Nintendo Wii: the revolutionary game system

I actually got my Wii a while ago, I just now finally decided to post about it. Yup, I was one of the lucky ones who didn’t have to wait on a long line in order to get one…I managed to get the last Wii at a local Game Stop. I wasn’t in the store five minutes before two other people came in and asked for one, so I was definitely in the right place at the right time! And since I had a couple of gift cards, I also got to knock $75 off the price too! Like all Nintendo products, it was fairly easy to assemble and figure out once I got it home. Unfortunately I haven’t had as much time as I would like to play it yet, but I have to say, it’s got to be the best video game system I’ve ever experienced…

I know a lot of anime fans are also fans of video games, and although I enjoy video games, I’m not one of the big-time gamers. I used to be one back in the old days of Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear. I loved those systems to death and had tons of games for them(I especially loved Sonic games). But after I started to get into anime, plus my life becoming more busy with school and other things, my time for video games dwindled. I’ve always been a huge fan of Pokemon games, so those are really the only games I’m continually into. Half the reason I bought an N64, Game Boy AdvanceSP, and Nintendo DS was to play the Pokemon games for those systems ^^,,, And although the game I’m most desperately waiting for, the US version of Pokemon Battle Revolution, won’t come out for at least another 6 months, I just had to get my hands on a Wii now because it’s such an absolutely amazing system =P

Of course, the wireless game play is astounding. Less emphasis on button pressing and more emphasis on the actual movement of your hand is a bit challenging at first, but tons of fun once you get the hang of it. And the Wii’s other amazing feature…Internet connection of course. I thought the Wi-Fi connection with the Nintendo DS was awesome, but being able to actually surf the net, update your system, check the weather, etc., is something else! As for what I think of the Wii channels specifically:

Mii channel: Creating your own custom Mii is great. I actually got mine to look somewhat like me ^^ I don’t have any games besides Wii Sports where you get to use your Mii (are there others?), and I haven’t gotten into transferring them yet, but still, the Mii channel is a fun feature =)

Photo channel: This channel lets you put photos from a digital camera memory card onto your Wii, and do simple edits on the photos as well. There isn’t too much advantage in doing this on the Wii as opposed to a computer, but it’s still a pretty cool feature ^^

Shop channel: For a fan of old Sega Genesis and N64 games like me, the Shop channel is great! ^.^ With your Internet connection, just punch in your credit card number, buy Wii points, then download any old classic game you like and keep it on your Wii. Most of the games are around 500 to 800 points, which roughly comes out to about $5 to $8…not a bad price at all! The only game I’ve downloaded so far is the old Ecco game on Genesis…I used to love that game back in the day. I hope they get more of my old favorites available for Genesis (and is there really only one N64 game available so far?)

Forecast channel: Being able to check the weather from many different countries all over the world on your video game system? Totally revolutionary! And leave it to Nintendo to come up with the cool globe-rolling way of moving around to the different continents. I never really cared much for checking the weather, but now I do ^^

News channel: The newest feature, which actually wasn’t there when I first got the Wii, but became available for download a little while ago. It was so cool downloading the News channel update for my Wii just like I do updates on my computer ^_^ If you can check the weather on your Wii, why not go a step further and read the latest news headlines? This channel takes a bit longer to load, but it’s worth the wait. It doesn’t have a ton of news stories, but enough, grouped into different categories, to give you a good idea of what’s going on in the world, plus the ability to enlarge any images in the articles, and even do a slide show of them.

Internet channel: I never thought I’d be able to surf the web with a video game system and view web pages on my TV (not so soon anyway =P) But, if you’ve got a Wi-Fi connector or other wireless Internet connection in your house, the Wii gives you this amazing ability! Nintendo hasn’t yet perfected the technology however; you can really only view pictures and text…you can’t download any files such as music or videos with the Wii Internet (I can’t get YouTube videos to play properly either). But hey, who knows what a few more years of technological advancement will bring?

Wii Sports: Not a channel, but a game that comes with the Wii console. This game takes full advantage of the system’s wireless connection, letting you use the Wii remote as a tennis racket, baseball bat, golf club, bowling ball, and boxing gloves all in one ^.^ After playing Wii Sports for just 20 minutes, I feel like I was actually getting exercise (boxing especially makes me work up a sweat ^^,,,) This game should go down in history as the first real video game which requires you to stand up and use your upper body power to play rather than button pressing. Not only is this game a ton of fun (I couldn’t care less for real sports, but I love Wii Sports =P), but it definitely gives new meaning to the phrase “getting into the game.”

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time or money to get any more Wii games besides Wii Sports (I still have my old GameCube games though). There actually aren’t any games out right now that I really want. I’ll definitely buy the Smash Bros. Wii game when it comes out, and the first Sonic Wii game too (and of course, Battle Revolution when it comes out). As I said before, I love video games, but I’m not a major gamer. I wish I did, but I just don’t have the time (or money) in my life for both anime and video games…so if it’s a choice between the two, I’ll have to pick anime ^.^ But, since Nintendo never ceases to amaze me with their line of video game systems like the Wii (and DS too), I’ll always find time for at least a little gaming ^_^

Soon, Wii would make it so you never have to leave the house :3

I bought a wii a while back and I have come to the conclusion that the controller system is really somthing, although you have a bit of a movement lag. These baby’s are really sensitive! Much more than you would expect.
But ya know, thats about it. Nothing more than a gamecube at it’s best for graphics, and there are really no great games out yet. Zelda was good, but it was short for a hardcore fan. I look forward to the new super smash bros., but the Wii is all flashyness and not alot of torque behind it’s processing.
