Naruto the Abridged Series, and other anime vs YouTube stuff

A while ago I wrote a post about Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series, which I still think has got to be the best anime amv/parody/spoof/fandub series there is. Whether you like it or hate it, as long as you’re a little familiar with Yu-Gi-Oh!, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t find LittleKuriboh’s series hilarious! XD But now I’d like to talk about a new abridged series I’ve started watching – yup, Naruto the Abridged Series. Though I still think YGO the Abridged Series is a bit more clever, this one is definitely worth checking out for fans (and anti-fans) alike.

Unlike YGO: TAS, in which all the characters’ voices are amazingly done by one guy, LittleKuriboh, Naruto: TAS has two creators and voice talents, MasakoX and vegeta3986. So far, Naruto: TAS has 10 episodes completed – they just finished the Zabuza/Haku arc (skipping a lot of the filler stuff of course) and are ready to move on to the Chuunin Exams. So anyway, here’s a link to the first ep of Naruto the Abridged series.

The first few episodes are a little funny, but the later ones get even more so as you get used to the voices and all the ongoing gags they use ^.^ BTW, fans of YGO the Abridged Series should know that after a long recession, LittleKuriboh has finally posted episodes 17 through 19…and I have to say, they are excellent! XD These episodes also conclude the Duelist Kingdom arc.

Another good fan-made series to check out is Rubix89’s AMV Comedians videos. They’re different than the Abridged Series’ though. What he does is take scenes from anime (pretty much all Naruto) and matches them up to the audio of stand-up comedians such as Dave Chappelle and Dane Cook. They’re a bit less original, and whether you like them or not depends more on whether you like the comedians’ humor than whether you like Naruto, but they’re still good AMVs worth checking out.

Unfortunately, YouTube has been messing with both the Naruto and YGO Abridged Series’. After having some of their videos deleted, the creators of both series’ have decided to move their videos to DailyMotion and other similar sites. I already made my thoughts heard in my “YouTube, fansubs, and other copyright infringements” rant a while ago, but it still bugs me that these brilliantly hilarious videos have to be deleted when so many millions of inferior anime videos are left alone. I don’t see how VIZ, 4Kids’ or whoever could be losing money because of these videos. Thousands of people love them, they’re giving the series’ exposure, and they’re not hurting anything, so what’s the big deal? Ah well…guess there’s nothing we can do. Good thing sites like DailyMotion exits =)

Another thing that ticks me off is the amount of jerks on YouTube who have nothing better to do but leave trails of spam comments and obnoxious flames on people’s channels. LittleKuriboh has been having major problems with these kinds of people – not only do they fill up his comment section with obscene messages, but there’s a certain few “imposters”, like littlekuriboh, who even continually flag his YGO: TAS videos so they’ll be taken down. Though most of the comments he gets are compliments, most of the time it becomes a war-zone between them and the jerks I mentioned above, all trying to tell each other to f**k off and get a life, etc,. If anything, YouTube should spend more time deleting the accounts of morons like them instead of people who upload harmless anime clips, but I guess that would require more of an effort than they want to give ~_~ It’s a shame really, but when you’re as popular as LittleKuriboh’s channel is (over 30,000 subscribers!) and you’re on a big, public site like YouTube, you’re bound to attract some unwanted attention. Just take a glance at his over 8,000 comments to see what I mean. Pretty ridiculous, but that’s stupidity and jealousy for you XP

Well anyway, just wanted to recommend the Abridged Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh! Series’ to any anime fan who likes funny anime parody videos! ^.^ Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

    aaa, I love Naruto Abridged~ :33
I agree, its not as clever as YGO Abridged, but still..its hilarious. XD
    I love the on-going jokes…and Naruto’s my favourite anime. ^^

I’ve never actually seen any YGO, except for maybe a few dub episodes, but still YGO: Abridged is the best anime parody I’ve ever seen! XD I love it.

I’ve never watched the entire YGO series so I think a lot of the humor would be lost, but thanks for this recommendation I’ve watched the first three EPs and have done nothing but laugh.

While I have not seen either YGO:TAS nor Naruto:TAS (I’ve only read this post and the YGO:TAS post), the creators should tell YouTube to shove it. Furthermore, their videos are parodies, and while I don’t have any clue about international copyright law, under US copyright law, parodies are legal under the fair use exception (17 USC 107)–see the 1976 Copyright Act (US). See also Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. (510 US 569 (1994)), where a parody of Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” was made by 2 Live Crew and the case brought before the US Supreme Court. In other words, parodies of copyrighted materials are allowed under the fair use exception–and sometimes they may even be commercially marketed! [If YouTube doesn’t get this, they should find themselves some new legal counsel. Hey… I’m looking for a job! :p]

Unfortunately, that still wouldn’t cover fansubs. Much as I like fansubs, those are derivative works without a fair use exception. (Besides which, the fair use exception has various factors which weigh into whether the work qualifies for the exception, such as commercial or educational use, the nature of the works, amount of the original work used, and whether or not the parody detracts substantially from the original’s marketability.)

Personally, I find that the US copyright holders of anime/manga works tend to overreact. Yes, they do technically ‘own’ the rights to any segment of their shows being shown in the US, every clip, every picture, and those rights aren’t exactly cheap. But a clip (such as an opening or ending sequence) isn’t really going to hurt their business. In fact, if they’re really worried, they should distribute specific clips themselves as a good marketing ploy. But… they’re probably just going for a blanket cover of all the ‘stuff’ they ‘own’–with a sense of ‘it’s mine and no one should have but me and the people who bought it from me!’. Greedy, egotistical people. I’d probably buy more if they didn’t generate this negative sense of selfishness against them. And if I was made of cash… :(

PS: Sorry–I’m probably adding to this thread a little late, but well… I just found AnimeYume.com :)

I’m a big fan of YGO Abridged, and a new fan of Naruto Abridged. Naruto Abridged sort of got LittleKuriboh’s blessing in the first episode. That’s why I started watching it. Now I can see why he did it. The other are just imposters in my opinion. Really, really bad imposters.
