite four.

  63. Emly says:

Sunyshore had a blackout and you can’t get through, in order to make the guy move you have to complete the whole Dialga/Palkia plot. Going to all the lakes.. finding the pokemon gone.. saving them.. find dialga/palkia etc.

    Okay, D: ..
    I’m completely stuck |:
On pokemon diamond , in Mt Coronet, the galatic grunt says “I’m hopelessly lost! Please don’t pay attention to a lowly grunt without any Pokemon!”
How do you get passed him to get to the top of the mountain?!

    HELP!, please? D:

Shayna that’s the wrong way. You need to go out in the snow and go to the left. Look out for a different cave entrance. Trust me I thought that was the right way too but it’s not. It’s pretty hard to see the cave entrances in the snow but just keep a look out.
